I am sure its in the 39 pages somewhere. Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FO4KO8/ref=pd_ts_vg_8/104-8647525-1271908?n=471280&s=videogames&v=glance) is currently selling pre-orders if you want to save your gas money.
Buying them for june 11th isn't the issue here. It's getting one now and early.
You will be able to get these most anywhere come june11th/12th.

Ohio CAGs, listen up!
Called Target. They had it in the back.
Arrive at Target. No one around in electronics (as usual). Push shiny red button.
Old dude shows up. With the computer gun thing.
Show him that there aren't any Lites in the case. Tell him the number (actually inadvertantly memorized it... good thing I did). Says it's in the back.
Wait.
Wait.
Puts about seven DS Lites in the case. Sells me one.
The Target on Princeton Rd. in Hamilton/Fairfield Township.
Have fun.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I used the "JETFIRE714" code system. 207 01 0007 is the magic word y'all. Call 'em up, see if they have it, and proceed from there as you please.
I did virtually the same thing last nite. I just ran into some pretty little girl in the area where they sell picture frames and stuff. Gave here the number and five minutes later I was at the register checking out!

After being told they have the DS Lites in stock last night but can't sale til the 11th. I'm now interested in using this # technique. And I get the basics of it, find someone in another department who looks gullable. Then I just go up, and ask them if they have this items # in stock? Is that how you guys have been doing it?

They caught on because IGN decided to tip Nintendo off. Street date violations happen all the time, but nothing happens (usually, stores will start selling it too if a competitor does) unless someone makes a big stink about it. We were warned all about selling stuff early when I worked at Cockbusters, but if Walmart decided to sell it earlier? Hell, it was on like Donkey Kong (serious pun intended).
Wait, what? IGN tipped off Nintendo? What happened?

here's my post from fatwallet.. basically tells you what to do with the DPCI#... trying to find someone in another dept. is key.. electronics most likely won't sell them or go to the stockroom to get it... so browse around target first and choose your friend...
my buddy and I were able to get 2 from the Target in Santa Ana, CA on Bristol and 17th.. right across from Santa Ana College... we tried the one on Bristol close to Macarthur but there was a lesbian total butch that wouldn't sell them to us... she told us that they would come out in 2 months so we tried another associate... and she said they were instock, in the back, but butch wouldn't give her the keys to retrieve them in the back...
anyways.. the DPCI# IS 207 01 0007.. so what exactly do u do with this #??
first off.. find someone with a Scanner thing... its called an LRT...
tell them you need a stock check and you need to find its location... then tell them that you have the DPCI#?
if they're nice.. they should pull it up... find locations in the back.. and voila.. you've got a ds lite a couple days early...
here's some pics... just got back.. haven't opened it yet.. and yes i did buy nursing pads for my wife and i got 10% off...

i avoided telling them it was for the ds lite...
approach them.. excuse me, could you do a stock check, i'd like to know if you have any locations for a particular item... usually they'll say for what item... then just say, i have the DPCI#, if that will help...
may or may not work...

Tell them you are looking for Nintendoes. And let that be it.
This method doen't work where I live. My Target stores have them in the back in boxes with big red stickers on them..JUNE 11TH. So both times I tried this they said they had them, went to the back to grab one and came back with the bad news.
Anyone in GA having any luck?

Couldn't have said it any better myself. Did what snood posted and it worked! After going to multiple stores (Target, Meijer, Sears, Walmart, etc.) in or around Chicago and the West Suburbs, I decided what the hell. So I got up early this morning and decided to head down to a Target close to my house. I tried it at the Target in Brickyard first with no luck. I asked a girl who I THOUGHT was holding one of the guns. She took me straight to the Electronics counter so I knew my plan was over. So I headed out to the next closest Target. This one:
Norridge Target
4050 N Harlem Ave , Norridge, IL 60706-1202 US
I got there, found a person with a gun, and asked her. But instead of checking it right away, she took me back to the electronics section. But luckily, no one was there. So she called a random associate on here walkie talkie to come over for assistance. A guy came over and I told him that I was looking for a gameboy and I had the stock number and was just wondering if they had any in stock for me to buy. He punced in the number in his little gun about 5 times, checked the case, and told me he'd be right back. At this point, I'm sweating balls.
Seriously.
Miniature testicles were coming out of my pores.
So anyway, he comes back and asks me if this is it. And I say yeah that's it. I say thanks a lot. And he so he asks me when is this thing supposed to come out? And I say I don't know but I've been looking like crazy. So it rings up no problem and I'm standing there shaking while handing him the money. I walk out and my saga ends!
So... Long story short, by now, every target has them. It's really not a matter of finding the store, but finding the right associate. There is a bit of luck involved, but common sense will get you through most of it. But for everyone else...
Tip 1:
Avoid saying DS Lite as much as possible. Say Gameboy if you have to.
Tip 2:
Try finding people who you know will most likely not know anything about the DS Lite or gaming in general. Older women or girls in general work best.
Tip 3:
Try to go in the morning. When you go early in the morning when Target opens, there is an ABUNDANCE of people with scanning guns stocking items for the day. This'll give you a better selection of marks to choose from.
Well, hope that helped. The DS is really as beautiful as the pictures make it look. And without further ado, THE PICS!

You people go through too much trouble for this... geez, in a week every store will have a billion of these things on the shelf. I mean, geez, one guy went to 20 stores..? I think I'd rather wait a week then burn through a gas tank and time.
I did see a guy go up to the electronics desk today, tell a guy he called earlier and had a DS Lite on hold (this was at 12 pm today) and the desk guy tells him "Um...no, I was the only one here all morning, nobody has asked for one, but nice try, try again on the 11th".

