djago: What part of Philly are you in? I am in the Northeast, and have been checking some stores the past two days. I tried the NE Philly Target, had a lady check to see if it was in stock, but she said we had none (based on her face and the fact that she didn't even bother to ask me what it was or if I needed any additional help, she was probably informed to watch out for this stuff... so that store has been crossed off the list).
I also tried the Neshaminy Target, but got pulled to the Electronics section for help. The guy there gave me the street date deal, and as I was walking out, him and some other people conversed about it. So, I think that store is pretty well guarded as well. Seems like the whole Northeast US isn't a good place to get a Lite early.
As for ordering from CC online for in-store pickup, all of the stores around here show out of stock (this was during the time it supposedly worked yesterday). The Wal-Marts have nothing, and Sam's Club is holding tight to the release date as well. The funny thing is, for every place I have been to, there are no DS Lite displays (demo units or signs). I guess they are waiting till the very last minute in an attempt to sell the original DS's they still have.
So, I guess it's time to give up. Let me know if you have luck anywhere.

Same here, and I was wondering if that was the case. I mean, there are obviously quite a few DS Phats out there, and unless they get a price drop, they aren't gonna be too attractive to buyers after Sunday.
I wonder if there have been any memos regarding this within the major retail chains? That would be interesting to read.
The thing I wonder about is advertising. I've read a little bit about a new campaign for the Lite, but has it broken yet? I've seen nothing, but I haven't watched much TV lately.
Any TV or print ads out there yet?
It seems like they are holding off on any big marketing pushes until they get more out to stores, maybe.
Sorry... rambling.

Like I said before, we here in the Northeast of the USA are more or less not going to see the Lite early. A few people are lucky (like the Long Island people who found a Target willing to sell), but that's the only case I've heard of. They're strict about street date here.
It's 2.5 days until official release now. While it sucks for those who will be traveling or working on Sunday, it just isn't so far away anymore that I'm willing to go nuts trying to convince a store to sell me one.
But I have seen and used a demo unit in quite a few stores, including Wal-Mart, EB Games, and Software Etc.

Is there something specific about the Northeast in general and New England specifically that keeps us from cashing in like other parts of the country?

That's Total BULLSHIT!
In fact, Give me the number to that EB Games so I can call him up and tell him how full of shit he is....or is that you?
What's so "BULLSHIT" about what I wrote? I just reported my experience and speculated on the likeliness of Nintendo being able or willing to follow through with what was claimed.

I've seen a number of TV ads for it. The New Super Mario Bros ad uses the DS Lite in it and I think I saw another ad specifically for the system. Both ads say June 11th at the end of them.

According to the CC website, numerous stores in the San Francisco East Bay Area have the DS Lite in stock: Hayward, Concord, Emeryville, Sunnyvale, Pittsburg. I picked mine up in Dublin today on my lunch break. Good stuff.
Edit: Not that it really matters that much anymore, considering the damn thing comes out in 3 days.

Took my DS Lite into an EB Games to use the download station. One of the guys working there had a laugh because Sears "won't get anymore shipments of DS Lites" for breaking the street date. Somehow Nintendo has to identify the particular stores in the chain and make sure those stores don't get more product to sell... Of course they have to do this for all the Targets and Wal-marts out there as well... Sounds like an easy and worthwhile thing for Nintendo to spend their time on.
Anybody else notice that the guys spouting off about Nintendo bringing the hammer down on a big box retailer are always GameStop or EB employees? Does this surprise anyone? It's a given in these stores that the guys behind the counter are going to be talking out of their ass. To them, speculation and assumption is just as valid as truth. Take anything they say with an ocean of salt.

The guy at my Gamestop made it sound like it was Target's corporate offices that allowed the early release of the system rather than a few confused employees. I think they're just bitter that they're losing out on some sales by sticking to the release date.

