Can I officially put out an APB for a Wii nunchuk? If you see one, grab it for me and I will buy you a drink or coffee (plus the price of the nunchuk, obviously) when I pick it up. I'm tired of running around looking for one.

I'll keep an eye out for yah, but I haven't seen a single one since release day.

Eeeeeasy, big spender.;)

Alright. I'll throw in some salsa too. But only the Kroger brand.

Seriously, though....I'd like to have a game night. It would be fun to meet everybody. Just a thought....

It might be better to wait until just after the New Year when WarioWare: Smooth Moves will be out. Wii Sports is enough fodder for a party all by itself, but it'll be nice to have some other options. Elebits will be out by then too, which has a four-player mode.

Then we can have another one when Wii Play and Mario Party 8 come out a month or so after that. ;)

Sounds good to me. If people are serious about it, we should start planning now. It's hard enough getting together with my friends that I have known for a while, much less getting a group of people who have never met (mostly, anyway) together.

Obviously, step 1 is finding the poor lucky person willing to host the shindig. I would be willing, but my 1-bedroom apartment would probably be an ill fit. However, I wouldn't merely pawn off this on someone. I'd be more than willing to take the lead and do my fair share in helping get it organized, etc...

If others are willing, let's put our collective heads together and come up with a plan. If most aren't interested, then that's cool too. I'll just take my ball and go home...;)

I'd volunteer my house, but I'm not sure how my wife would feel about that. Actually, I am sure, which is why I'm reluctant.

Sounds good to me. If people are serious about it, we should start planning now.Well... um... I'll have to think about this.

I'd love to have y'all over and the entertainment room is big enough for a bunch of folks to play together... the only problem is err... *cringes* what do y'all think about meeting my crazy Mum? Actually it's more like, "now Mom, I've invited some total strangers to come over and play games."

As I say, I'll have to think about this if no other venue is ideally suited for a Wii Party. But keep in mind the houes ground rules, no cussing, which is highlighted by no JCs or GDs or stuff like that. No smoking if you please, and no booze. I know that doesn't make for the party everyone is hoping for, but if nothing else pans out and if that's something everyone can deal with, I'll seriously see about how to get around the Mater issue.

EDIT: unrelated but I wanted to mention that the EB in Hiram has a used copy of Disagea in as of this afternoon and it was stickered for $39.99. I have no idea which print it is, or if that's a good price. But I know that's hard to come by and wanted to give a heads up if anyone is searching.

That's a very generous offer. If it's too much, then we can explore other options, or just even meet up for dinner and no gaming. Either way, it would be cool to meet everybody..

Thanks again. If that turns out to be the plan, I'm more than willing to help get things organized, planned, etc...:)

This is an FYI for Tybee on the Nunchuck front.

I couldn't sit still this evening so I went out to the Wally on Dallas Hwy. No nunchucks BUT there was a sign about them getting Wiis in tomorrow morning (the sign noted that the line for them would be in X department starting at 8am or so). Anyway, I asked about Nunchuck and they weren't sure but they're hoping for them, along with all other controllers.

So. It might be worth a stop at a local Walmart tomorrow morning before work. Or at the very least, a call to your local Wally.

Earlier this week someone mentioned Phoenix Wright for $19.99 at TRU. I hadn't seen them. Until this afternoon in Douglasville. They currently have four in stock for 19.99 each.

And just because I like talking in here, I have to vent.

We don't have Game Crazy in this state, only Hollywood Video. Fine, fine. I happened into the HV in Hiram the other day and figured I'd browse the used games for sale. Those marked 9.99 or less are actually 4/$20. Nice sale.

EXCEPT THAT THEY DONT COME WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK OR INSTRUCTIONS!!! Hollywood has these uuuuuuuugly print ups which they use on their rental games. It has a shrunk image of the original cover picture framed by blue or purple or green (depending on the console) and a lovely Hollywood Video logo image on the front, and basic controller fuctions on on the back.

ARGH!!!

I saw a couple Atlus titles that I'd like to pick up, a couple games on my Bro's lists and another game I can't find cheap anywhere... but I just can't do it. I can live without the instructions if I have to, but that horrible excuse for a cover sleeve?!

piffle.

I can live without the instructions if I have to, but that horrible excuse for a cover sleeve?!