I tried two Targets and two Walmarts and neither had Lite's on the shelf. At the one Target I tried the trick of telling them that I called earlier and they were holding one for me. The guy was just about to go to the back and get me one when his manager came over and she told me they couldnt sell it till next week. Ohh well it's just another week, I'll just pick it up then.

I'm still pissed at Target. My story was similar (to the one above) except that I actually did have one on hold but they refused to sell it to me. I know that noone really gets in trouble for these kind of things (there are no fines, only slaps on the wrist). I just thought it was BS that I drove out 10 miles after they told me I'd be able to pick one up.

Well, I tried the stock # trick this afternoon with a nice young lady in the housewares dept. of my local Target. She punched the code into her gun, and it bleated out a series of quick beeps. She said they didn't have them, and asked if it was something I'd found "on the internet." She told me that not everything on Target.com is in-store. I just agreed with a smile and left her alone.
Anyway, they do have them in stock, as confirmed by a guy in the games dept. (later), and by the fact that I punched the code into one of those price check stations (just use the numbers along the right side, and hit enter), so I guess her gun returned a message different from the price check station, which had said "in stockroom", and "N/A" for aisle location.
Oh well... I scored a used copy of Phoenix Wright elsewhere earlier today, so I'm feeling pretty good. :)

Heh, just came across this thread linked from Gamespot and saw that Trakan went to the Oak Creek, WI target to get his.
I work at the Target on 27th and Layton in Milwaukee, and work Electronics around twice a week.
We got a note on our computer system message board not to sell them until street, and all of the Electronics employees have been told so, as well as the backroom people (So all of you people trying to snag one from the backroom under our noses most likely won't get far in our store...).
We're used to people wanting things from the backroom that we cannot sell because of Star Wars toys that have definite street dates that we cannot sell before.
@j.roc525: We're trained extensively against guys with tactics such as yours. It's hilarious to see people on the other side. :)
@edavis0780: If we break street date and sell something that cannot be sold before the date, we risk our jobs. I've never seen someone get fined/etc for breaking street, but I have seen someone almost lose their job because of it.

Look if someone wants to go though the trouble to get something they want (say a DS LITE) then thats their bussiness. This Thread about the joys of people wanting a Ds Lite "EARLY" I think you tried and falied ''shitty" now your just upset because you didn't get one. If you want to wait to June 11th then please do so just stop craping on people because they have one early and you don't. It's also funny that your on a thread about the Ds Lites early and you don't even have one BUT WAIT you'll have one on June 11th... if your not broke or cheap. lol

Well I walked around Target looking for an employee with one of those machine things to use to scan items. I asked her "Could you check if there's an item in stock for me please?"
Then you tell them you have the item number, which is 207 01 0007. She called the back and they said they had it.
Then she went into the back and got me the DS Lite. I thought it was over when they rang it up at the electronics section! I got it even though the Target was already reported as a No Go Target in the SoCal DS Lite thread.

Yeah, i'd say the June 6th report is either a mistaken employee, the date on the Nintendo Brain Age box or the store just trying to get you out of their hair for a few days. The best bet really is to just sit tight and not think about the DS Lite, or just be persistant going every day and hoping a worker didn't read the memo.
Either way, I am so glad I found mine and don't have to waste any more gas.

No idea, but every Walmart around me (8) all say June 11th. And like I said before, I saw the red stickers on the boxes that read NO SALE UNTIL JUNE 11th. So unless that has changed, it's a no go around me.

Yeah thanks for that, I tried ur method at a closer Target, but they didn't have any, so i just drove all the way over there and snagged the last one!
Now i just gotta figure out what to do about that adapter for my trip to china....
Hi all, I picked up a second one using SNOOD's method (THANKS) if anyone is interested. I did open it very very carefully with no damage to the box (and you have to look closely to see any evidence of opening on the clear seal). In any case, it worked and I noticed only one slightly "off" pixel on the lower touch screen. The one I have has has a similar pixel on the upper screen and I would not consider it return worthy.
I'm just going to return it.

Did they tell you this in person? They told me the 6th over the phone.
I was told this in person. To paraphrase "They're in a large sealed box labeled June 6th". I've had more than one employee tell me the 6th was the day to be there and I've had one tell me the 11th.

If you're interested, PM me. To make it worth my while, I'll have to get $165 shipped, priority mail, payable by non-credit card paypal. If there's no response I'll just return it. I apologize if this is deemed to be in the wrong forum, moderators please delete if this is a problem.

Sure, charge us $30 extra for your own profit for an opened, dead pixel DS Lite. Whatever makes it "worth your while." Or you could be a decent CAG and sell it to a fellow CAG for price + shipping. Afterall, you only have it due to another CAG.
But whatever, it's your DS Lite.

With tax, he is only making $15. The DS was prob. $138, and $165 through paypal turns into $158 or so. Not to mention he still has to ship it. Regardless, it comes out in 1 week, maybe earlier.

Yeah seriously. If you can't get it early from Target or where ever don't waste extra money buying it from somebody trying to make an extra buck off an early Lite.

Agreed. It should be easy enough to get one next week. It looks like many stores are well stocked and ready to go for next Sunday.

