View Full Version : I knew it was a good idea to stick with 1.5

The newly released Devhook allows 1.5 users to emulate the 2.5 firmware on their PSP without updating the firmware. This means that 1.5 users can easily switch between 1.5 and 2.5 without updating and they have all the features of both firmwares. You can see it here:

http://pspupdates.qj.net/Newer-UMD-Games-and-Browser-come-to-1-50-PSP-s-/pg/49/aid/51671#comments

I am very happy. I was thinking of getting a second PSP to play newer games I have some apps on my 1.5 (such as a Wi-Fi sniffer, TI 92, and a remote control car driver) that I could not use on a 2.0+, so I was forced to stick with the 1.5. Now I have the best of both worlds and can buy some newer games. So what are some of the better games that require you to update to 2.5 or lower?

It was a program my friend and I made that allowed us to drive a remote control car over wifi using the PSP. There is a webcam hooked up to the car as well and you can see it on the PSP screen. Its pretty cool, though the range is not that good.

I'm suprised no one has said anything about 1.5 being only for emulators of old systems...

Definately a great breakthrough, seems a lot of the games that werent working before are working now. (though im not sure how many people were missing out on The Sims).

I had bought a 2nd PSP just for the reason of having the two firmwares, i may wait a bit before selling my 2nd one though.

I don't have a PSP and probably won't have one for a while, but I just want to know..

Am I the only one who would rather have a system that can play all official games and UMD's, as well as conventional media via memory sticks, instead of a modded system where it's a hassle to play a game just so you can run some emulator or demo some kid coded on his spring break?

I do want to ask though, is PSP truly region free? Could I actually order DJ MAX Pro and play it on a US system?

Yes, PSP is totally region free for games. There have been some reports that game saves are not (which makes sense, because if you ever look at your Gamesave folder on your PC, each game is coded by it's number - ULUS10001 for example - but that may be fixed by changing the folder name, but that's just a guess).

And I agree with you. Maybe if there were no good official games to play I might mod it (like my phone), but I'm very happy with what I have.

There are no games worth buying now for the most part. However, Loco Roco will require 2.7, and that game is excellent.

Right now I love the PSP. The current crop of games are wonderful

My favorites are Burnout and Mega Man games. I also greatly enjoy Katamari, Metal Gear, and Darkstalkers.

All of which (minus Katamari) have been playable for months on 1.5.

It also seems that the compatibility has gone through the roof, the only ISO's that arent working are WWE & Katamari (give it a few days).

Wasn't playing nice on my 2.0, so I went ahead and downgraded to 1.5 And this doesn't seem to be doing anything right. (Sure doesn't help that the help files are gibberish, at least on the two computers I use.) Am I supposed to put the 2.5 firmware in the folder marked 2.50? Or extract individual pieces of firmware somehow?

This all seems more complicated than it's worth. I've perused several sites' worth of files and forums and find no immediate answers.

While, I'm at it, will I need anything extra to get my Capcom Classics Collection Remix to work?

Ugh I can't even begin to express my disgust here. Does that mean I'm screwed in saving on ToE and BoF3? I thought most people were able to save from those. Now I'm worried about saving on my Japanese and Korean one's.
Yeah btw to the other poster unfortunately it's not Region Free for music even though I'd BUY a Crystal Kay UMD if it were cheaper as well as the Seo Taiji Region 3 UMD.

I smell idiot. Have you ever heard of an opinion? Just because he feels like there aren't enough great games to make the fireware upgrade worth it, doesn't mean he's a troll. If he was saying something like, "Man, the PSP sucks ass, all the games suck, DS 4 LiFe!!" Now, that would be trolling. He's just saying there aren't enough AAA games that make all the great classics, and homebrew programs on 1.5 worth giving up. So don't be so sensitive.

Personally, I did upgrade a three months ago, and I do regret it. I miss having all those classic NES & Gameboy games all on one memory stick, wherever I went. There haven't been any PSP games that I feel are super must owns worth giving up 1.5 for just yet. My favorite PSP games are the ones from launch; Untold Legends, and Wipeout Pure. Grand Theft Auto is the only game I feel is worth the upgrade.... Smackdown vs Raw woudl have been if it weren't for the extreme load times.

Um, he didn't say it was his opinion. He stated it as a statement of fact. Maybe I missed the part where he said it was his opinion?

I think your the one being sensitive. I was just correcting him by appending it was his opinion as I like the PSP and many of its games.

You can play NES and Gameboy on GBA full speed with a GBA flash cart. That is an alternative to consider. That's what I would do and plan on doing soon.

YEah....sure ;)

Why is that so hard to believe?

There's a number of people with PSPs that have no interest in piracy but would like to keep their PSPs at 1.5.

I looked into making ISOs of the games that I currently own but cannot play. Too much work for me, and I figure it's just a matter of time before I can play them somehow.

Talk about your ironic situations: Sony goes bonkers with the firmwares to prevent piracy, and I can't run my official product.

The thing is, they've broken a milestone by allowing 1.5 users to play original UMD's that require higher firmware. It's only a matter of time before they allow 2.7.

There of course are always 2 sides. I'm not suprised people would be suspicious of iso play since you can with this program. But there is so much wonderful homebrew only working on 1.5 that having to upgrade is sad. In reality Sony should stop cockblocking homebrew, though it seems when you can do homebrew you can pirate.

Yeah, I am probably going to buy a second PSP instead as I got my current PSP for free (from a Sony employee (long story)). I am holding off though as there were rumors about a new PSP2 or different color PSP's. If TGS comes and there is no sign of new PSP's, I will just buy a second one.

Sorry, I guess I left out the important part:

Game saves are region encoded by the game. If you have the same game of two different regions, the save won't translate. At least this was the way it worked previously.

Example: You go to Europe and play Lemmings, for example. You save your game, and when you get back to the States you decide to buy Lemmings here. The save you made in Europe won't work on the US game.

Hope that helps.

I broke down and bought another PSP (I HAVE to keep my emulators... the space I am saving in my gameroom by storing the older systems.... that and the ability to play hard to find games I had wanted for years but could never find)

Luckily I bought it off of a guy who was going to get screwed money wise by trading it into Rhino... picked up the system, case, car adaptor, all the hook ups, 32 mb card, Lord of War, POP, and GTA: LCS for 100 bucks, sold GTA to my friend for 15 since I had it... so 85 was a good deal

2 PSP's I purchase for less than one value pack... and I can keep my old games handy

Ok thanks for clearing that up, I thought I was screwed. Now if only Sony would get their head out of their ass and make UMD Music region free or have the next firmware negate the region coding for it.
Has ANYONE seen the C-Kay UMD around here for Region 1? I severely doubt it but I figure I'll ask since Sony are being assholes about it.

iirc, 1.5 lowers your battery life since the UMD spins when you are doing other things like playing emulators or listening to mp3s.

Im glad i upgraded to 2.6 since the psp has given me a lot of great gaming but this is certainly great news for those who dont want to lose their 1.5s
