View Full Version : I just bought a DS Lite from Target! Update!

Got mine last night at the Target on Howard in Evanston. I had a friend check the Glenview one in the Glen, but no luck. When I got to the Howard Target around 8, they had 4 on the shelf. I went and got an employee, and while I was waiting another person came to get one. He bought one, I bought two, and there was one kid waiting for his mom to get another one.
I was casually talking to the employee, and he sold the units to me, but then asked another employee (or his manager, not sure) about the fact that they were breaking the street date. I don't know if they pulled the units or not.
Anyway, I have one for sale if any Chicago folk are interested. :D

That's weird that you guys got that. I still got the "Order is ready for pickup" email. I could always try to pick it up. :cold:
If it were me, I'd limp in there and say, "You made me limp all the way in here with a sprained ankle and now you're not going to give me something I ALREADY PAID FOR?!" and generally raise Hell. But I didn't get that e-mail.

Madopal,
I'm in Chicago and I'm interested. Email me at:
wsjenkins AT rcn.com
ETA: The Target in Evanston on Howard is no longer selling the DS Lites. Tried this morning. In fact, all Targets I tried said no.
The Sears at four corners on Irving, big no too.

First post and all I have to say is thanks to you all, I'm now a proud owner of a DS Lite. I'd been thinking of picking up a DS here the past couple days, having no clue about the Lites as I'm not big on Nintendo products. I came across this thread while researching and got caught up in the hype.
Last night, went to the Walmart in Goergetown, KY. No DS Lites and the clerk, who was an older woman, had no clue what I was talking about.
Next stop was the Target in Lexington, KY as it was along the way home. I go in and they have 2 Lites in the case. I hit the call button for assisstance.
Target Employee: Can I help you?
Me: *Points in vague direction of the case* Yeah, I need to get a..
Target Employee: DS Lite?
Me: Yeah.. Guess people have been here asking already..
Target Employee: Yep, we had 15. People have been coming in all day.
He takes it out and rings it up for me. I then proceeded to Gamestop to pick up a couple used games for it. The employees were pissed I got one early as they had to wait 11 more days. I let them know there was one left, and they asked my to bring in mine so they could drool over it. *Chuckle* It was an eventful evening.

I just got off the phone with the Gamestop in my area. I asked him if they had any Ds Lites in and he pretty much yelled, "They don't come out till june 11th, JEEZ!!"
I guess they got word that everyone was selling them but them.

Just got a call from Sears.
"The DS Lite you ordered has been returned to the manufacturer. You can either call Sears.com and cancel the order, or come pick out a different one."
"I'll cancel. Thanks."
I got just about the same call, he asked if i wanted a "Blue one" instead (yea, they're being tricky, bait & switch). Of course i asked if it was the DS Lite or the original, to which he regrettingly replied the original. I told him i would cancel my order.
I'm kinda burned out on this, ill just wait and hope that Gamerush gets some in. Ive still got plenty of store credit, and ill have an additional $60 to tack on when i trade my original in.

Got my confirmation from Sears online. Went to East side Sears here in Columbus, Ohio.
Stock guy couldnt find them. Had the cashier check stock at the store. The sku brings up an error. Something about a hold on the items.
I had to get a refund.

Wow, I guess there aren't (m)any other Long Island CAG's looking for a DS Lite.. gonna hit the Target in the Broadway Mall in Hicksville and the one in Commack on the way home from work in about an hour, and the Sears in the Huntington Mall says they're in stock, so I will check there.
Stopping at the nearby Best Buy for something else, but I'll check and see if they have them anyway ;)
Don't expect to find anything, but wouldn't it be nice?

Last night I ordered via sears.com after my local Sears had closed. This morning I got an email stating that the order had been canceled. So I went back to sears.com, searched again, and found it at another local store. I placed a second order, and quicly received a "Ready for Pickup" email. When I arrived at the store, I was told that they had tried to contact me, as the item was marked as "do not sell" Two managers checked, and double checked, but they were not able to give me a DS Lite, because according to their system, the item as been recalled. I had to call the customer service number to have the order canceled, and the customer service rep also stated that these have been recalled. There is one more store in my area that is listed as having stock. I'm going to try to place an order from them w/ little hope that it will be filled.
EDIT: I'm in the Suburban Detroit Area. The 1st order was at Livonia Mall, it was canceled. The 2nd order was at Fairlane Mall, it was not honored, and has been canceled. The 3rd order is at Twelve Oaks Mall, and it is still processing.
UPDATE: Well, I just got a call from the Twelve Oaks Store, they're also claiming recall, and have cancelled the order.

