End of support for Windows 98 and Windows Me
July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date.
Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web site (http://support.microsoft.com/gp/hublist). This Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service.
Microsoft is retiring support for these products because they are outdated and can expose customers to security risks. We recommend that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.mspx), as soon as possible.
Customers who upgrade to Windows XP report improved security, richer functionality, and increased productivity.

Please tell me you're using 98 or 98 2nd Edition, and not Me. Me should have lost support the year it was released when everyone found out it ran like a piece of shit.

Thank god. Now people will be forced to use a better OS. These should have been in the grave long ago.

As long as you've got an OS CD and dont require anything too fancy, that should be fine for a very long time.
Hell, pretty soon all the viruses are going to be targeting Vista, maybe in the not too distant future, you wont NEED security updates.
Since I dont PC game much anymore, anytime I need to reinstall an OS, I'm going right to my 2000 cd, and will probably do so for at least a little while after 2000 support stops until the application support vanishes entirely. Then again I'm using as much open source software as possible, so I should be fine.

I may finally have to upgrade to a newer version of Windows. I'll still hold out for as long as possible.

although I praised ME came out as a stable version of 98, I cursed it soon after when I encountered more BOS!!!!!!!!!! ME is defently the bane of microsoft. funny how they focused and release XP about a year later :|

I am sick of ME hate! The only reason I upgraded to XP this year is because new hardware no longer suports ME. Sure ME had a few stability flaws but not so does XP. At least ME drivers worked all the time unlike my XP drivers that are unstable and reset my PC every couple of days (and yes my PC is malware free.)

also a bit of a warning to those using Virtual PC for there systems... MS will NOT give you support to install 98, 95, ME under Virtual PC. Dispite the fact that you need help installing that stuff under there supported Virtual PC, they will refuse to help you set it up unless you bitch at them about it. The stuff they instructed me to do in order to install 98 was not in the Virtual PC manual. Seems a lot of un nessasary steps are required to get things working under virtual pc. just a heads up for those who are planning to use virtual pc with older os's.

That's pretty much the opposite experience I've had with ME, but I would have to reset everyday.

They had to do SOMETHING to keep people from bitching about reinstalling until the real OS (2000) came out ;)

I love XP. Sucks that it's hard to make old games work on it sometimes, but jesus, LAN gaming so fucking easier.

This is a good thing. Legacy shit is at least 30% of Windows stability problems.

Thats one of the reasons Macs have the stability edge. When they came out with OS9 they said 'Fuck this, we're starting over'. OS9 only supported OS8 and lower apps through emulation of OS8. The code for them wasn't actually part of OS9. Much like the Command window with XP. XP isn't actually just a shell over DOS like 95 and 98 were. However, the few remaining issues can be traced back to legacy support.

I am still running a Windows 98 machine right now. I would run out and get a new computer but I am very interested in MS Vista which is coming out next January. I really want to jump on the 64 bit generation. Kinda sucks to wait so long though....

there are still a couple of games that I would like to keep playing since they were really good back in the day, getting them to work under XP can be a bitch since they aren't supported by the makers anymore.

I still have a 98 machine. It doesn't really bother me too much since I only use my computer for message boards, gaming news and instant messengers. I don't PC game at all, or do anything more complicated than word processing. So it's kind of pointless for me to upgrade.

I just got XP but 98SE was fine for me for quite a long time. I just needed software support for my new MP3 player.