I just tried the product number trick and eventually got with a girl in electronics that had no idea what the ds lite was. She went in the back to get one from the stock room and can out empty handed. She said the box is marked not to sell before June 6th. She said that they would be out on the shelf at 8am tomorrow. So I guess I will be getting my ds lite finally tomorrow morning. For and CAGs in central Florida its the Target in Viera, Fl.

So I went to target and first this girl with a gun had no idea how to use it, but it's ok because it's her first day. She called someone else over, used the gun, and went to go grab one. Came back with a lite in her hands. She asked me "is this it for you?" and I said yes. She took it over to electronics where this girl said, in the meanest way possible, "we can't sell that till the 11th."
So, if had said I needed to get some milk as well, would she have handed to me, or would she have told me to pick it up from electronics later? I'm thinking of going to a different target tonight or going back to the same one and hope for different people.
Whats the trick to bypass the entire electronics department? I want to check out at the front.

It's frustrating trying to get our hands on these things, but I have to say I feel for some of these CSRs that have to deal with the constant flood of people trying to scam an early Lite. I can't blame them for being pissy (although, it's still terrible service).

Thanks Snood! Scored one at the Whittier Target early in the morning. Try and ask the people that are actively scanning prices for other items. I asked this one girl who was scanning books (near the electronics section) and she got it right away. Try not to go later on in the day only because it seems as though the late workers have all been tipped off.

My guess would be just another flub, primarily (as I think somebody might have mentioned before in the thread) because of the ads.
The ads have already been printed for Walmart and Target that'll go out this week telling everybody to show up on the 11th and get their kid a DS Lite. They have a lot more pissed off people to deal with if they sell out before the 11th and don't get more in than they do by turning us away until the 11th.
That said, of course, if they DO start selling 'em tomorrow, hey, I'll be there. ;)

From the late & wrong category:
I tried to pick up my DS Lite at Sears on Irving Park Rd this weekend. I had the "Ready to pick up email". I got the "Sorry, but the DS Lite has been cancelled, recalled, not yet for sale, on hold, and doesn't exist" line from the Sears rep. Well, at least come June 11th, I'll definitely have one waiting for me to pick up.
I also stopped by my local GameCrazy and the manager there said Nintendo didn't send them any Lites yet because they know "we'll sell them early and break the street date". All 25 of their first shipment has been paid for already, but he said they are getting another shipment Monday and Tuesday of at least 50 more each time.
On a different note, he also said Nintendo is looking for a lot of retail support for the Wii, so they are shipping as many Lites as the stores can handle. I'm guessing to build some loyalty so when the Wii comes out, stores will push that as much as they do the DS Lite.

Yet another reason why Nintendo won't be assessing big fines on retailers for streeting the Lite early.

$1000 for something they probably only make $5 profit on? Not a chance. I'd have to guess the guy was BS'ing you because if its true then its the first time in history any major retailer was fined for breaking street date EVER.

I had tried two targets earlier, the one on Coleman and the one on Capitol, and then headed up the 680 to this store. There is now only one DS Lite left in storage there. I asked a woman stocking shoes if she could check the stock of number 207 01 0007, she took me over to the person at a computer near the changing rooms, saying something about how there was a security notice on that item number in her little LRT device. I was sweating bullets, and told to go wait at guest services for someone to bring it out. The returns lady was busy with a long line, so when a guy walked out with it, I thanked him, and walked straight to an empty checkout lane at the front of the store. In and out in under 10 minutes. (and the security notice was only because it was in a locked-up area in back b/c of it being electronic or something). I stopped at the gamestop where I had reserved a DS Lite on my way home, walked into the store with it still in the target bag, and got the deposit refunded without any grief.
Here are some general tips I picked up along the way:
MOST IMPORTANT: You'll have success pulling this off in Targets where the electronics section is NOT located near the storeroom doors; two non-electronics employees I asked at the first store just told me to go ask the guys IN electronics, as they were right next to the back room. Ideally, you want women's clothing to be close to the storage rooms, and yes, pick an older woman as your mark, but she MUST have one of those LRT (big electronic price reading guns) in her hand.
Tell your mark that you called ahead, was told they're in stock, but saw only empty shelves, and that the only person in electronics was busy w/ another customer. I pretended that my girlfriend needed me to pick this up for her brother's birthday (any dumb story will work, but it did help to throw in that she used to work at target, explaining why you knew what a dcpi number is. Employees prefer having these for item lookup, so they'll be understanding and greatful in the process.) Act as though you are in a slight hurry, this again helps with the reasonableness of bothering a non-electronics employee.
Good luck everyone, and thanks to all who posted earlier; I couldn't have done this without you.

Just thought I'd post a few pictures. As for the people who are having trouble using the product number at Target, go in the morning (no later than 10am). It seems like all the smart-ass workers seem to arrive after that time. I also noticed that there appeared to be no specific person manning the electronics desk at that time (a lady from the nearby book section helped me).
As for the PSP/DS Lite comparison shots; damn close. The DS Lite actually has the slight edge when the PSP is not connected to the charger but they're just about equal when the PSP is charging.