If you have access to a good printer you could always print a replacement cover sleeve. There are a number of sites where you can download them, such as http://www.cdcovers.cc/covers.php

I have done that a few times with some of the cheap used DVDs that Moviestop sells in plain cases.

ooooooooh. That's a very useful link to have. Thank you. I might have to actually open the printer some year and see what sort of quality image I can print up.

Don't laugh but now the cheap @$$ voice in the back of my head is saying, "that'll eat up all your ink." http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/guinaevere/smilies/blush.gif

I just recently started hitting up CAG, which is right up my alley seeing as I'm a deal whore. Anybody in ATL seen a copy of advanced wars dual strike for 20 or less? I live more towards the Austell/Mableton area, so the closer to me the better.

I'd also be willing to buy a copy off someone if they're willing to meet me.

I'm additionaly looking for final fantasy 4 on GBA.

Anyone see any B&M deals on LCDs? Dad and I are looking to get one for the female parental unit and the cheapest we can find is a $129.99 HP refurb at Microcenter. We've shopped there for a long time and are pretty comftorble buying refurbs from them. We don't want to order online because of shipping.

Edit - We're looking for a 17".

I'm additionaly looking for final fantasy 4 on GBA.The EB I shop at here in Macon had a cart-only FF4 Advance in their used bag-o'-GB/C/A-games. Don't recall the price offhand, since I own the game (huge fan, I'm sure no one would have guessed, ever), but I can check it out sometime. They may still have the stackable discounts thing going on.

Macon is some distance away from Atlanta, though.

/edit/
Though honestly, I'm not sure you'll get away better at EB than Amazon's $19 for a new FF4A (http://www.amazon.com/Square-Enix-AGB-BZ4E-Fantasy/dp/B000BI3SIC/sr=8-1/qid=1165777125/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-3351059-6019868?ie=UTF8&s=videogames). IIRC, Amazon ships for free on orders of $25 or more, if you wanted to buy a book or something to nudge it up there.

Are you looking for it to be brand new? Craigslist has plenty of good deals on it. I recently saw a 22 inch dell go for 200. If your mom won't be using the thing too terribly often a lightly used lcd will last her for years.

I'd offer this one http://atlanta.craigslist.org/sys/246913302.html
100 dollars and see what they say. If you look for a few days you could probably find something for even below 100, but you'd have to look pretty hard. LCD's don't really drop below a 100.

I'm quoting again, just so to make it easy for me to reference...

I was just at my local BBGameRush (Ridge Road, Hiram) and they had Advance Wars Dual Strike Used for 14.99 and FFIV used for 19.99. Both had their boxes, though I didn't ask them to open to check for instructions. But with the current promotion of 25% off, those are not bad deals.

If you're interested, I could pick up for you and meet ya in a public place. Lemme know either way.

????? what promotion is that? All used (non next gen games) are 25% off.

I think I'll head up to hiram and pick up advanced wars tomorrow. Is that EB near the super target and all the other new stuff that popped up in Hiram?Well there is a nice EB by the Super Target in Hiram. But the games I saw were at the BlockBuster GameRush store on Ridge Road in Hiram. Not terribly far from that SuperTarget area... about er... 17 minutes with traffic.

Basically at the main four-way intersection (lets see there's an Eckerds, a Hollywood Video & Chic-fil-A, a closed down Publix and at the other corner a small used car lot...) go south on 92 till you hit a three-way intersection with a light... there's a junkyard on your left, and you want to turn right onto Ridge Road. Stay straight on Ridge past the ballpark on your right, till you hit a little shopping center on your right with Kroger and BlockBuster. That's your destination.

Just doing a search now, the address technically puts the store in Douglasville, but I'm about 101% positive its Hiram.

Also, I've never really thought to look, but I'm kind of considering buying a 360 so I can have it available to review games with, so is it a common thing for a Gamerush to carry new Xbox 360s?

I know there's a BB across from the strip mall with Barnes & Noble/Starbucks, Gamestop, thatusedCDstore and Cingular, a hop and a skip from Town Center. There's an ABC in the same strip mall as BB.

While it's "in Kennesaw" the Postal Service claims that area is in Marietta.

I needs help!