Yeah, I checked out the Sears website last night and it only listed the Huntington Square Mall as In store (but not in-stock, later on last night it was listed as out of stock entirely), so I placed an order with the Sears at the South Shore Mall. Got my confirmation email this morning, no phone calls from them yet. I wish the Huntington Square Mall one had it in stock last night, as that is much closer to me.

I would have, but none at the Crossville SuperTarget. Didn't make it to Northpoint.
At least I found a cheap used copy of Midnight Club 3 @ BBuster. That made me happy.

Crap. Canton, GA Sears "Doesn't carry the Nintendo series" and the Town Center one only has the oldies in stock. Haven't tried Northpoint, because there's no way in hell I'm driving there. No one picked up at the Woodstock Target electronics deparment, but I'm going out in a bit anyway, so I'll stop by there and the Woodstock Wal-Mart.
Woodstock is about thirty-five to forty-five minutes away from Atlanta, but it's about to hit rush hour, so even a shiny new DS Lite probably isn't worth the trip.

Aye, I checked the same thing but the SS Mall is much too far from me to justify going over there on a whim, and I don't want to place an order online (need to pay for this puppy with cold hard cash :P).
I doubt anything will come of my search but if any store actually sells me one, I'll be sure to let you know.

The Sears stores in general seem to be shutting everyone out at this point. The website claims that Northpoint does not have them in stock, anyway, so I haven't bothered to visit the store in person. I'm currently about a mile from it.

Raven, where are you at, have you tried up at the State College store?
Well, that's it for me. Tried Sears, and got what everybody's getting - the manager knew nothing about the DS Lite, but the computer wouldn't let him sell one because it claims they're recalled. Actually a clever way to get your employees to not sell something without explaining why - if Walmart had done that I doubt so many DS Lite sales would've happened with employee overrides.
Speaking of Walmart, I went back there to do some legitimate shopping and decided to give one more try at finding a cooperative employee... they all know now, and have reverted to "lie and frighten" mode... the guy said he "didn't have any, and if I did I couldn't sell them. Any store that sells them is doing so illegally." He didn't want to talk to me any more after that - presumably for fear of bringing down the feds. If you get a DS Lite early, the terrorists win.
I know you have them, pal - the guy last night went into the stock room and told me they were sitting there, he just wouldn't override the thing and sell one. Sigh.
At any rate, looks like that's it for Central PA. KwanzaaTimmy, if I missed someplace and you miraculously find them, buy two and I'll take one off your hands. ;) Otherwise, we'll just have to wait and exchange friend codes on the 11th with everybody else.

I called customer support to cancel my order and the lady told me she just got off the phone with someone else doing the same thing from NY. So no go for me and looks like a no go for a lot of other people.

Yup. Could be a lot worse. I've still got my EB preorder, I didn't charge anything to my credit card finding out that the Sears deal doesn't work, and everybody who has gotten one seems to think they're freaking awesome, so that makes me look forward to it all the more.
And it's been a fun treasure hunt, even if an unsuccessful one.

Medina, Ohio:
Found a bunch of DS Lites at Walmart. An employee was offering advice to a mother about which DS to buy for her son. The employee indicated that the Lite would be a good choice.
I didn't try to buy one, so I don't know if there's a lockout at the register. There were about 6 visible, but probably more behind the ones I could see.

I tried a ton of Target and Wal-Marts in the Phoenix area yesterday and today. Even the Baseline and McClintock location that someone else got one at- no luck.
But... I *just* picked up mine at Sears. Ordered online this morning before they opened and got the pick up email just after they opened. Got in at 10:45 and picked it up- no problem.
Seems like all Phoenix area Sears have them in stock. I got mine in Chandler.

I just picked mine up at Sears, too. I ordered mine about an hour and a half ago and picked it up shortly thereafter. Joliet, IL. Most of the other local stores are sold out.
I drove to the Joliet store first thing this morning and they knew nothing about it, then I drove up to Aurora and the guy standing in front of me had ordered the last one. I drove home, ordered one from Joliet, and now it's in my hands. Glorious.

