Trade in a DRE PS2 at Ebgames?

Does anyone know if it's possible to trade in a PS2 that gets inconsistant DREs at Ebgames and, if so, about how much I'd get for it? It's just been sitting under my bed for a month or so (since I replaced it) and I was wondering if I could make some use of it.

Well, you can just trade it in and they will not even test it.

You know, you could have just fixed it. It's actually not that complicated to open it up blow out the dust and clean the laser. I do it on a routine basis now (mine as well as for others). It never ceases to amaze me how this country will simply go out and buy something new and shiny of whatever to replace something broken or old, rather than to simply repair it.

I didn't even do that. I called Sony for the free repair, mailed it off and let them do it.

Are they still doing that?

That's what I did too, it was quick, free, and painless. I think I sent mine in like 2-3 years ago though, dunno if they still do it.

Well, you can just trade it in and they will not even test it.

This is a YMMV. My EB Games tests every system that comes in before they issue credit.

I think that they take defective systems, but they offer less credit because you are essentially paying for the repair...that's what they did a couple of weeks ago to a kid who tried to trade a busted XBox.

or you can do like I did and find a FAQ on the internet and with a Butter Knife and ScrewDriver fix up the PS2 good as new

Yea, I know it's the store's responsibility to check it, but it's still kind of a dick thing to do to someone.

I've traded in 2 less than perfectly running PS2's to EB and GS respectively. The one I traded into EB was a 50001 model with a failing laser, which was cleaned at an indy shop just prior to me taking it there to swap for $100 in credit(with 2-3 games, old deal).

The other one, was a 30001R that I swapped away to GS. I kinda pitied those clerks who tested it, as I heard it scratching rings in their testing discs, but I didn't say a word.

I just grabbed my $60-65 in credit from them and split real quick. Thing is, I paid $30 for that one from an indy shop locally. So I essentially 'doubled' my money in a way.

I paid $100 a year earlier for the 50001 and played it ALOT in that year. So, I got more than my $$$$'s worth from it before I swapped it to them.

And I just traded in a 39001 about 2-3 months ago to EB, it was dead as a doornail. I took it apart down to base components and re assembled it like nothing. But, I still couldn't figure out how to fix the video problem it had.

So, off to EB it went. They took it in, no questions asked, just because I said it was 'dead' or broken.

So yeah Sephitor, you can just swap it into EB/GS and they SHOULD take it as is. But you'll only get maybe 25-30 in credit for it.

That'd be a great idea though, bring in an empty PS2 case with some weights in it and say it's defective for $30. Not that I think fraud is funny, I just like the idea of a guy in a repair place opening it up to find a stale donut and some rocks hot glued to the bottom.

Testing depends on the employee. Some don't care and some will take their time looking over the PS2 and checking discs.

If the PS2 works but it's missing the warranty sticker they'll give you the same credit as a broken one.

Most DRE's are easy to fix. Take it apart clean the insides test it. If it doesn't work you can adjust the voltage of the laser and that will usually fix the problem. I posted a message on gamespot's page, with links to a couple sites that have detailed pictures of the PS2's insides (page 5 or 6 in the official PS2 dre thread).
