View Full Version : game testing
has anyone ever heard of something called localgametester? I got an email from them saying they are looking for people in my state to test upcoming releases, but I smell a scam. Here is the link the sent me:
http://www.freewebs.com/localgametester
they also told me to run a google search under "video game tester".
Like I said, I smell a scam, but does anyone know of anything like this that might be legit? I could use another thing to do.

Even if true you probally dont want the job. People picture video game testing and think of sitting around playing a game having fun. The reality is that you have to play a specific part of a game in multiple ways making sure there are no bugs, since these games are in beta bugs do arise often. When you get a bug you have to then awnser or write tons and tons over and over about the problem, where it happaned, what could be the possible cause, what you had done just before hand etc etc.
Most people I know that have tested games either cannot play games at all for awhile or at the very least can never play the game they tested again.

It's bullshit...the grammar alone is a dead giveaway...along with the punctuation and spelling.
You'd think they'd at least run spellcheck before they run a scam, eh?

Smells like bullshit. My friend used to do game testing for Acclaim when he was still in high school and got paid a little above minimum wage, like most other people there, and put in a number of hours playing the same section of an upcoming game repeatedly.
Low pay, moderate stress, high levels of boredom. That and he had to think outside of the box a lot to find bugs. For example, what would happen if you try to use a particular special move to throw yourself outside of the map? What if you pause the game in the midst of a particular controller input? What would happen if you hit your enemy at the exact same time he hits you? It's almost insane.
Save your money. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Up to $80 an hour to test games and fill out simple surveys? Perhaps, maybe if the simple surveys were linked with getting paid minimum wage, but considering a number of developers seem to be using game testing to fix only a handful of bugs before meeting a deadline set by major publishers nowadays (ie: GET IT OUT OR ELSE!!!) it doesn't seem likely that a large portion of the budget would go towards game testing. Just my two cents, though.

If they were legit they would have a real website instead of a freewebs account