Also checked the Target in Commack, but it was just the typical big empty space. Best Buy in Commack didn't have them in yet, and I didn't bother checking the Huntington Mall Sears because of all the reports on this site.
But, if you want a DS Lite and are willing to trek to Hicksville (or live nearby) - go for it! They had a lot as of this afternoon, and there were no problems with buying it (aside from me shaking like a leaf while he rung up two people in front of me :P)

Called Sears, and they said their system showed it was actually picked up. I guess once you swipe your card at the store, it becomes the store's problem. Anyway, they said they would give me a credit on my account, but I'll be monitoring that like a hawk.

Just got shot down by Sears in Glendale, CA. I placed the order last night after the store had closed and received the "Ready for pick up" email promptly this morning. The sad part was that I got the dreaded phone call just as I was about to enter the store! I was given the same BS about it being defective and that the blue one was available instead.

Well this has officially been the craziest system launch in recent history! All these people buying multiples to resell are sadly finding that the people who will pay the premium already have.......when the Japanese launch came. I think it's funny even though I had purchased an extra to flip on Ebay. It closed for just over $23 profit and then I sold the system my buddy backed out on to another CAG for about $8 profit (tip).... I'm satisified because after that and selling my DS Fat I was able to upgrade for about $13 out of my pocket. :D
Good luck to those still looking! :)

I had success with sears.com on the second try.
The first DS Lite I ordered for in-store pickup got me the e-mail back that it was unavailable and that the order had been cancelled. But being a persistent bastard, I figured I'd try one more time before giving up for the day. I placed another order for pickup at a different Sears store in my area (Houston, TX). To my surprise I got the confirmation e-mail back saying that it was in stock and ready for pickup.
Since it was around lunchtime I drove out there, swiped my credit card in the merchandise pickup kiosk, and sat down. Two minutes later a guy walked out of the stockroom with the DS Lite in hand. He had me sign their little PDA thing that I'd received it, and I walked out of the store with it.
I think, however, that I was pretty damn lucky. After I'd turned my back and was walking out I heard a manager come out of the back and start telling the guy that he "wasn't supposed to do that" and "the item was in the wrong bin." I dunno if they were talking about the DS Lite I just picked up or what, but considering the other stories I've read on here I think it's safe to say that I'm lucky they didn't give me the "recall" business.
Certainly a great way to celebrate my birthday, which also happens to be today. Woot!

That would be great if Wal-mart releases it on the 6th. I pre-ordered at GS, but I'll be out of town on the "official" release date. I'd rather be able to take the thing with me on the trip than wait til after.

Sears in St. Paul has 2. I went to the store personally and I saw them with my own eyesockets. It came up unable to sell when they scanned.
Sears in Coon Rapids has 0 copies.
CompUSA has 0 in Roseville.
Gamestop in Roseville has 0.
Suncoast in Northtown mall doesn't carry it.

Oh crap... I'm from Brazil and came for business to LibertyVille in Illinois, when I heard that DS Lite has broke out the streets I went like crazy to all Target/Wal-Mart/Best-Buy and Sears stores looking for one with no luck at all... The release date is June 11th, I'm wonder if they'll sold out fast enough to don't let me get one. I'll be at Wal-Mart's door at 8 AM on the release...
Damn Illinois... damn Illinois.

My mommy is the manager at Frys and they said they are having a release on the 4th.
My daddy is a manager at Waffle House and read on the clipboard of official release notes from Gamecrazy that they are also having a release party at midnight on the 4th.
This is the newest rumor for a new release date. Enjoy! :D

I got the email confirmation for the Sears at Bellflower Blvd (Long Beach, CA), went down there to pick the system up and they told me that the system was recalled. *sigh*
Apparently, they didn't call me to inform me of this because my phone number didn't' show up on the ticket stub. :/ They did offer me an Animal Crossing bundle instead but I passed on that.

Attention LI CAGs:
The Target in the Broadway Mall in Hicksville, NY had about 20 DS Lites as of 1:45 PM today, Thursday. I asked the guy behind the counter to get one out of the case for me, and he had no problem selling it to me!
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/7396/dslite6yd.png
Also checked the Target in Commack, but it was just the typical big empty space. Best Buy in Commack didn't have them in yet, and I didn't bother checking the Huntington Mall Sears because of all the reports on this site.
But, if you want a DS Lite and are willing to trek to Hicksville (or live nearby) - go for it! They had a lot as of this afternoon, and there were no problems with buying it (aside from me shaking like a leaf while he rung up two people in front of me :P)
That is awesome! My brother works in Hicksville so he's gonna stop by there soon and see if there's any left/they're still selling them. Please let there be :bomb:

