It had to happen. After all this time of defending Sony and saying my console has never given me any serious lip...

I was running Silent Hill on it a few weeks ago no problem. However, I went to start Growlanser 2 and the drive started sounding like it was having a seizure. It would spin up, there'd be a sound of plastic slipping and itd rev up and slip and repeat. I Cleaned the lense and tried again to no avail. Then I threw in my import loader CD and that booted right up. So then I just loaded the game that way. After the game loaded, I didn't have an issue. It worked 3-4 times no problem. Until the last time. I was playing for a few hours and went to load a save and the drive started skipping again. I went to reload it with the other CD. The PlayStation 2 logo came up and then nothing. It just sat there black. I tried Silent Hill and it skipped again. I went to other CD PS2 games and those skipped, I went to audio CDs and those skipped. I went to a blank DVD and it went to the red screen saying insert the right disk dumbass. It loaded up a DVD game instantly.

Anyone else have this issue? The boot CD loads without the slipping/rev-up issue, but every other CD I put in there spins the drive and then makes a grinding sound.

It sounds like the disks aren't being held to the spindle tight enough, but then that'd probably affect DVDs too...

Anyone else have this issue at any point?

Have you tried the tape method? What you're describing sounds like it should do the trick.

if want to clean the laser, its very simple. I used compressed air and alcohol... neither works.

I don't know of a specific method, but I did try using tape. It seemed to throw it off balance and make it worse or not allow the spindel to come up far enough. Tell me more?

After dicking with it more, it seems like the laser assembly is rising up so far that its actually hitting the disk and throwing it into a wobble. So the drive slows down and the disk keeps spinning which makes the grind. Then it revs back up and hits the disk again... :wall::wall:

Oooo... you meant cleaning the laser with tape?

Apparently, I need to fuck with the laser voltage. Thats goign to be a bitch seeing how my case is sealed shut...

The tape method is putting two parallel pieces of about inch long tape around the hole in the disc like this: |O|

Yea... tried that, but I did it with 4. I'll try it again with 2.

Two on the top didn't work. So I put two on the bottom and it works... fucking ghetto.

Thanks Bignuts.

Sorry to say, but your ps2 is about to die. Time to dig a grave and get a new one.

You can open it up and adjust the laser, I was able to temporarily fix the DRE issues by doing that with mine. I actually got it to read everything but DVD movies for some reason.

I wouldn't be surprised, she is 5 years old, but she's a stubborn bitch and will no doubt last another 5. ;)

I know, but I have a custom acryllic case on mine where the screw holes have flush acryllic covers. Its nasty trying to get in there.

 I got the loader to play one game. I played it like once and then never used the game or loader again.

Stupid Raiden III!

How could they fuck it up? Its a simple premise. Get a cool fucking ship with lots of hot sekz weapons. They got rid of the purple people eater!

My PS2 doesn't read PS2 CD games at all, so yeah, it's a widespread problem. Not much you can do besides open it up, do the tape thing, and call sony.

at least a new one will only set you back $99 now. Im on my second, and I wouldnt be surprised if I have to buy a third one in a year or two.

$99? Isn't it $129? I have problems with my ps2 cd's as well. : ( What I do is flip over the system, start it and then the game loads. Once it works I flip back to the right position. Sega Superstars works fine now.