My story. Thanks for the DCPI trick guys!
(Also, intelli78! Hi! Nice to see a fellow Tucsonian on here.)
Target #1 (Grant Rd.). I check the display case and of course, nothing there. So I try to find a clueless girl in another department.. and there's a girl working in like rubbermaid containers or something.. score. I have the inventory code memorized so I ask her if she can look up the stock of it. She says it says they're in stock and on the shelves. I tell her they're not there. Yet she of course doesn't believe me so she wants to go look anyway. Of course they're not there, so I hint several times that maybe their in the back room, yet she keeps insisting the computer says there is none there. I finally give up on her after she just stares blankly ahead, not doing anything, for about ten seconds.
So after a few more errands, I'm on my way back home, hit the last Target near my place (Old Spanish Trail). There are no DS in the case as expected. However, there is a Target guy milling around right in front of electronics, along with some other knowledgeable-looking Target guys going back and forth.. setting up a vicious zone defense. I am certain they know the story of the DS lite, and I have doubts that I should even continue. Just then I happen upon one of those UPC code scanners and punch in the code and it says they're in stock in the stockroom and not on the aisle! Exactly what I was looking for. So I figure now I at least have to try. I turn away from the scanner when what do I see, but a nice Target lady looking like she just came from the stock room with some items for other customers. Perfect! Her tag says her name is Maria. I ask her if she check on the item. After some hesitation and looking towards the knowledgeable-looking Target guys (nooo), she actually calls the back room! Phase one complete! The stock room guy answers, and I figure he's *got* to know whats up. Regardless, I plod ahead. After screwing up the item code like 5 times, the guy finally keys it in right and says they have them in the electronics stock room and to meet him over there! Awesome! In the meantime, Maria is asking me "Do you have a photographic memory?" to which I laugh off saying I remember numbers easily such as my high school friend's phone number. Up to this point I had tried to be generic as possible, referring to the item only as a Nintendo, as to not to raise suspicion. However, she asked if it was a game, so I finally let loose that it was Nintendo DS. We start walking over to electronics, and she's like "Oh! I thought those were out of stock!" I'm like.. "Shiiiiiiit." Bad goes to worse as she walks up to the guy milling about in front of electronics and starts talking to him about it. On the outside, I'm trying to play it cool, acting dumb, but on the inside I'm freaking out going "CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP." As she's talking to this guy, he gets this look about him like he's trying to remember something.... almost as if he's read something about the DS.. like they're not supposed to sell it until June 11th.. and he just can't quite remember. That look scares the shit out of me, since I figure he'll remember any second. The stock guy comes up at that point, and he looks like he knows what he's doing, which dims the hope some, but he at least drags us over to the electronics stock room away from the other guy. The stock guy and Maria go into the stock room, as I idly look at DVD's next to the door. I had originally agreed to pick up two for friends at work, Matt and Jason, if I managed to find any, but at this point, I'm thinking she'll only be coming back with one and I'll be lucky to get away with that one by the skin of my teeth. I hear an "Oh crap" from the door, of which I immediately think "Aw fuck, they saw the "do not sell to June 11th" sign on the box." Yet, they do not come out immediately. Then a minute late, Maria emerges carrying 4 DS lites! My eyes light up and internally I go "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!" She hands me one and starts to head to the case with the other three. I meekly ask if I can have another two that I was getting for my friends, and she obliges. At this point, I'm like "WOOT!! HOME FREE!! Now time to GTFO!" Yet again I try and play it cool, so I decide I need to mask the DS lites in case anyone is on the up-n-up and sees them. I pause in a DVD aisle for a minute, pick up Full Metal Jacket to cover the DS lites with and am about to briskly walk to the register... when I hear a "Sir! Sir!" Maria is calling me. I think "AHHHHH FUCK ! I SHOULD HAVE BOOKED IT! I WAS SO CLOSE! I HAD THEM IN MY HAND!! WHY DID I HAVE TO PAUSE?" Maria jaunts nearby and says... "I'm going to have to ring you up at the electronics register since we got those from the stockroom." Amazed and bewildered, I quickly pay and walk calmly yet quickly out of the store, as I hear Maria start talking with the stock room guy and the random Target guy in front of electronics about something DS related. I get outside and laugh manically as I skip to my truck as people stare uncomprehendingly.
Today was a good day.
Thanks guys.

Well, almost 8:00 and no posts of "Hey! Walmart's got DS's on sale! :D" so I'm guessing that was just another clueless employee unable to read.

I would guess that it'll be just like last week - you'll see a number of stores try to sell these things today (confusing CD/DVD Tuesday releases with the whole DS Lite thing), but soon Nintendo will find out, and the whole business will be stopped.
As near as I could tell, nobody in the Northeast was able to weasel one out of an employee, so I gave up trying myself. I have a preorder in at EB Games for my girlfriend, so went back there and put in a preorder for myself last night (they're still quoting the 11th as the street date). At this point it's only five more days, and this thing is something of an impulse purchase anyway, so I'll just enjoy Guild Wars until Sunday.

What's the main reason to be selling DS Lite today? The street date is June 11th, what about the fine for each unit sold?

No dice at the local Walmart. I'll try others as the day progresses. I noticed something as I combed the empty electronics section though. A notice pinned up (that nobody saw) that had *just* gotten there warning employees not to sell the Lite. I believe it also listed a product number. 580143, use it at your own decretion as I have no idea what its used for or its relevance to the Lite.
I was so damned close to getting it too.

Probably from the 2 boxes in the stock room. One says "Nintendo DS Brain Academy - June 6" and one says "Nintendo DS Lite - June 11".
Its a gamble, but considering how easy it is to mistake the two brown Nintendo crates then there is a good chance that they'll also make the mistake of putting the Lites on shelf Jun 6. Either way, I sure am glad I found mine already. I'd hate to be wasting time still looking for one.