I'll check the Enfield, CT Target again in the morning, and while I'm at the mall I may as well swing by work (that is, EBgames) and see if my pre-order is in/the date was actually bumped to June 1st.
Either way, I'm probably cashing in on my warranty to get a brand new sealed old chubs DS and selling that to cover a nice chunk of my lite. As for how I'm going to afford the girlfriend's....
Well, to confirm, Enfield Target DOES have them in, but they are still in the back room. The employee knew what he was talking about and confirmed the sell date of 6/11. There is a big gaping hole in the case where the DSs used to be/should be.
EBgames did not have the shipment in yet as of ~1pm. My buddy said it's still possible we'd get them today, but regardless, they won't be available to the general public until 6/11.
This is so silly, does anyone remember the SP launch? I remember someone on gamefaqs purchasing one from a Toys R Us or something, and since they broke the street date, everyone was allowed to sell it. I got mine at EB the same day the kid posted proof pics of his. This launch on the otherhand, Nintendo is making these companies pull existing stock, and prevent further sales even though some customers have already gotten them... thereby increasing the secondary market value in the brief interim period.
JUST LET THEM SELL IT, IT'S ONLY AN UPGRADE FOR CHRISTS SAKE. It's not like it's a brand new previously unreleased system. It's just what the fucking DS should have been in the first place.

After I'd turned my back and was walking out I heard a manager come out of the back and start telling the guy that he "wasn't supposed to do that" and "the item was in the wrong bin." Certainly a great way to celebrate my birthday, which also happens to be today. Woot!
I was wondering if there was a step between scanning the email, swiping the credit card and walking out with a DS Lite. Wonder why they had me marked in the system as picking it up, if I didn't sign anything. Guess I have that for leverage if they decide to be pricks.
I haven't read about any success stories in the NoVA area, so I'm going to just pack it in a wait, wait, wait, WAIT for my Overstock order. I'm flying on the date of release, so I was hoping to just pick one up before then. Oh well.
JUST LET THEM SELL IT, IT'S ONLY AN UPGRADE FOR CHRISTS SAKE. It's not like it's a brand new previously unreleased system. It's just what the fucking DS should have been in the first place.

Someone had success at Meijer's, which has me thinking. Anybody tried unconventional retailers that no one's mentioned yet? Circuit City is probably a lost cause. But what about TRU, Sam's, Costco, possibly Fry's?Last night I looked for the Lite at several locations in Manhattan, including the Times Square TRU and the Times Square Virgin Megastore. TRU had the old DS behind the counter but no sign of the Lite; Virgin didn't even have the old DS anywhere in sight. I didn't think to look behind the counter.
I also checked out the Best Buys at 45th/Madison and 23rd/6th Avenue. No go. Someone had mentioned seeing it at the Chelsea store, so I was hopeful, but it wasn't to be.

No luck! My brother was just there at the Hicksville Target and they've pulled them from display until the official release date. Oh well, as long as I can get one from somewhere on the 11th I'll be happy. I wasn't really going to touch it until I had an Invisible Shield put on it. Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,
Due to early shipments of the DS Lite going out, a few retailers placed the system for sale before the scheduled June 11 launch date. Because a single launch date benefits all retailers, and to make sure all retailers have received their shipments, we have asked those retailers who have begun to sell the system early to wait until the June 11 release date.

This is what Nintendo wants. I'm not saying its a conspiracy, but Nintendo is king of getting free publicity over mediocre products. The DS Lite is just a prettier DS Fat so it wouldve been released quietly and the main buyers wouldve been hardcore fans who've been waiting months for this.
But now with all this buzz then people who have no interest in the DS Lite are hunting for them because it feels like they're valuable. It just stinks that pretty much every store has them in stock but a silly street date is going to force us to wait.

I doubt it, especially if the EB guys (two have said it to me now) are telling the truth about the stores incurring fines and stock restrictions for breaking the street date.
I imagine most large stores would rather lose your business (they got plenty more) than have proof around that they broke the street date again after knowing the penalty.
I keep hearing about a date change to maybe 6/6, which also happens to be Mike Haggar's height.