I'm wanting to get a gift certificate for my Sister in law to her fav atlanta area restaurant for when she and my big bro will be in town (Christmas week) as one of her pressies. The restaurants name is Dominic's and it serves italian food and is in a nice little area. I've only been there once and it was night, so I didn't get a good look, but the trees all had nice lights.

If anyone can help me find the address/phone number of this place, I'd be SOOO grateful!!

related: Aren't there sites where you can buy a $50 gc for $25 to various local restaurants/shops/et cetera? I'm just about out the door as I type this, so I don't have the time to check at the moment... but if anyone has any links, that'd be super cool to check into.

I think that's it! Thanks a million.

I prefer Maggiano's, but I haven't tried this one yet. Looks good, anyway! It's funny, she's a convention planner so she's always getting free stays in the best hotels and free meals at the best restaurants... I went to her birthday party last year at Dominick's and thought it nice, but nothing exceptional. My guess is that it holds a lot of fond memories.

Oddly enough, it's named www.restaurant.com (http://www.restaurant.com/) Wise guy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/guinaevere/smilies/tongue.gif

That's a great site! They even have Dominicks listed, but they're all out of the half price GCs this month. So close.

Tybee

Atlanta Cuisine (my favorite site after CAG) also has half-priced GCs (www.atlantacuisine.com), but they come in small batches and go quickly. But they're also for really top notch restaurants. If you start hanging out over there I go by Hrothgar on the forums.

Not a fan of Maggiano's or Dominick's. My favorite Italian places in town are Sotto Sotto, La Grotta, and maybe Alfredo's. Figo is cheap and decent with nice weekly specials.

Thanks for that site, Tybee! I'll take a peek around.

And I also checked BigYellow both under "dominic's" (nothing resembling the restaurant) and "dominick's" and this is (http://www.restaurant.com/microsite.asp?rid=315383&rpid=3670) in fact the right place (yay for having a picture!!). I'm totally grateful to Ubii for the help in the correct spelling and the links, I just wanted to make sure I didn't drive all the way across the city for the wrong place.

Edit: I'm looking at the L'Thai GCs that are on Atlanta Cuisine. My big bro has become a thai fan, and that would be nice, but they're only gonna be here for a short stay...

I've eaten there twice. I don't know if I'd call it the best Thai in the city, but it's up there. It's unique because he uses primarily organic ingredients (all protein can be ordered with a slightly more expensive organic option). There's a long thread about it in the Atlanta Restaurants forum that will tell you everything you'd want to know about it:

Sounds great! I just don't understand how it can be on Peachtree St. and in Norcross. When I think of Norcross, I think of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Papa Deaux', and the area around there.

Thanks for all the info from two weeks before. I'm here in Atlanta now, ended up getting two Georgia CityPasses through the Maxwell AFB MWR (tax free damned it! :) ). I used Priceline's bidding system, and ended up getting a fifth floor room at the Evergreen Marriott Resort at Stone Mountain for $85 (regular price is around $180 I think). True trip planning by the way of the CAG!

The g/f and I are going to check out the Aquarium, CNN Center, Museum, and stop by Underground Atlanta tomorrow. Hell, I'm not even too sure about the best way from here to there. I ended up going to a Publix to pick up a few things to bring back earlier, and got lost. Then, a Hindu guy gave me bum directions that took me all the way around the park.

So, any local Kmarts or TRU's nearby? Wouldn't mind stopping to check up on some clearance stuff after everything else is taken care of tomorrow. Or have any suggestions on what else to check out while downtown tomorrow?

I'm honestly a big fan of thai myself, and if you're looking for a place closer to Hiram just head up east west connector towards south cobb drive. There's a place called Curry Curry about 3 miles before South cobb drive. The chef actually battled on Iron Chef and has recieved tons of awards. I recommend the masaman curry and try the basil rolls. They have a coconut soup that's interesting too.

I stopped by brandsmart near kennesaw sunday and found wii accessories and also advanced wars DS for 4.98. They were sold out on Advanced Wars, but they had plenty of Wii stuff.

Anyone know of any deals on a 19 inch widescreen lcd monitor? I'm looking to drop between 150 and 200.

Ugh. I'm tired of this shit. It was nice for a day or two, but a week and a half of 70+-degree weather in late December is just wrong. If I wanted summer year-round, I'd live in Florida or southern California. I like SEASONS. Warm weather when the grass is brown and there are no leaves on the trees is flat out depressing. Just makes me think of global warming. Thankfully, it will be cooling down tomorrow.