Okay... I've tried to get this stupid thing (there I said it) at two Target stores already. They have the units in the back store room, thats a fact. confirmed on there price checkers, and the gun units. Now why they won't sell them is out right stupid. Now here I am in two stores two separate times already ready to purchase a $129.99 item only to be refused by some minimum-wage employee on a power trip. Not to mention how stupid they make me feel when I walk out of there feeling like I was trying to steal something from them. I'm not... I'm paying asking price for the item. I say we revolt... So, I just got back from my little Target excursion trying the Snood's method with the DPCI. It went pretty badly. -____-
Target 1: We don't have any. DPCI thing says none in stock room.
Target 2: Brought me to the electronics when I asked. The woman I tracked down was about to go back and get me one, but then some other person came by and was like "LOL IS DS LITE?! STREET DATE YEAH?! NO SELL!".
Target 3: Talked to some girl in housewares who was really nice and went straight away to get one for me. She came back empty handed and said "the lady back there wouldn't let me take it, come back Sunday".
Target 4: We don't have any. DPCI thing says none in stock room.
I must have awful luck or the Target employees in my area are all fairly sharp. Anyone know if it will really make a difference if I go in right at 8am when they open? >_>;;

Sorry Coconut, it's because if the minimum wage employee gets caught selling the thing by their manager, they might lose their job. Minimum wage better than no wage.
A number of people got them early because employees sold them accidentally. It's pretty clear to most stores by now that they're not allowed to sell until the 11th, so it's going to be very difficult to find someone willing to break the street date. Possible, but very unlikely.

I'm with you, I wonder how many CAG got Target employees fired or "wrote up" just so they can have the DS a few days early? It is one thing if they put it on the shelf and you buy it, it is another thing to use deception to have an employee to go in the backroom and dig it out for you. A new low for CAG. I hope CAG is not taking food out of any baby/kids mouth to be the first to have a DS lite.

Agreed spoo. Last week I went to a few stores to look at the shelves, and asked one employee if they were selling it (at a Wal-Mart where they put one out as a demo). Since I ended up empty, I stopped. It just isn't worth it to me to pull even deeper deception to get something that will be out in (what's now) less than a week.
It's cool for the few that got them early, but now it's bordering on ridiculous what some people are trying to do to scam one out of a store a mere 5 days before official release.

The worst thing that will happen is that Nintendo will learn to ship things out closer to the street date. Nobody can be fired unless they can prove thate they were intentionally selling DS Lites before the street date. I work at a video store and there are times when we open movies before the street date and all that has happened is that we recieve a phone call from the studios. Target and Wal-Mart will NOT get in any type of trouble. The boxes, shipped from NINTENDO, do not have a 'Street Date June 11' anywhere on them. How were they suppose to know? Atleast at EB/Gamestop, they KNOW the exact day they are suppose to come out. The only one to blame is Nintendo for not communicating with stores that are obviously not knowledgeable.

You must have no idea how retail works. Vendors can receive big fines if they break the street date. This applies to all sorts of different products, but is more fiercely enforced for games, movies, and music. It helps to promote the idea of a fair marketplace. ... And piss people like us off, of course.

No, this is nothing like 'suggested retail price'. They have contracts on certain items to indicate release date and breaking it is subject to fine. Now most likely they won't fine them, but legally they can.

I went to the Newport News Target Greatland after work today. I actually drove 20 miles outside of my normal route in the opposite direction to attempt this. Which only makes that ride home empty handed all the more depressing. I called on the way there and spoke to the operator. She asked me what exactly I was looking for. Kinda like she knew I was looking for this particular item. I told her a Nintendo DS Lite. She called Electronics and put me on hold. She came back on, and said "yep, they have three." I said they told you they have three? , she said "yes". I said, "DS Lites?", She said, "that's what they are telling me" So I went there. I enter the Target from the right side entrance which has the electronics section immediately to your right when you enter. I searched the display case and saw three of the "fat boy DS'" Oh great.... they mixed it up. I walked over to the counter amongst all the digital cameras and a kid up there asked if he could help me. I asked him if he had any Nintendo DS'? he said, I'm aware of all the stuff going on with them right now and all the stuff on the internet associated with them. We've got them, but we're not allowed to sell them until the 11th. I was noticeable upset, since I drove out this far already. He automatically asked if I wanted him to radio the manager. which I agreed to. Shortly afterward, this Alec Baldwin look-alike shows up and he tells him the situation. He flips through a flyer, and appears to be looking for it. Opens up the drawer under the cameras and pulls one out... kind of teasing me with it... Wow, my first glimpse. hehe, But I knew it was a doomed endeavour at this point. He flipped open some black notebook with some blue highlighted words on it, that supposedly stated that the 11th is the actual "street date" on this. I pleaded my case about the operator telling me that they had it, my drive, and the fact that I wasn't trying to steal it, they shouldn't treat me like I'm doing something wrong. He said they would get fined if they sold it, and the one they sold earlier today was a mistake (I guess they were talking about you Takotchi). I said are they really gonna fine you? That's crazy. He quoted some crap about the 360 and DVDs and their street dates and what not. In the end I left empty handed. I'm done with it. That's the final straw. I'm just getting it on the release date. Going through all this stupidity and drivin around for this I know is gonna seem pretty retarded when I think about it next week. And getting people at Target in trouble is totally not worth it... What the hell has gotten into us? Impatient S.O.Bs!!! I mean it's 4 days from now... big freakin' deal... I'm gonna just wait for the official release... So, does anyone know if Walmart is have a midnight release? I'll see if I can borrow an employee discount card and score 10% off. HEHE

on my lunch break, i dropped by to pick up this week's new DS games. big brain academy was in a cardboard standee thing. magnetica was on the shelf. cars was sitting in the glass case behind the register. when i saw it, i looked up a couple rows and they had 4 lites. when the girl came out, i handed her my two games and she said "will there be anything else?" i asked her for a copy of cars as well. when she opened the case, i said "oh, and how much is the nintendo ds lite up there?" thinking that she'd scan it and it wouldn't allow the sale. as she brought it down she said "i actually don't know. we just got them in this morning and i put them on the shelf not even an hour ago." she scanned it... "$129.99." i said "i'll take one of those too." she rang it all up... asked me if i wanted the buyer protection plan (i declined)... bagged it all for me and wished me a nice day.
walked out of the store with 3 new games and my lite... no tricks, no codes... just asked for it. lovely.