Yeah, kinda looks wierd that I have to wait till the 11th while others get their DS's.
Gameshop should hook us up with a freebie for making us wait (we could of just cancelled our pre-order and took our money elsewhere :D )

went next door to gamestop and saw a line up of ppl. looks like they got their dslites early and were selling em. but apparently no. they were just busy. no lites till sunday there.

Also, since it sounds like you work there, do you have any idea about how many units you will be receiving? Since I've given up on finding a Lite early, I am now planning for what to do to get one. I can either order online and hope for it to be shipped on the 11th, or try to go to CC or BB on Sunday to snatch one. I'd just hate to come back empty handed yet again, especially after they are officially released.

They will be getting them over the next few days. This is namely to advoid any potential early selling of the units.

I spoke with a manager at the Best Buy here in State College, PA. I was asking if there might be a way to pre-order the DS Lite. No dice. He did say they have around 20 in the back ready to go on the shelves for when the store opens at 11am on Sunday. He added that they might get more on the truck tomorrow (Friday).
Eew, only 20? At least Target and WalMart (at least the North Atherton location) hasn't put any out on the shelves yet. Not sure about Circuit City, though.
I wonder if WalMart will put their stock out at Midnight, Sunday.
Actually, after looking at opening times for the various stores here, this could really work out:
Walmart: 24 hours
Circuit City: 10am
Best Buy: 11am
Target: Noon
Not sure what time EB Games opens. I assume around Noon.

djago: Thanks for your help. I'm kind of debating when to go. I may go tomorrow morning to see if someone put them out on the shelf, and maybe to try getting someone to grab one for me. But, I also don't want to try my luck and have word get out (if the night people didn't have any signs or memos, I'd hate for an early morning failure to tip them off).
So, I could wait until tomorrow night, but it could also be a waste of time since it could be a whole new set of workers. Plus, the store is a bit far for just a casual trip. Ah, whatever, I'll give it a shot. I'd really like the DS for a car trip on Saturday... but, more importantly, I just want to get so that all my previous work was not in vain :D

It always takes me off guard when I go home to PA and things don't open until 11 or later on weekends.

I ordered mine online through Sears last week. The first email confirmation I got was that it would be ready to pickup on the 7th. I was like "Sweet!" The 7th comes and before I make it out there I get another email saying they pushed it back, and it will now be ready to pick up on the 9th (today). I was a little bummed, but I still figured, hey the 9th is only a couple days away, still early, no biggie. The guys at Sears also called me that night to tell me that it would be ready to pick up on the 9th. I said thanks for letting me know and went about my biz. Well, yesterday I get ANOTHER email saying that it won't be ready to pick up until the 14th now. I was pissed. The 14th?! That's crazy when I can go anywhere else and pick one up Sunday. I waited for them to call me and confirm so I could bitch them out, but they never called. So I figured today I'd print out the email confirmation that said to pick up on the 9th, and went out to Sears to see if I could still get it and if not, flip shit. The merchandise pickup machine said that it would be available the 7th! I called for help and showed the guy the email that said the 9th and the machine saying the 7th. He said he'll check on it and be right back. I'm figuring this is a 50/50 now. They surely have them in the back if they called to let me know I could pick it up today. After waiting for 15-20 minutes this other guy comes out and tells me that it won't be in until the 14th. I said that's unacceptable. I had ordered it a week ago, and they already pushed the date back once and that they actually called me Wednesday to confirm pickup today. He gave me attitude like I was making that up. "Really, who called you?" he asked. That pissed me off. How the fuck should I know who called me? I told him it was somebody at this store that called me. I whipped out my phone and showed him the call history so I could prove it and give the little prick the exact time. He says dismissively, "Well sorry, they didn't know what they were talking about." I said that's bs and I wanted to cancel my order. They put the credit back on my card and I walked the hell out of that place for good. In all honesty, even if they had said to pick up on the 11th, I still would have cancelled the order. There was absolutely no call for acting like that. Don't know what they're talking about indeed. Get your shit straight before you call a guy. Effen prick.

