Why is it that the first 20 minutes of Kingdom Hearts II has a loading screen every 10 seconds? Jesus, what were they thinking? Someone please tell me that this doesn't happen later in the game. I'm already disenchanted with the game and would rather not waste any more time watching more loading screens...
Sucks too. I really like Disney.

I don't really remember any loading screens, there were some pauses between cutscenes.. The Beginning is pretty slow. Get past the first few hours and it gets much better. One of my favorite games of the year.

Does it actually eliminate load times or something? If that's the case, then I very well may invest in that... and it'd be nice to have all of my games accessible from one place.

mm-hmm. Guitar Hero runs like a dream on it.
If I ever played Kingdom Hearts II from the disc, then I might understand DaPhatty's lament. Using HDLoader/HDAdvance makes my PS2 run as well as my Xbox, and somewhat better, in terms of loading times.

oh yes. HDLoader, the original that I have, decreases loading times between 2-3x. Its extremely noticeable if you switch between the two formats.

Give you an example: Notoriously long loading RE outbreak loading went from 16 seconds to 6secs!
Games with 3-5 second loading on disc will now be almost instant.

KH2 gets better after the looong (2 hour or so) intro. As you progress in the game the loading does get better, but it still does appear. It was kind of annoying at first to play for about 30 seconds and then either have to wait for a short cut scene to load or wait for instructions to kill all the enemies.

I don't remember any loading, do you mean the pause during which your character looks around at the enemies?

Does anybody have a preference between HDloader and HDadvance?

HDLoader makes me wish I didn't have a slim PS2.I was going to get this, should I invest in a fat PS2/FFXI and HDAdvance instead?

Hd advance is a copy of hdloader.
HDLoader makes me wish I didn't have a slim PS2.
There are options for slim ps2's also, it's called hd-combo. Alot more work is involved but it works fine.
The bad thing about kingdom hearts 2 is that the game freezes on the gummie ship parts, when you use hd advance/hd loader.

There's also USB Extreme (I confused this with HD Loader), which is what I've been thinking about getting:

Anybody have any experience with this or any places that compare a USB HD with the slim PS2 to a fat PS2 with internal HD?

another difference between the two is the hd loader can only use a hard drive up to 120 gigs while the hd advance can use up to a 200 gig hard drive. after owning both for some time i have noticed the hd advance has slightly better compatibility than the loader. as in a couple more titles work on the advance whereas they may not work on the loader.

here are the links to the two different discs on consolesource.com, so you can see for yourself the differences between the two.

I really didn't notice too many loading screens but there were definitely too many cut-scenes in that game.

Don't buy either HD Advance or HDLoader. The fully patched version of HDL is free, HD Advance is just a repackaged version of it sold by Hong Kong pirates. The compatibility level is much higher for HDL as well. I don't know if I can link this, but it really doesn't have anything to do with piracy, just how to set up HDL and install a hard drive in your PS2, its simple really. I had an extra hard drive, so I fired it up and most of my games that normally had 30 seconds to 1 minute load time were reduced to 10 seconds or less, sometimes instantaneously. Here is the site (mods please remove this part of the post if its not kosher):

I'm aware of this, but they admit that because of USB transfer speed, it does not decrease load times.

I am enjoying it for the most part, and I'm not too annoyed by the loading screens. The cutscenes every 5 minutes or so do get frustrating though. I mean, who wants a cutscene of the group walking 10 feet forward?!?

I didn't think Kingdom Hearts II load times were that bad but Suikoden V had AWFUL load times. The game is awsome, but the load times really turned me off at some points. They happen everywhere (even between some battles).

Go play killer7 for the ps2. Worst load times on something current gen. (That I know of) They rival those of Resident evil for ps1. Kingdom hearts loading screens are a pleasure after playing those two games. :)
Note: So no one gets it confused. I love both RE and killer7, just not the load times.

So does the USB eXtreme thing let you rip your games to a hard drive then or just help load times along? I'd be interested in something that lets me backup games considering laser issues are what caused my original PS2 to die.

usb extreme , is the worst one you can use between hdloader/advance & UBE. It has the worst compatiblity with games, and the load times are about the same as playing off the disk, where hd loader/advance speeds up the loading, and has a better compatiblity with more games.