Man, Coconut, that sucks. I thought they were fine selling it... not that the employees that did so seemed terribly knowledgable. (I don't mean to insult them, they just didn't seem like electronics "people")
I guess like others, I got really lucky.
I still don't believe they'll get fined though. It's probably something to scare them into keeping these absurd arbitrary release dates.
I do hope the employees don't get into trouble, they seemed like really nice people, not like the regular tools you find working retail. I would even write a letter on their behalf if I found out something bad happened. Although in all fairness, I did explain clearly to the operator that Williamsburg Target wouldn't sell one to me, the date was quoted to me as the 6th by them, and then the 11th, and so on and so forth and they still said "okay". I don't think I "tricked" anybody into selling anything, even though I did give them the number to look it up.

Went to a different Target to acquire a DS for my brother. I asked an Asian lady to look up the DCPI... She came back with 2 other people, and started saying "You very smart... You try to trick me" etc. They told me it was impossible that any other Target had sold one, and continued talking about how I tried to trick them. :bomb:

Heh... it wasn't worth the time. They wanted me to tell them which location had sold them (which btw, is located earlier in the thread if anybody is interested :D) so I just left at that point.
I must say it's the first time any employee has even tried to shame me, though. ;)

YES DICE! ;)
Target didn't do serial numbers on the Lites. I was surprised by this as well and even commented way back in this thread that people could buy now and return their EB copy later if they wanted to use credit. Others have confirmed the lack of serial number on their receipts as well.
Won't EB do serial numbers on the lite? The warranty for the DS does "registration at point of sale" for the unit, so if you have the receipt for your EB DSL and it's serial doesn't match the Target one, will Nintendo honor the warranty if something goes wrong?
And what is Target's return policy for open DSLs?

HEHE
Did you not read any of my posts beforehand? Go early in the morning when the less knowledgable employees work. I tried during the day and got shut down at two Targets before going in the morning. You will also find a boatload of employees with the hand scanners in the morning.

Yeah, now I *really* don't know what to do. I get out of work at noon and could easily get to a Toys R Us... but it's 30 minutes away. So potentially an hour long drive for nothing, but potentially a DS Lite to play the games I have sitting useless by my computer 4 days early. :-k
If someone else can contribute a confirm / deny that Toys R Us does indeed have in its shipments and doesn't care about the street date, that would really help my decision making process. ;)

Man, if it's too far for you, just stay home until Sunday. It's a crap shoot, and you have to expect failure when you go in or else you'll drive yourself crazy.
I'm quite sure that Toys R Us stores everywhere won't be collectively breaking street. Once again, if you find an employee who doesn't know better and can perhaps override any internal mechanism that prevents sale, then you're in. But in most cases this just isn't going to happen.

I had pretty much given up on getting a DS lite before the street date but decided to try the Target in Riverhead, NY (Long Island) last night at around 8PM since I was in the area. Much to my surprise, there was 20+ DS lites sitting there in the case! I quickly called the closest person over to open the case and grabbed them. The kid rung me up no problem and I walked off....
No item number trick, nothing...
So anyone who is still looking to get one a few days early and is on Long Island, head over to the Target in Riverhead.

Yeah, I know. I don't have my heart set on it or anything, and already resigned myself to waiting until Sunday. It's just that I really don't have anything else compelling to do today - need to figure out whether I'll miss the wasted hour (and gas money) if I come up empty handed.

I gave up last week after going to four stores and came up with nothing (I'm telling you, around by me, no one EVER breaks street on anything). I have two preorders in at EB Games, so I can simply walk in on Sunday and get it with little hassle (who knows if stock will be low a la the big Xbox 360 shortages).
In the meantime, I got my fix last night by playing New Super Mario on a demo machine at EB Games. It's a nice unit. Screen is really bright and the colors are really vibrant.
Four days left. Then it'll all be over and you'll be wondering what the fuss was ever about.

Might be harder to not kill the deal at TRU - at Target there are so many people that I was able to call and no one had raised the alarm 90 mins later when I actually got there. At TRU I don't think too many people can answer the question - it'd suck if they randomly asked a manager about the weird guy who called.

Calling ahead seems a sure way to kill whatever chance there would be. Four days left. Then it'll all be over and you'll be wondering what the fuss was ever about.Yeah, but it'll be the middle of a weekend I have to work during, and then I'm going out of town Tuesday for 5 days to a place I won't be able to take the DS with me. So there's a little incentive to try to get some time in with it early, if I can.

Agreed Ravenlock, which is why I tried to get one last week (I was on a trip this last weekend, so it would've been nice to have it). I also think it's absurd for Nintendo to release this stuff on Sunday, since a lot of us work Monday through Friday, so we won't get to use it much once we get it.