Rotwielers are renowned for their guard dog abilitied.Better as family dogs, though, from what I understand--on par with Golden Retrievers. What I've seen backs this up; my friend had one damn sweet Rotty when we were growing up. Dunno how that dog dealt with a family of 6 kids, but she was just the most laid back dog in the world.

Are you in Atlanta? There's a no-kill shelter with a website at www.pawsatlanta.org (http://www.pawsatlanta.org/) . They might be able to direct you to a shelter closer to where you live, too, or a Rotty rescue society that'll take the critter. Since the pup's from a breed with a mean reputation, there's a possibility that someone may want to take her to train for dog fighting, so getting her to an org with experience with that sort of thing might be a good idea.

I'm currently In oklahoma with my mom for the next 5 days. Time to scour Tulsa for gamer deals. I'm trying to find a second wireless 360 controller. Also sprint wireless internet is pretty good. I get roughly 128kb speeds, which is great for most basic usage.

Fry's in Alpharetta has PS3s, both 20GB and 60GB. Of course, it's a bundle again, but only 3 games and a controller this time, not 5. They had plenty of each, I'd say maybe 20 total, including an opened 20GB that they had marked as $475 if someone is interested in biting.

Spotted 3 60 GB PS3s at the Target on State Bridge Road and Peachtree Parkway in Alpharetta. They might last a while, because the clerk actively discouraged a person from getting it, noting that the games weren't any good and you needed to shell out another $50 for an HDMI cable (both half-truths).

Meanwhile, in the same time period, 5 other people came looking for Wiis. Looking back a year, I'm not sure anyone could have guessed that there was more interest for a new Nintendo system over any others and that the Playstation 3 would look unfavorable compared to the Xbox 360.

The Circuit City on Cobb Parkway has PS3s in-stock as of this afternoon. I witnessed a guy buy TWO PS3s. When I asked the clerk if they had both the PS3 and the Wii in-stock (they had empty boxes of both systems on their shelves), he said they had some PS3s, but no Wiis. Later on, when I was checking out, I witnessed someone asking about the Wii... the clerk look supremely annoyed, as if she had been fielding that question way too often.

I went to the TRU next door and walked away with Odama, Feel the Magic, and Karaoke Revolution Party (it was still on the shelf marked as $30; got it for $10). They don't have much left, but I did see 2 Odama's and a few Metroid Pinball games still in the bin.

Not sure where you live, but I looked for the game used using the store locator feature at ebgames.com. It looked like Lawrencville and Tucker each had at least 4 used copies. There were lots of other stores that showed 1-3 copies each. The only time I've seen them at those stores is on a release, like a Sunday morning where they have a minimum of that many systems.

As for PS3s, the shortage is over. This weekend, I was at 3 Targets, 2 Best Buys, and a Circuit City, and all of them had some. Heck, Best Buy and their release this morning had 65 and there were still 58 or so left this evening. I think the incessant demand is just about done. Nope they are taking inventory this weekend and putting the new gamestop computers in on Sunday. We have heard a few different scenarios for the old school gaming, but none that include a quick clearance. Right now it sounds like all items will be boxed up during the inventory and shipped out. Some people have reported they plan to sell it down first, but I heard tonight from a store manager he was told the prepare to box it up during inventory...

Any sales going on, if you have visited? Not a whole lot. The only thing I noticed was if you buy GoW, you can take $20 off of a GoW case. Which looks like a diamond plate (pretty sure it wasn't actually metal, though I could be wrong... I didn't really look at it) box about 16" wide, 12" tall and maybe 10" deep? And it has some sort of Gears of War logo/graphics on it.

I was kinda hoping Over G Fighters was still $10 off new but that ended around Christmas Eve. So I kinda missed out on that. But with EBs 25% off, I'll prolly pick it up used in town tomorrow.

Nope they are taking inventory this weekend and putting the new gamestop computers in on Sunday. We have heard a few different scenarios for the old school gaming, but none that include a quick clearance. Right now it sounds like all items will be boxed up during the inventory and shipped out. Some people have reported they plan to sell it down first, but I heard tonight from a store manager he was told the prepare to box it up during inventory...Having nothing to go on but familiarity with EBs old legacy games (not GS mind you, EB) I'm assuming all the 8bit-DreamCast titles will get shipped to the EB and GS stores which still carry the legacy games.