well I can't recommend a time but I can attest the general mood I got was that of absolute ignorence. no one knew anything so I would say go for it just stay calm and don't let them take the conversation to anything but your objective.peace
Man, I got so close there this morning. Found a lady in the back close to the stock room (next to electronics). Gave her my present story, told her the inventory number, and she looked it up and confirmed it was a DS Lite (maybe they changed this... I remember others saying that it simply rang up as a DS at Target). Then, she was walking to the stock room to get it for me... as she walked, she kept reading the screen on her gun. Halfway there, she stops...
"Ohhhhh.... the date on this says the 11th, we can't sell it yet." Sure enough, she shows me the screen, and it has "061106" under "Start." Damn.
Since it's already Friday and this was my last attempt, I tried to salvage it by telling her a friend came in yesterday and got it no problem. She was a little more intrigued then, but rather than going along and helping a poor soul like me out, she called her manager (damn... OVER :bomb:). The manager, of course, said we couldn't sell them because of fines blah blah blah.
Oh well. I really wanted it for my trip tomorrow, but I guess it was at least fun (and frustrating) trying. It sounds like this story is going to be on high alert for the next day and a half now... maybe they'll finally put some signs on the boxes ;)
On the upside, I finally got to see a DS Lite demo unit. Pretty snazzy looking.

Denied again today.
Tried Target this morning-- gave an older woman in the video section with the scan gun the stock number, and she looked it up no problem. Then she wrote on a piece of paper 2 series of numbers and said that they had them in two different locations in the stock room, and that I should go give the paper to another guy standing over by the phones and he would grab one for me.
So after I thanked her and asked her her name I walked over to the section she told me to and found the guy she was talking about and explain that I was told that he could get the item for me. He nods and says "ok" and disappears into the storeroom.
I bided my time looking at cellphone earpieces on the racks, and then a few minutes later he comes back and says he can't get one for me, blah, blah, blah...street date of the 11th...blah, blah, blah....
I told him I thought they were already selling them, and he calls his manager over who was clueless ("I don't work in electronics" she said), who then tells him to call the store that had already broken the street date to see if the go-ahead had been given to sell them.
He tries to call Newport News for about 15 minutes but can't get through for some reason, so he calls another store (Chesapeake I think) who said nope, street date still on, so he wouldn't sell me one.
F it.
I got a GB Micro cheap to play on my trip out Saturday night, and I'll just pick up a Lite Sunday somewhere on the other coast.
Dunno if I'll keep the micro or not afterwards.

It doesn't hurt to call, but this is Target, not EB or Best Buy. I'm highly doubt they'd open a huge discount center to sell off 20 DS Lites. However, in my neck of the woods, Targets open by 8 or 9 AM depending on the store, so I consider that pretty early on a Sunday. I'll be at mine around 7:45 AM.

The two Gamestops I visited earlier today were not selling them. One said tomorrow and the other has sold out their first shipment so they didn't know when you'd be able to walk in and pick one up.
Anyone tried calling any Wal*Marts in their area? I was planning on swinging by one tonight after hitting the bars, but the one nearest said they hadn't received them and the other said "October" and are obviously confused. Some of the game stores just don't get many in the initial shipment. Just hit up a Target/Wal-mart/Best Buy/Circuit City etc at open tomorrow morning and you'll get one. If you're unlucky you might have to go to a couple stores.
Everyone that wants one should be able to get one tomorrow. If you wait a day or two longer, then it might be tougher for a couple weeks.

Same here, have a target about a mile away that opens at 8. If I strike out there, I'll hit up the circuit cityaround the block at 10 when it opens.
I'd just do CC to get the freebies, but the local CC is pretty bad about not having game related stuff on release day. i.e. didn't have NSMB on release day when the ad said they'd have it after 5 pm that day. So I try to avoid them, as my first option anyway.