Sears.com worked for the store in Tukwila, WA after a cancellation e-mail for a store in Alderwood/Lynnwood. Ordered for pickup, got the e-mail, went to get it, the stock guy asked me what I was picking up. I told him 'the Nintendo DS Lite'. He grabbed one from the back after a few minutes and voila. Thought about getting another one for the wife as the store had a couple on the shelves. The electronics clerk had no problem grabbing it, but when it came to ringing up the purchase, the register displayed something similar to "DO NOT SELL. RETURN TO RTV HOLDING AREA". I didn't argue too much and left. They still had some on the shelves, so anybody in Seattle area trying to get one might want to try Sears.com with instore pickup in Tuckwila. If you just go by the store it ain't gonna happen.

Not equivalent. I'm sure he was interested in getting a DS Lite early, he just said there's no reason to get angry with Nintendo for doing exactly what they said they were going to do. Which is quite true.
Personally, I think it'd be hilarious if they got back at Walmart, Target, etc by allowing ONLY stores who DIDN'T break the street date to start selling them this coming Monday. :D Unfortunately they'd have no way to really enforce that, so I'm sure they won't.

I highly doubt there will be any fines or anything of that nature. If it was one or two stores, then sure, but when its as many stores as it has been, they'll just let it slide. A rash of stores broke street date on a cd earlier in the year, and it never went further than an email. They put the fear of God into us about breaking street dates, but when it actually happens, its never as big of a deal as they make it out to be in the training guide.

There are no "fines" for retailers who sell anything before the release date. I worked at a video store that released a few movies early and all that happens is that certain studios will get pissed and delay your next shipment or not ship to you at all. It's perfectly legal to sell before the street date, and UNLESS there is a specific contract with a specific monetary punishment within that contract, retailers can sell before the date.

It's perfectly legal to sell before the street date, and UNLESS there is a specific contract with a specific monetary punishment within that contract, retailers can sell before the date.
Yeah, I think the most famous instance was WB bitch-slapping Gamestop(?) for selling Lord of the Rings early. Never saw what the end-result was though.

No hope from Target I guess, the news has spreaded...
I was told a Target here in San Diego (Chula Vista actuall) get them in stock and the guy got one earlier today or yesterday. I called to make sure they have it, but they said they couldn't sell it before the street date.....
Well, again... saved me 10 bucks for the drive....

Scored at Sears in Portland, OR (see frapr map).
Ordered online at sears.com and selected in-store pickup. Aside from the Sears in Washington Sq. where I got mine, there were a couple of others selectable with some in stock.
Arrived bright eyed hoping that the warehouse grunt was not aware of the official release date.
Mission accomplished as of 6/1 1:00pm 8-)

Also, when I went to the Babbages to pick up New Super Mario Bros. (after I declined their greedy warranty or w/e the hell costed 3 more bucks) the clerk asks, "Have a lite pre-ordered yet?" Me as I exit: "I have a lite in my backpack." Caught a glimpse of his distraught face as I left. I believe he yelled asking if I got it from Target. I would not have told him anyways.

after browsing this thread, i decided to stop on my way home yesterday, about 3:00 in the afternoon, at the wallmart between freemont and san jose, not exactly sure what city that is. in any case, to my surprise they had about 20 ds lites in the glass. i called an employee over, told him i wanted one, and we got to the counter where it refused to ring up. he called over a manager who called over his manager, etc. until finally, some guy tells me he cant sell me it, has the employee pull all the lites from the shelves, and tells me to come back tomorrow, (which would be today) but i have to think they would be wise to what's going on by now, and i havent been back. anyone been by this walmart or had any success anywhere else in the bay area?

I got these:
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802272
It comes with an extra stylus too. They "officially" were supposed to be out today (6/1) according to the website at Gamestop but the store I went to yesterday already had them out. It took a little bit to get them on but now that they're on there they're hardly noticable.
the picture didnt work. anyway I'm sure they worked good for you, but i think i'll still go for the non residue Hori brand (the non lite models since the lite ones have residue for some reason), i just dont think i would want to get a pelican brand.

DAMNIT! That's so close to me. I checked stores in the area and none had them. I wish I had known to go there. I wonder if they'll have any tomorrow, but I doubt it...my luck :(

I tried both the Target and Wal-Mart in Port Orange, Fl. and neither of them had the ds lite in stock. Wal-Mart had a variety of colors of the old ones and Target had 2 old grey ones. Also the guy @ Target was a real Richard about me asking any questions about the ds lite for some reason. Maybe he knew something...
HAH, I tried that target and walmart, as well as the ones in daytona beach, and the guy in daytona definetly had them in, but not out. i asked if they had got them in yet, and he said "i dont know, but i know i dont have them out." with a tone i have used many times at work.