And there aren't very many of those around iirc. At least not many EBs. I'm not a big GS shopper, so I couldn't say for sure about them.

I saw one at the Northlake TRU over the weekend. Good luck with the flipping.

Doing my weekly grocery shopping last night Kroger was empty. I was speaking with a lady who said they were packed around 5pm and people were buying everything they could. After 7, not a soul in the store.

Okay, so the lows are expected to be in the mid to high 30s, highs in the 40s. So with no real chance of any precipitation freezing, exactly what sort of catastrophic weather is everyone fearing?

Imagine this, I even drove out to Athens today. Managed to get home as well. Startling, I know.

Ah, yes, indeed. Although it would cost me $10 minimum in gas to get to Douglasville and back, so I guess it evens out :)

I think the game is fun, and all, but I don't understand what the big deal is with it. I definitely am happy with my purchase (even if Gwen had to rub it in ), but for the last year, year and a half all I've heard is Phoenix Wright this and Phoenix Wright that. I got my DS right after Christmas and felt obligated to get it, due to all the hype around it.

I didn't know that.

There really is no standard day. If the system is the same when I worked there, there is a third party that ships the games to Blockbusters. It's all a matter of when the UPS guy delivers it and if they ship it out on time. Usually it will be on Friday, but I got games on Thursday, Saturday, Monday...it all depended. Also, rental games are the same way. Usually they will show up with the movie shipment on Tuesday, but Friday was another common day.

Around Sept GR switch to a single New game shipment to stores from the distributor each week to cut costs. They use to get them in multiple shipments as they came out during the week. Normally the shipments seem to hit Friday, but if no additional games are coming out I have seen them come in earlier. For the most part unless its a big hit they only get 1 or 2 copies of a game in...

Believe me. You guys are preaching to the choir. Unfortunately, it's not something I have a lot of choice about at this point. My wife has decided she wants to quit her job when we have children (sometime in the next two years) so she can stay home with them. Since she makes twice what I do, that's obviously going to mean a huge change in lifestyle. There's no way on Earth we'd be able to afford our current house on my salary alone.

Add the fact that wherever we move has to have good schools and the fact that she was born and raised in Carrollton (all of her family is there) and you can see why she's pushing for us to move out there (nevermind the fact that I'll still have to commute into Atlanta to work). She loves Decatur too, but her desire to stay home with the kids is stronger. So we're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Believe me. You guys are preaching to the choir. You know, when your earlier post ended with

Don't ask. :roll:it quite clearly read as, "It's Mrs Tybee's desire. Not mine."

But being a real Mom and raising your children is so much better than shuffling them off to some pre-school where who knows who's responsible for them and they learn that to get what they want, they just have to scream a little louder than the next kid. Plus kids need their parents.

Not too long ago I was watching this woman with her baby. The kids eyes were just instinctively drawn to the Mothers face. It's amazing the physical and emotional need a child has for the love and attention of their parents. People wonder why there are so many problems out there... it could have something to do with the fact that parents seemingly have absolutely interest in their children.

And dude, y'all see it clearly in a store or a mall. Some kid asking their Mum or Dad, what's this? how much is this? where are we going next? et cetera and the parent completely ignoring or giving some wise@ss answer as if to say, "stop bothering me! can't you see I'm busy looking at these very important spatulas?!!?!" If you and I can see how much that parent wants nufin to do with their kid, how much more so must that poor child feel it?

Aha! We may have a solution that will keep us in Decatur. We realized we could sell our house and buy a condo or townhome that is half the price but actually has more living space (we're in a 2/1 now, albeit with a full basement and a huge lot for downtown Decatur). We'll be able to afford it on my salary alone and we'll still be building equity. So we can start having kids and my wife can stay home with them. And we get to stay in Decatur, blocks from where we live now, so we'll still have the good schools and all of the creature comforts we enjoy now.

Feels like a huge weight has been lifted off us.

I am glad to hear that all those condos they're building are doing some good, Tybee!

They do seem to be building a lot of them, don't they?

