My Windows box has alaways produced a lot of heat, but I was in a big room with two large windows, so that wasn't so much of a problem. Now that I've moved into a smaller room with two small windows I feel like this thing is making my blood boil. I have a Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz (Prescott Core) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116171) with a Thermatalke CL-P0086 Beetle (https://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=370498). I'm looking for something in the $100 range that will keep my room a little cooler. Noise isn't too much of a concern...but I don't want a jet engine. I have a (non-geeky) roomate to consider.

Any sugegstions beyond room fans? Because those aren't helping much. :bomb:

I am running a 2.8 Prescott at 3.1 and I use the Thermaltake Big Typhoon. It costs about $50 on Newegg. It is quite quiet, at least way quieter then the stock cooler. I get about 44C at load and about 36C idle.

Edit: oops did not read the OP properly. You could switch to an AMD, their processors run much cooler. Having your computer go into sleep mode automatically when it is idle would also help. If you want to cool a room on the cheap I suggest one of those box fans you can buy everywhere, you know, the kind shaped like a square and have a knob on them for speed settings. Those fans are quite powerful and can move plenty of air, put one up on your window and it will cool the room very nicely.

From what the OP said, I think he wants to cool his room. If he improves the cooling of his CPU, that heat will be transferred to the room making the room even warmer.

So, I am wrong in trying to search for a better cooler? That would only increase the heat in my room?

Yes, the computer is acting as a small heater and improving the cooling of the computer just transfers the heat better to your room.

So, if the room is small, a small window AC unit would cool the room and can be had for under $100. Also, since the room air would be cooler your computer would actually run a bit cooler as well.

Your computer components are going to produce heat no matter how good your cooling is. Your fans and heatsinks only determine where that heat goes. Better air-flow just means the heat from your PC is able to escape the case more easily, your room will get the same effect. Large server rooms have this problem.

The solution is to get the heat out of the room, or in the case of an AC unit, to create cool air. You want either a box fan infront your window or an AC unit.

If you open your windows and leave your door open, that should automatically create some airflow. Of course, if you live in an warm/humid area.. that's not a good thing.

I'd get some of those cheap square fans (2 at least) and have them blow air out of the room (leave your door open though. There have been guys here who put 4 of those together and have them blowing air out. But this doesn't work too well if air always comes in through your window.

Thanks for the tips guys. I guess I'll go with a small AC unit.

...That all makes sense. I dunno why I was being dumb and thinking that the heat could magically vanish in my case, haha.

id say go with this nice heatpipe cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835109118

and if you wanted to cool your room a bit pick up one of these at walmart...
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4756124

keeps the room cool and is more practical compared to the outrageous costs of window AC's