Theres probably still some at the Meijer near me, but I have mine reserved at GameStop, which is much closer to me then any other places so I always go there for everything. I feel really guilty about the idea of going in there for games and accessories for the DS, not to mention actually getting a refund on that $25, not sure I could look em in the eye. Not that I'm in any hurry to get one, I mean I want one, I've been looking forward to getting one, it will be my first handheld ever... but thats still not motivating me to go check it out.

went to two targets and one walmart yesterday, no luck... then i read that sears is doing it too... ordered one online, saw one by me says it's ready for pick-up, went there... they actually have two, one from my online order... i wanted to buy the other one, they scanned it and on the monitor, it says "do not sell"... the guy made a phone call, after 10 minutes, he found out that they're not suppose to sell it until june 16th... but since I made the purchase online already, they gave me the other one and locked the other one until june 16th... before i even went there this afternoon, they took it off sears.com...
I already pre-ordered online, and since I'm in no rush... I will be selling this one... (of course for a profit)

I ordered online from Sears.com and received an email confirmation for pick-up at the store on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. When I got there they said they tried to call me to cancel the order and a cancelling email had been sent.

SCORE! Stopped in this morning and none on shelf. Spoke with a few people who were extremely nice and they checked the back and return with 10. They're all in the display now and none left in back so if its gone then its gone.
Major Disappointment: No wriststrap on the US DS Lites. The JPN version comes with a nice looking all white strap (no thumb strap though) and the US one has nothing. Why does Japan hate us?
Update: I was attaching my old DS strap and noticed that the thumbstrap part will probably scratch the hell out of the glossy finish so this just makes things worse. Why the hell couldnt they give us that 4cent thumbstrap that the JPN models got?

I just listened to the IGN Week-In-Review podcast (they've got nothing on Cheapy and Wombat) and Craig Harris -- one of the few IGN editors I respect -- was waxing rhapsodic about the Lite. Only made me want it more. They also pointed out how no one's really discussed the fact that the regular DS is being unofficially discontinued, which fits with the gaping holes we've all been seeing. Looks like the Lite will be the only game in town from here on out.

What is that supposed to mean? I worked at Target on overnights when i was a young pup and we sold some star trek or some other figure a week early and the guy running that dept on overnights(stock crew) was handed his pink slip due to the fines our store received.
It normally states right on the box the street date.

What do you expect them to say? They're counter jockeys for a smaller company getting skunked by the huge retailers. They charge more, inconvenience customers with preorders that they don't need, rip off customers on trade-ins, and generally demonstrate no reason to exist other than the fact that they generally get releases before the big box stores. So when the big box stores get it first, they're ticked.
Nintendo will not charge Target, WalMart, Sears, or anyone else a $1,000 per unit penalty, even though they may very well have some sort of vague retailer agreement that states that. As has already been pointed out in this thread, Nintendo depends way too much on the WalMarts, Targets, Sears, and even EB/GS of this world to jeopardize relations with ridiculous fines like this.

We got the same response from the GS employees as well. It's funny how passionately the GS/EB folks defend "breaking the street date", like it's the Word of God or something. I realize they are intent on not losing pre-orders or walk-in sales, but still...
...I really don't think Nintendo is going to enforce any fines on their retailers just for selling their products a little early, especially huge ones like Target and Wal-mart, though it seems most places have locked down on it.

I called up the Target in Santa Ana (see mini_boss' post) and the guy said, "Yes, we do have them in stock in the back..but that they couldn't sell 'em until the 11th". He also said. "..All the stores have the DS Lites in stock, actually."
Weird, though, how some of the stores are still "accidentally" selling them 2 days after the fact. I still don't understand why they don't just push up the release date, now that the cat's been let out of the bag. The hype will fade. Those are impulse buys they are missing out on.

In defense of stores like Target or Walmart, telling the difference between a DS and DS Lite box is just as hard as telling the difference between Cheetos Puffs and Cheetos shriveled rat tails. Even if you're familiar with the product (which these guys arent) then the packaging is so similar you just assume they're all the same thing.
I got lucky with the DS Lite in Santa Ana, CA but it did take some manipulation. Looking at the box then its a 2 screen gameboy except now its white. You can't fault a guy for not being able to tell the difference. It probably wasn't until some schmuck called in and said "I want to buy one of that new DS that isn't supposed to be sold yet. Some guy on the internet told me you're selling early" before they realized the mistake.
And as for fines, get real. 75% of sales probably comes from Target or Walmart so there's no chance they want to piss them off.

