View Full Version : PS3 launching with a motion sensing controller is good for Nintendo

Sure, you could see it as ripping off the Wii-mote, but I say it's good for Nintendo.

Reason is because developers can make games tailored for the Wii controller that can be (easily?) ported to the PS3 (or vice versa) due to it's controller. So even if the PS3 dominates the market, publishers can tap both markets which will hopefully lead to more 3rd parties willing to make games that truly use the technology and not just a port of a standard game that throws in some motion sensing mini-games or something.

And since the Wii has been designed from the ground up with this controller in mind and the PS3 hasn't, you have to think the Wii-mote is going to be superior in the motion sensing arena. So the definitive version of any game using that interface will probably be the Wii.

Am I off base here?

Actually from what I've read the PS3 controller definitely won't have anything near the range of movement of the Wii-mote. I just hope that doesn't mean there will be a slew of PS3/Wii games that use motion sensing for the interface but only in ways that work for the PS3...

I think you are forgetting how much more powerful the PS3 is, so that's going to be a big issue when companies try to port games across platforms this time around.

Good point. I suppose it could translate into some crappy games that combine Wii level graphics with PS3 level motion sensing support. Sweet!

I do not think that many Rev games will be ported to the PS3. Even though motion sensing is present on both systems on the Rev it is a much more intergral part of the game. On the PS3 it is just an added extra, playing a Rev game on it would be very awkward.

I don't think this will be the case. From what I hear, the PS3's motion sensing technology is quite a bit different than the Wii's. I think the PS3's controller doesn't actually sense motion, but in fact, just senses tilts.

Sony called it motion sensing but it can only detect 6 certain motions... but I'm not sure if it is indeed just a tilt sensor or it actually senses motion (like the Wiimote). Miyamoto said that the motion sensing technology is similar to what Nintendo was doing on the GBC which leads me to believe it is indeed just a tilt sensor.

The Wii's controller is a huge a part of the Wii -- the PS3's controller isn't a huge part of the PS3.

Developers probably won't be clinging to the PS3's rendition of the motion-sensing technology, as that isn't the consoles main focus.

I really don't see it as helping Nintendo at all. Sony is basically taking away the gimick of controlling games in a new way so that Uninformed Gamer, when presented with the choice of a PS3 and a Wii, will think that the PS3 has the same controller capabilities as the Wii and will instead go for the PS3.

Had Sony never introduced their 6 degree sensing controller, Nintendo would have an easier time distinguishing themselves from the competition. Now, they have to work extra hard to show consumers that 1) they have a new way of playing games and 2) it's a LOT better than PS3.

Hmmmm, you have a point, but the style of handling the controller is completely different, a few games could possibly utilize it, but i'm thinking games like red steel would be awkard to play.

But, they could have the capacity to make Red Steel look 10x better on the ps3, my guess is they'll keep it a WII title