I checked with one of the two Super Walmarts we have and the girl working in Electronics had absolutely zero clue as to what I was talking about.
Walmart Sales Associate: Nintendo DS is over there.
Me: No, The DS Lite. Will you have it on the shelves after midnight.
Walmart Sales Associate: The only Nintendo stuff we have is already on the shelves. We don't get anything new until Tuesdays but our vendors were here last week and they don't say nuthin' to us about no DS Lite.
Me: Uh, thanks.
Walmart Sales Associate: Glad I could be of help!
Me: grumble, grumble.
I'll go after midnight and see what happens. Otherwise, tomorrow morning I'll be going to Circuit City first, then Best Buy (reward zone card) and then Target.

It won't be widespread, but in certain areas this will be impossible to find. By July it won't be hard at all. If you want one for sure, go out TOMORROW. Don't wait till Monday or Tuesday as most stores will be sold out. Be sure to TEST IT as soon as you buy it incase of dead pixels. Because if you want to return it...it may be a while.

Been reading the boards for the past week and got caught up in the hype. Just came back from the 24hr Walmart in Casselberry, FL (Orlando area) with a DS Lite. They wouldn't sell until the stroke of midnight and even then they couldn't get the "no-sale" thing off the register...so everyone had to wait around another 7 minutes. They seemed to have 30 or so, and the line of ~10 people snapped up the a third of that. Good luck to everyone who's getting one in the morning!

Just got myself a lite at the 24hrs Walmart Store in Kendall, Miami, FL. They have about 20 more lites in stock, so get 'em while you can! Around 8 of them got sold when i was there, so i presume early tomorrow morning, the rest of them are going to get sold too! Might take them another week or so to get the next batch so set your alarm clocks fella's!!!

No-go at my Walmart. What a bunch of dumba**es. It wasn't even a stocker I was talking to, but an electronics guy with the lanyard and everything.
"Hey, you guys got any DSLs for sale?"
"Nope, we haven't received any yet."
"Are you sure, because earlier this week the guy brought out a DSL, rang it up, but then told me he couldn't sell it until the 11th."
"Welp, they're not on the shelves, so we aren't selling them."
"Can you check the back."
"Already did."
Seriously, what an a**hole. I guess I'll have to talk my mom outta making me go to church in the morning, as the DSL is definintely of higher priority. Jeez.

Got to one of the two Super Walmarts here in State College PA at around 11:50pm. Shortly afterward, there were four more along with a Dad and his three kids. The woman working in Electronics was very nice to all of us and at midnight, went to the back and brought out a box which had (rough count) 30 units. The dad bought one for each kid and himself.
Got mine home and am now charging it completely befoe playing. I'll check for dead pixels before the other stores open in the morning.
I should have picked up Brain Age and the New Super Mario Brothers but figured I can do that tomorrow.
I am impressed with how much smaller and lighter it is than the DS Original/Phat/Fatty. The casing is very similar to the Apple iBook. White is nice but blue will be better.
I hope everyone gets one and doesn't encounter any issuses!

Info for Twin Cities CAGs:
I went to the Bloomington ghetto WalMart shortly after midnight and was told that they had sold their last DS Lite about 40 minutes before I got there. Those tards apparently put them up for sale yesterday, despite telling me a week ago that they "woudn't go on sale until the 11th".
So, I drove to the Shakopee WalMart, guy said they got 11 in, I bought one, and there were 3 left when I left around 1AM. That was 2 hours ago, so those might be gone now.
I don't know if we have any other 24 hr WalMarts around here or not. Hudson, Menomonie, and Eau Claire all have them, however.
Anyway, there's little point now, as Targets open in 5 hours and Targets in the Twin Cities are as common as Tim Hortons in Canada.
(For the record, mine had no dead pixels -- woohoo!)

After going back and fourth he decided to go in the back and check. He came back with a box full of DS lites.