I called up the Target in Santa Ana ...
Not you in particular, but someone calling is probably what killed it. When there are deals involving discounts, clearances, early releases etc then the worst thing to do is give them time to think by calling ahead. Alot of times its the employees themselves that buy hot items immediately after you tip them off that its there.
I still don't understand why they don't just push up the release date, now that the cat's been let out of the bag. The hype will fade. Those are impulse buys they are missing out on.
First off, they aren't missing out on the sale. They'll all sell out of their first shipment regardless of when they put it out.
Secondly, the reason they don't push the release date is because of the ads. Those Sunday ads are printed several weeks in advance. So on June 11 then if they have a big DS Lite on the cover and no DS Lite in stock at 7AM then you'll have alot of pissed off people. It sucks for them because they have to keep the product in the back and listen nonstop to annoying customers asking for something they're forced to keep in the back.
[/B] And as for fines, get real. 75% of sales probably comes from Target or Walmart so there's no chance they want to piss them off.
Exactly, Nintendo needs Target & Walmart much more than they need Nintendo.

To the people who insist on reminding people the ills of buying/selling products before their street date. Find something else to worry about. This should be the least of your problems.
Some people got lucky and got it early. Good for them. Leave it at that.

Yes, there's so many other things to discuss. Gas prices, the war, immigration, Nick Lachey's new girlfriend, global warming. But then discussing those things in a thread specifically about the DS Lite breaking street date wouldn't make sense now would it?
------EDIT: (I'll put my response to this putz here so I dont distract the thread even more)-----
Talking about it negatively is pointless.
Did the topic creator take a jab at the store he bought it from?
Talking about where/how/when you can get a DS Lite early is a tad different from being a crusader for companies who break the street date.
:applause: Congratulations for picking up on that.
Who died and made you God? (oh yeah, Jesus).
Its a discussion thread. Some posts are useful and some posts arent. But regardless of it all, EVERY single post in this thread was on topic except yours because you decided to lecture people for not obeying your personal rules of etiquette. Leave moderating to the moderators. They're less assy.

They caught on because IGN decided to tip Nintendo off. Street date violations happen all the time, but nothing happens (usually, stores will start selling it too if a competitor does) unless someone makes a big stink about it. We were warned all about selling stuff early when I worked at Cockbusters, but if Walmart decided to sell it earlier? Hell, it was on like Donkey Kong (serious pun intended).

If you want a DS Lite, the Sears in the Florence Mall has, as of a few hours ago, exactly 1 DS fat blue system in stock. RUN before someone gets it! LOL I swung in to peek since I was just across the street and they have no Lites and just that one fat. :D

I got lucky with the DS Lite in Santa Ana, CA but it did take some manipulation. Looking at the box then its a 2 screen gameboy except now its white. You can't fault a guy for not being able to tell the difference.
So, you just walked in, asked the guy in electronics if they had any white gameboys, and they went to the back and brought you one out? The Targets I've been to didn't have any DS lites on display, but now I'm tempted to go back and ask them to check in the back.

What time did you buy your DS lite yesterday? I'm in the central FL area, but when I ordered it yesterday, they called saying it was "recalled". This was around 3:00pm yeterday.

The Targets and Wal-Mart stores all should have their supply back in the stock room. Getting them to ring up the sale is where you might have to pull off some manipulation tactics.

I posted this already in the Atlanta search thread. I stopped by a K-Mart today on a whim and asked if they had the 'white DS' and got a very surprising "Yes we do." from the clerk, and there it was sitting in the front glass case. He got it out for me and went to ring it up, but the computer wouldn't allow it because he said it had a release date associated with it. He pulled out the Sunday ads for the next two weeks and found the June 11th date and apologized repeatedly that he couldn't sell it to me. Ah well. At least he was a nice guy about it. Thinking now, I should've asked him if I could see the ad to see if they're going to have any good deals on games for it.

You know what's weird? I picked mine up Wednesday morning around 9:30 AM. Had no hassle at all getting them to sell it to me. I go back in there late yesterday afternoon and just out of curiousity decided to check and see if they were all gone and low and behold there were still like 10 in the case! It was like I was the only person that bought one and it had been over 24 hours. Puzzling the way people are scrambling all over the country trying to buy one and in my town, it appears people couldn't care less about it.