We're looking at some of the nicer older ones (a lot of them seem to be on Church Street). We've always liked older houses (think 1900's-1940's, not 1960's-1980's ;) ) Not sure if that translates to multi-family housing, but the older ones are certainly bigger, more affordable, and have nicer landscaping. It shocks me that we could have a nice 3/2 in a good area for literally half the price of our current house.

Good luck at Fry's. We've had a $40 BB gc smoldering on the dining room table since Christmas, courtesy of my father-in-law's trollop of the week (wife's assessment, not mine). I've been lobbying to combine it with a GGC for a $5 Wario Ware: Smooth Moves and last night I got the go-ahead from the finance committee. ;)

They do seem to be building a lot of them, don't they?Is that so? That's prolly why my Sister-in-Laws condo hasn't sold yet. Many folks would rather buy new than used. *shrugs* Personally if I had a mortgage on a house I wasn't living in, and it wasn't selling, I'd lower the price and take a loss. It's better than paying $X00 each month into a financial black hole.

GAH!!! I have to email my big bro to see if their condo (on the market) has an online listing for you to at least check out.

Well, we'd still be interested. Actually, most we're looking at ARE 1960s-1980s-era, since that's what we can afford and they have the most space for the dollar (we just LIKE older than that, style-wise). We underestimated taxes a bit, so we may not be sitting quite as pretty as we thought. But we'll find something.

Is that so? That's prolly why my Sister-in-Laws condo hasn't sold yet. Many folks would rather buy new than used. *shrugs* Personally if I had a mortgage on a house I wasn't living in, and it wasn't selling, I'd lower the price and take a loss. It's better than paying $X00 each month into a financial black hole.

A lot of folks do seem to favor new construction, definitely the farther out you go. But that's not the case intown, where properties with character and better construction are prized.

At some point, yeah you need to drop the price or do SOMETHING to make the property more attractive. Still, mortgage payments aren't the "black hole" that rent is, as you will theoretically get most of it back. Just sucks mightily to be paying it on a property you're not living in.

We're currently in our third house. We sold each of the previous two within a month of listing. The first was a 1960s ranch in Smyrna. We were there a little less than two years (planned to be there for at least 5) and still managed to make almost $45,000 on the sale by doing minimal upgrades like refinishing the floors, putting up crown moulding, and painting everything.

Second house in Greenville, SC was built in 1913 and was on the National Historic Register. We thought we were going to be there for a long time, so we bought nice appliances and paid ~$8,000 to have the entire house rewired. We were there less than a year. But we still broke even (primarily because wife's company paid the closing costs).

Not sure what's going to happen with the current house, but I know we won't take a loss. I can debunk one myth: White/beige walls DO NOT sell houses. Some realtors/sellers seem to think the more sterile the better. But if you have a good eye for color, people will be psychologically fooled into thinking the house is inherently more valuable simply because of the colors on the wall.

I made my trip to Fry's last night to check on Hotel Dusk and Phoenix Wright 2. I had missed the $25 price on PW2 by a day, and they were out of stock, anyway. Hotel Dusk was a full $35, so I scoffed at that.

However, tucked away beside the stack of Portrait of Ruins were two copies of CV: Dawn of Sorrow for $35, so I took that as a sign to finally get myself a copy. I haven't seen it for sale anywhere else in recent months (OOP?), and the gift card made it a nice deal for me.

So, woohoo! If anyone still needs this game, check out Fry's. This was the Alpharetta store.

Where did everybody go!?

I got the ad for MicroCenter in the mail yesterday and they're going to be doing trade-ins on games. Hopefully they'll have competitve prices. I went out of my way to buy my MP3 player there and had a very good experience. If they give good prices I'll trade my stuff there. More options are always good. Gamerush sometimes gives good prices but their selection is not the best (that's being kind). Gamestop is...well, Gamestop. My poor, poor Rhino is gone (I know kjauburn feels my pain) so this MC news is good.

UPDATE:

There's a possibility of sleet and/or ice tonight!! We're all gonna die!!!!!!!

Where did everybody go!? Seriously. I even baked some cookies for everyone and no one stops by. pfft to all of you.

I got the ad for MicroCenter in the mail yesterday and they're going to be doing trade-ins on games. Yeah, I was laughing at the part about them having a big selection of used games (or wording something like that). Each time I've been in there, they've only had about 10-12 used games. Granted you have to start somewhere, but they need to do some sort of advertising to get the word out.