Picked mine up at Target this morning. They didn't have it on the shelf yet so there was some radio traffic about it but eventually someone came from the back with two cases of DS Lites. I'd imagine that was a fairly standard allotment--two cases, 6-8 per case (couldn't tell the exact number).

Those extended warranties thing are a real ripoff. It's basically a way for BB to make free money for the company. As such, they force employees to sell them at the cost of their jobs (they'll tell you they don't work on commission, which is true, but if they don't sell enough of those extended warranties, they'll get the axe), so they'll say just about anything to get you to buy them.
Good luck to you if you ever have to actually use the warranty as BB will do everything in their power to put the blame on you thereby clearing them of actually having to honoring it.
There are very few cases where you really need to buy the extended warranty (mostly Sony products) but Nintendo tends to have really good quality control. I seriously doubt BB will honor a scratched unit. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to make a sale (maybe losing his job soon?). Back when BB used to sell PDA's they used to advertise the extended warranty as a free upgrade policy to easy get a new, more current model whenever you wanted for the life of the warranty - that didn't last too long.
So yeah, avoid those extended warranties unless you don't mind fighting with managers when you actually need to use it.

Normally I would agree with whoever says "Extended Warranties are a rip-off" because they generally are (except, I guess, on some huge ticket items like plasma TVs). However, I must say that I have had no trouble whatsoever with Best Buy Product Replacement Plans.
I first got one about 4 years ago on my Creative Jukebox Zen because I wasn't into iPods and the rep told me that if anything happened to the product in 2 years I could just send it back and they would give me what I paid for it (minus the $40 cost for the PRP and in store credit, of course). She also said that I could sent it back, even if there wasn't anything wrong with it, to upgrade if I wanted. I was skeptical, but I was young and naive and it sounded like a good deal.
Cut to 2 years later and I decided it was time for me to jump on the iPod bandwagon. The Zen wasn't broken, but the battery life had dwindled somewhat and I sent it back to Best Buy. Sure enough, a few weeks later a slip with $300+ in store credit came in the mail. With this money I bought an iPod and the PRP again.
To make a long story longer, recently I decided to send this iPod back to best buy because the battery lasted about an hour on full charge. I sent it back to best buy and a few weeks later, nothing had come in the mail so I gave the company a call. They said they hadn't received the product even though I had sent it nearly a month before. So she said she would just mark the item as lost in the mail and would send the card with the store credit immediately. The following week I got the card with $300+ on it. I don't even know if they ever got the iPod.
Sorry this is so long, but I just wanted to share my experience with the Best Buy product replacement plan. Now, I think they actually have a different company handle the PRPs and maybe that's why you get such great service with them. The Best Buy Performance Service Plans (PSPs) are probably a different story.

So she said she would just mark the item as lost in the mail and would sent the store credit card immediately.
I say it's a good idea when buying something you want long term AND is expensive. I always check the company warrany before buying an in-store warranty. Both sony and nintendo have a 1 year warranty which is good enough IMHO.
Anyone who picks up a Lite with a dead pixel should give nintendo a call. A few minutes of your time will get you a replacement without a single dime. the only cost is your time wasted doing this.

The PRP's probably aren't too bad because you're dealing with a 3rd party, not Best But, but the PSP's are a different story. Unless this have changed since I last dealt with it, PSP'd items have to go through the computer repair people. If they can't reproduce the problem, or if they "detect" user inflicted damage, they deny the warranty.
When people complained about Tungsten T3's dim screens (which affected only some of the units) BB techs would turn it on and just say that since they can read what's on the screen, there's no need for replacement.
Personally I steer clear of Best Buy in general (I like them about as much as I like Wal-Mart), but next time I'm looking for something that can be covered with a PRP, I might check them out if they're really that easy to deal with. PSP's though, are another story for me =)
In the end though, if a sales person makes a claim you think is fishy (like the exchange for scratched unit) ask them to put it in writing. You'll need it when talking to management ;)

Anyone find on at Costco?
Had checked Costco.com for any DSLite info; no dice.
am planning a run down to my nearby Costco tomorrow, and will keep an eye out for it...