Hate to break it, but school's out, and Nintendo's (outside this board and most online forums) "base" isn't us 18-30 (taking a stab at it) year olds, it's the 8-12 year olds who are now out of school and have more time than ever to play all day. I think that's who they're targeting with a Sunday release in the middle of summer.

ATTENTION ILLINOIS CAGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have finally accuired a DS lite thanks to Snoods trick i believe (i forgot who first posted it)
heres my story:
i went into the target in Schaumburg IL (on higgins rd at 6:30pm) and went straight to the electronics department. i noticed that there were no DSs on display and i thought this would work to my advantage. Unfortunatly the clerk was savy (he had a mo hawk) and knew exactly what i was looking for. he told me it doesnt come out till the 11th.
So naturally i was pissed. i walked to another department (drapes or comforters) and asked some old guy to look up the DS with that DPCI # and he said we may have one. he walked me back to electronics and i thought i was doomed. he grabbed a key from the same guy that denied me and went in back and grabbed me a DS lite. i asked the old guy if i could pay at the front register (to avoid the electronics guy) but he told me i had to pay in that department.
i got rung up and the electronics guy told me that he "thought it came out the 11th" AND THE OLD GUY TOLD HIM TO PUT THE REST OF THE DS LITES ON THE FLOOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE ARE 3 LEFT SO HURRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was sweating bullets through out this whole ordeal but here i am now waiting for my DS lite to finish charging so i can kick some ass in tetris.

i went into the target in Schaumburg IL (on higgins rd at 6:30pm) and went straight to the electronics department. i noticed that there were no DSs on display and i thought this would work to my advantage.
THANKS TO ALL!!!
ps anyone know how long it takes for the ds to charge for the first time???It takes like 4 hours to charge and maybey ill use the same manuever to get my ds.I swear i looked within a five mile radius of all the game and electronics store and nobody would sell them now!(about 25 stores) it sucks. big time.well ive got one reserved in blockbuster so maybey my luck will change on the 11th. I just hope i dont have the same ordeal like on dec 18(xbox 360).

Thanks so much for the tip, i picked one up today, there are still a shitload left if you dont mind the drive to riverhead.

For any Cincinnati Cag's....I just picked one up at the Meijer on Marburg near Ridge road. It's the one in the same area as the Target and Sam's Club. I just walked in and bought it no problem. They had two left in the case if anyone is interested and they are open 24 hours. I did stop at Target first and there were none in the case.

grrrr i went to my local walmart and they had a nice brand new ds lite on dislay to play with i asked the guy if he had any of them and he denied it even though the one on display proves that they got their shipment of lites.... the guy was on to me though he instantly denied it wen i asked him i think he knew wat was going on he said that someone else asked him the exact same thing hmmmm i wonder if he reads this site... oh well looks like im waiting for sunday also i already got me a pre-order on it too :D
you do realize that the DS Lite displays at retailers are property of Nintendo right? our DS Lite display at TRU was installed early last week and we did not have any DS Lites in. our 360 was setup before the system came out...and so on.
I love how this street date break has brought out all the newbs and lurkers.
I suck. But I swear everyone should have to work a year in retail. Yes.

Well to be honest I certainly don't fall into either one of those yet I could of gotten a DS Lite a week ago yet I passed. Why? Because I can wait a bit, get my giftcard from CC on my DS, and use that giftcard towards a DS Lite. No biggie to wait a few weeks.

That is 110% right. I've been in retail for six years now (four of them with CC). You would think I would learn to quit, right. ;)

I'm going on almost 2 years, I still haven't learned :)
I guess I get annoyed by people on this board who post "stupid employee" stories, when they don't know how things work at a said retail place. I'm not saying though, that stupid employees don't exist :).

The sad thing is that even if you explain to some of these said people SLOWLY they still will have that misconception. I guess it is sometimes easier to believe in your own theory than what the truth is. Oh well whatever makes them sleep easy at night. ;)

alright, i've got a new one for you guys...
i picked up a lite this afternoon at toys r us.
on my lunch break, i dropped by to pick up this week's new DS games. big brain academy was in a cardboard standee thing. magnetica was on the shelf. cars was sitting in the glass case behind the register. when i saw it, i looked up a couple rows and they had 4 lites. when the girl came out, i handed her my two games and she said "will there be anything else?" i asked her for a copy of cars as well. when she opened the case, i said "oh, and how much is the nintendo ds lite up there?" thinking that she'd scan it and it wouldn't allow the sale. as she brought it down she said "i actually don't know. we just got them in this morning and i put them on the shelf not even an hour ago." she scanned it... "$129.99." i said "i'll take one of those too." she rang it all up... asked me if i wanted the buyer protection plan (i declined)... bagged it all for me and wished me a nice day.
walked out of the store with 3 new games and my lite... no tricks, no codes... just asked for it. lovely.
I went to TRU today and couldn't find a "glass case behind the register". I didn't see anything anywhere around the register that had electronics or games in it at all. I asked some guy who was walking around the store with a walkie talkie about the DS lite and he gave me a very gruff "Come back on this Sunday, we can't sell them."
Meh. I'm so unlucky with this stuff.

I'm not sure about your Toys R Us, but at mine there is a huge glass display case behind the register in the Games section. If you were looking around the registers at the front of the store you were in the wrong place.
Still trying to find one around Norfolk/Newport News in time for my plane ride on Saturday....sigh!...

