06/12/06 EDIT: okay so i moved my computer setup into another room Saturday. Saturday night the WAP was communicating with the bridge just fine and i was able to play xbl. Sunday the connection was down. Now i cannot get it going again.
I've done all the necessary rebooting. I can log into the WAP but it is not communicating with the bridge 25' away like it was Saturday night. The bridge communication light isn't blinking either.

I'm trying to put a wireless access point onto my existing LAN. The WAP I have is this. (http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WG602.php)
I'm pretty much a dumbass when it comes to wireless networks. The instructions say to open a browser and type in the ip addy of the wap. I did that but I get the page cannot be found message. I can access my router which the wap is on, but no wap. anybody got any ideas? i've done all the rebooting and shit like that. a basic walkthough would be nice as the included instructions suck ass.
So you have the WAP in one of your router ports and your computer in another?
AFAIK you'd only be able to hit the routers IP from your computer and won't be able to get to the WAP. I think you'll have to hook the WAP directly to your computer to be able to access its config page and change it's settings. Then you'd hopefully be able to unhook it from your PC and back to the router and it will work. (Maybe?)
Alternately you might be able to put your router in bridge mode and then hit the WAP to make your settings, but I may just be talking out my ass on that one. I'm not an expert on this sort of stuff.
Or maybe easier - most of those are wide open (no WEP or WPA enabled) by default as well, so if you have a laptop or whatever that can hook up to it's network you should be able to get to it's config page once the laptop establishes the connection.
To figure out the proper IP (in case you didn't know this) do an 'ipconfig' from a command prompt and it should be the Default Gateway.

I don't think so. You should be able to acess the WAP from the PC through the router. Normally, the WAP will just DHCP for an address from the router, then you can browse to that IP address from the PC to config the WAP.
Does it say that the WAP will have some specific IP address? Probably not, in which case you'll have to browse to the IP of the router (usually something like 192.168.1.1) and use the rotuer's web config to figure out what IP was assigned to the WAP. How did you know what the IP of thw WAP is???
As an aside, why didn't you just buy a WAP/router combo? I doubt that you saved that much money by buing a WAP, and combo units are much easier to configure.

i already had an existing wired router. the WAP was $25. Basically the Tivo and Xbox are going to sit on a switch which is connected to a wireless Bridge. The bridge and the WAP will connect to each other. i can manage the wap now and am working on connecting to the xbox through the bridge. should i just assign each component on the network (bridge, xbox and tivo) a separate ip address or keep trying the dhcp auto assign option?

You could have gotten a WAP/router for $39 (less if you shop around). And then you'd have the wired router to use for something else, or sell.
Anyhoo...I'd keep trying to use the DHCP server in the router to config everything. That should work. If you get stuck, you can try configuring the devices manually. Just make sure the IP's you use are in the same subnet, but don't conflict with the IPs the router is going to hand out.
You may need to hook your PC up to the bridge (wired) in order to do the initial configuration like setting the WPA/WEP key and such. You ARE turning on security on the WAP right?

You'll have to log into the bridge again and check the settings.