Stopped by my Costco and they don't even sell any videogames.
Went to Game Crazy and traded in some stuff and walked out with a free DS Lite. Bought the 1 year warranty so I can switch it out when a new color comes out.

Not even the <$20 XBox/PS2/GameCube games? they're usually stacked up next to the movies and CDs. sometimes the polypak bundles are even bunched up/stocked in the middle or nearby the clothes section...
And where's a Game Crazy in CA? Northern or Southern CA? Sounds like a great trade-in deal, even better with the 1 yr warranty!

I looked everywhere. They use to carry them (In tall Green/Purple cases). Not anymore I guess.
And yes, there are Game Crazys in SoCal. Infact they were part of the first 100 or so stores in 2002.

Having fun with Brain Age, and the free case from CC is pretty decent as well, so actually worked out well that I didn't find one last week when I just missed out on some at a couple local targets. Worth a weeks wait for $30 of decent freebies.
Super impressed with the lite, you see colors and details in games you never new were there before.

the sad part is after playing my DS all day and then goign to play my PSP, I felt the PSP was bulky and clunky... I use to think it the other way around. Maybe this will make Sony consider a system remake with a brighter screen, but before they do that they need to find a more powerful battery.
The other crazy part is that the new DS lite has more battery time than the standard DS. Almost double.

Yes, because they won't be losing enough money with the production cost of the PS3.

Has anyone tried returning an EB/GS preordered DS Lite to Target? I bought a Lite early from Target a bit over a week ago and just now got back from vacation. I'm heading out to EB to pick up my preordered Lite and then going to Target to see if they'll take it.

Wouldn't it be easier just to cancel your preorder?

Does that case actually have like, slots for all those games, or did you just put them in there to show off?

Nope, the case doesn't have pockets inside like the "DS fat's" Nintendo case. There is however, a zippered pocket on the outside that has mesh on the outside of the it, but some cloth inside keeps it from being see through. It can hold as many carts and you want it to, but starts to look ridiculous with all the ones I've got in the photo crammed in there. So, 4 at the most with one in the DS Lite seems reasonable enough to carry around.
As far as surrendering my DS Lite because I have Sprung? Tybee I think you're just jealous. If you want, you can borrow it from me. hehehe. honestly, I got it used last year at EB for $9.99 each along with Tiger Woods and Feel the Magic. I was curious about it. Its okay. not good enough to inspire a sequel, but okay.

I preordered entirely on store credit, meaning I didn't pay an actual cent, just credit from trade-ins. I bought the one from Target because I wanted it early and knew/thought I could return the Lite from EB for a refund, therefore still not paying any money for it aside from gas.
I'm leaving in a few minutes so we'll see what happens.

random check of zip codes on CircuitCity are showing out of stock around the bay area (specifically SF, Daly City, Hayward, South Bay)
I wonder if the real-time inventory check is off due to the Mario/Brain Game promo?

OMIGOD!!! after all these years, that awesome and elusive feeling that you got when you first played Yoshi's Island has returned when I played New Super Mario Bros on my DS Light. After years of searching, and replaying all the old super mario bros to get even a glimmer of that warm tingly nostalgic sensation. Well Done Miyamato and Company.

Do you think this'll work if I took the DSLite that I got from Circuit City and returned it to Target (I also picked up a DSLite earlier)? Don't they have dififerent serial #'s?

Same here but interestingly enough, they scanned the serial number when I returned it... They didn't scan it on purchase but did on return, that seems odd.

If you're going to return the one you got from EB/CC/wherever to Target, that also means that your serial won't match up at said store if you have a problem with your Lite and need to return it. I'm not sure how strict these storesare about the serial, but it is some food for thought.

Probably has something to do with it being officially released now. My receipt had no serial number, but this was pre-6/11.