I've checked every concievable location in the Hampton Roads area dude. This area is locked down tighter than a bull's ass on fight night. I even checked my old standby out of the way KB Toys off Military Highway. A quick look in there shows how backassward their video game section has become. Its not even worth calling now. I wonder if they even get video game shipments anymore?? Let me know if you find anything on the Peninsula. That's about as far as I am willing to go. As you might remember from my earlier post, Target Greatland in Yoder Plaza is on lockdown. Does anyone know if EB or Gamestop or even Walmart is having a Midnight launch thing for the DS Lite on Saturday???

Indeed. I've done about a year total in retail between Wolf Camera and Waldenbooks (both stores shut down soon after I left...victory!) and it certainly gives you perspective. It should be mandatory, like serving in the army in Israel. ;)
Incidentally, I also served a year with AmeriCorps, which makes retail look like working at Pixar.
Thankfully, all of that was a long time ago and I'm now in the world of guaranteed salary, paid vacation, and cushy health benefits. Yay! ;)

No problem Vin. I'm glad they still had them out. I would have felt bad if you drove all the way there and they had taken them off the shelf. I happen to live locally, so it wasn't such a drive. Where did you come from?

Target in Riverhead has around 20 units in the case for sale. I bought two, Vin bought another... so they are still there..... go get em...

DEFINITELY! Retail and Fast Food should be mandatory because once you experience life from the other side of the counter your whole perspective towards people changes.
These "lowly" retail or foodshack workers aren't necessarily "idiots". They'll do what they can to help a customer, but for $6.75/hr then there's a limit to how much crap you'd put up with from some rude mom or smartass kid.

Nintendo wont do shit about them selling early. I used to work for Coca-Cola USA and the Walmarts owned us and everything we did. Even tho we had shelf space, they would limit us to what THEY wanted. We kissed Walmarts ass so much, just to get shelf space and displays. So anyone that thinks Nintendo will/can do anything about Walmart or Target slipping some out early are so wrong.

try not to hit targets that say "greatland" in the logo apparently they may/maynot have 2 store rooms hence the reason that I and that other guy got fucked and dragged to electronics.
regular targets FTW remember.peace.
cred for this tip goes to:psincubus.
One guy on here actually got a Lite at the Newport News, Virginia Target Greatland. They actually keep the units in a drawer under the digital camera display. If you can find a clueless employee with a key, you're golden. So I wouldn't count them out either.

Only three more days for those of us deciding to wait...
On a side note - do people recommend ordering the wrist strap with thumb pad from Nintendo's web site? I'm a PC FPS shooter fan, so while Metroid Prime - Hunters seems ok to play with the stylus for "mouse looking" (I tried the demo in Best Buy), it seems the thumb pad would work better.

Personally, I recommend skipping MPH because its an overhyped carpal tunnel inducing bore. But as for "stylus vs thumb strap", the stylus definitely is better.
It does piss me off that the DS Lite doesnt come with a wrist strap of any kind while the white JPN version came with a matching white strap. The only reason I could figure for this is that the plastic parts on the strap will scratch up the glossy shell. What a ripoff.

Thumb pad works much better, I'm a PC FPS fan too and tried Metroid in my friend's DS, play with thumb pad is an amazing experience for FPS fans. I heard somewhere that the wrist strap is like scratching the surface of the DS Lite's case, I don't know if Nintendo is developing one with another material...

I'm a first-time poster on these forums, though I've been reading them for a while. I just wanted to thank UndyingForce for this tip; I drove out to this Target after work and was able to pick up a DS Lite (my first DS) along with a couple of games. Mohawk Man was totally cool about handing one over (from the back room, not from the glass case), and he even asked where I had heard that they had them, noting that they had only sold one today. I played it safe and just mentioned that I heard it over the Internets.
Anyhoo, thanks again, and I hope that everyone has as much luck as me! I was pretty pessimistic about actually getting one, but lady luck was certainly with me!

Its just plastic on the strap, but when dealing with those glossy plastics then you dont want anything hard scraping on it when its on your pocket so maybe they learned something with the JPN model. And yes, the japanese lite strap has no thumb pad but it does have the big plastic thing at the front of the strap still. I have an imported blue DS Lite and that part does touch a little of the shell still.
But since I dont care about scratches I'd like a real response from Nintendo as to why they decided americans don't need that strap. (nintendo only sells the black strap so you can't even get the white one for the US)

Took my DS Lite into an EB Games to use the download station. One of the guys working there had a laugh because Sears "won't get anymore shipments of DS Lites" for breaking the street date. Somehow Nintendo has to identify the particular stores in the chain and make sure those stores don't get more product to sell... Of course they have to do this for all the Targets and Wal-marts out there as well... Sounds like an easy and worthwhile thing for Nintendo to spend their time on.

So Nintendo would rather withhold sales from a store instead of selling their product? Not arguing with what he said, just doesn't sound like a good business model.
If a store is selling DS Lites early, it would lead me to believe there is some opportunity for sales at this location. And why you don't then follow up with any shipments, and thus sales of your product, doesn't make sense. Whether you're penalizing that store or not, you're only losing your own future profits, too.
Unless they're so arrogant they say, "Well, Shaq-Fu this Sears, send their 20 units to the EB Games down the street instead." I guess that's possibly the point.

People are driving MILES and MILES to get this dang thing early -- you think one store being sold out will kill the sale? I don't think Nintendo is worried about demand - otherwise they wouldn't be planning to make 2 million per month:

I don't know the truth about store penalties, but I think it's completely plausible they may punish some retail locations.