Thanks to jbobchi, I have a DS lite. (Bolingbrook, IL) I went to the Meijer near 55 and Boughton and they had nothing. Then I went to the one where jbobchi went to and guess what.... 3 ds lites! This was last night around 8:30pm. So I grabbed one. The lady/girl behind the counter there got it out and we rang it up right there. It did seem like she was doing something on the POS for a while before the transaction finished so maybe there was a street date lock on it she bypassed. Maybe she also took em out of the case though, sorry guys =\ The 3 were all the way at the back of the display case, so it looked like there would have been a lot more in there at one point. So maybe they just sold em all instead of taking away the last 2. I was surprised no one got to them before I did (within 1 hour of the post by jbobchi) but maybe I was paying too close attention to this thread :) Thanks, woot!

He only bought 2 for Ebay, and he kept one for himself?
Wow, he does a shitty job at Ebay then... even if he did decide to resell one, what's the problem there? I'm pretty sure that Target had 30 + of them... they aren't going for alot over retail anyways to really make that much of a difference.
You better believe if I had the chance to make a few bucks grabbing an extra that I would... nothing wrong with Ebay at all. It's too much cash to drop at one time for a profit, though, so I'm happy waiting a week and getting one at Gamestop where I'm only paying $60 out of pocket (thanks to that DS trade-in deal).

I was contemplating on whether or not to pick up one, but then I realized I can wait. I still have my $25 at EB and I'm going camping for the majority of next week anyways.
I called my local Sears the first day I heard about this, Wednesday I think, and they said they had a bunch. I called yesterday and the guy said he had never seen him. I told him I called earlier and you guys had them and he said "Nope, never seen them." I'm guessing they found out that they weren't supposed to sell them yet, pulled them off the shelves, and don't want anyone to know.

I don't see why it would be assumed people are going just to eBay them. You wouldn't get much on eBay anyway, certainly not much more than retail + costs of auction/Paypal. It would be best to wait until everybody goes out and sees they can't find one on the 11th, then sell it to somebody desperate.
Or just sell it to the Japanese.

It normally states right on the box the street date.
Except in this case it doesn't. We still have whats left of our shipment sitting in our stockroom in the box that it shipped in. Nowhere on it or in it was anything about a street date at all.
That said, in a related story, we recently broke street date on a bunch of Star Wars collectibles accidently. Never heard a word about it. Maybe I just work at a Target that gets lucky with these things.

Just got back from the Atlantic Avenue Target in Brooklyn. Managed to snag a lite for me, and one for the girlfriend.
I found a worker in housewares, asked if he could do a stock check for me, and gave him the product code for the Lite: 207 01 0007
His handheld computer thing said that they were all in the stockroom, so he went back there and returned with 2 brand new ds lites.
Complete credit for this idea goes to JETFIRE714 on Fatwallet, as soon as I read his post it seemed just clever enough to work. I just had to try since there were absolutely no stores that broke the street date here.

Ohio CAGs, listen up!
Called Target. They had it in the back.
Arrive at Target. No one around in electronics (as usual). Push shiny red button.
Old dude shows up. With the computer gun thing.
Show him that there aren't any Lites in the case. Tell him the number (actually inadvertantly memorized it... good thing I did). Says it's in the back.
Wait.
Wait.
Puts about seven DS Lites in the case. Sells me one.
The Target on Princeton Rd. in Hamilton/Fairfield Township.
Have fun.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I used the "JETFIRE714" code system. 207 01 0007 is the magic word y'all. Call 'em up, see if they have it, and proceed from there as you please.

It really does seem to be the luck of getting there when the right (/wrong) person decides "hey, these should be out on the shelf!"
I just went and tried the product number idea with a very nice gentleman who knew nothing about the DS... he typed it in and it came up on his hand computer, but wouldn't tell him whether there were any in the store room or not. He asked somebody else (who I also think didn't know anything about the DS) and she told him that meant there weren't any. Which I know to be untrue, since I spoke to the actual electronics guys there about it on Wednesday and they told me they were in the back, but I wasn't going to push my luck, because she said I was the second person to ask about it.
There's one more semi-local Target store I could try the product number thing on tomorrow, but they're a 25 minute drive away, so I'll have to decide whether it's really worth almost an hour round trip to maybe strike out again. Every day I keep trying is one day less that it's "early", after all.
I just tried the product number thing at the target here in Cupertino, no dice. Showed up on the employee scanner device, but the employee said it was saying they didn't have any.
If anyone finds any in the bay area please let me know, I'll be happy to pay $10 extra if they pick up one for me.