By any chance did you stop at the GameRush right there, neo? I was curious if they had a decent selection, but I'm too lazy to drive out there if there's nothing else to scope out. Of course, the sketty wearhouse is right near so that's an okay excuse. Not the best food, but I love that chain for sentimental reasons and because sitting in the streetcar, eating fattening italian food and playing DS games is about the best thing ever.

Changing topic, I was wondering what everyone thought about getting together some Sunday night at a restaruant/bar called Taco Mac (I think that's what it's called)? I know folks who used to go to the one in Douglasville for halo tournaments, so they might be a viable option for us doing a wii party.

So I've been doing a LOT of thinking lately. For the longest time I've wanted to open up more or less a geek store. Games, computer modding and hardware, comics, cards, movies, and CD's. Maybe two arcade machines in the place and some internet cafe style computers.

Well, this was all a pipe dream up until I went to visit my mom in Oklahoma and I saw it. And It was good. It was Vintage Stock (http://www.vintagestock.com/), and it's a place out in the midwest primarily. I think they have around 12 stores and they seem to do well. So This got me to thinking. Why not. Why not go and open that video game store. But where?
So here's where I'm currently thinking: Hiram. It's growing super fast, it's more on my side of town, and there seems to be no computer parts/computer repair stores in the area, so right there I'd have a niche. Not to mention I'd be a geek paradise with halo tournament, Wii and DS nights, card tournament and pen and paper nights.

Here's what I'm looking for. Ideas. Any ideas that you've always wanted to see in a game store? I thought about staffing it with cosplayed college girls (kinda like a geeky hooters esque sorta thing) but I don't think that would put over well in Hiram.

Also, does anyone think a location in ATL is more ripe for a game store? I'm really looking to cater to gamers who are ages 14-35, mainly young males. I also considered opening up near KSU for this reason.

So any ideas are welcome. Anyone with any insight on what a 3500 sq ft to 5000 sq ft retail space normally runs. Anyone who's ever thought seriously or has any information would be awesome.

This isn't my first business either. I currently run a small construction company, so I do understand very well what I'm looking at.

Any ideas?

I would think Sandy Springs, Alpharetta or Kennesaw would be a much better target that Hiram. Yeah, you might have competition, but you'll also actually have people who might come in your store.

Well, my hometown is Hiram, so I can give you a little bit of insight. It is definitely growing fast, so it seems like a suitable spot. I know when I was in high school there was not much to do there in the way of fun besides the movie theatre and going out to eat. I think as long as you have regular tournaments/get-togethers it can turn out to be a cool hang-out that could develop a ripe following. Advertise near the schools to try and get the locals coming weekly. I know if there was a social video game store (EB never had any events) while I was in high school, I would've been there a lot. While it will be hard to include EVERY game, try not to exclude any one group. Take suggestions on what people want to play. I'm sure everyone wants to play Wii/DS/Halo, but there's probably others that want a weekly Magic:TG tourney.

With that said about my hometown, I visit KSU a lot as my girlfriend goes there. Of course, since it is a college there are a ton of people that play Smash Bros and Halo and well, prolly anything you can think of. But in an area with so many businesses, you will need some thing that will make them go to your place instead of EB/Gamestop or Trade N Play. The obvious is competitive prices and social events.

Well I wish you luck in your endeavors and I definitely plan to visit if you open shop.

EDIT: Also, one of the cool things about being in Athens now is the nearby comic shops (3 that I can think of). When I was back home, I always had to drive to Marietta for comics because there are no shops in Hiram or Douglasville (however, that'd be great if I was wrong). Something to think about.

Exactly. You'll have a lack of competition in Hiram, true, but only because THERE'S NO ONE IN HIRAM, including customers.

If your target market is college guys, then you're going to (duh) want to be near a college. Kennesaw could work. But remember that it's still primarily a commuter college, so there's no guarantee that the people you want hanging out at your place necessarily live in close proximity. Also, Kennesaw is not exactly rife with geeks, as it mainly caters to international students, adult education, nursing and business majors.

I would think a much better move would be the west side of downtown, where you could draw clientele from Tech and GSU. No lack of geeks there (I'm allowed to say that because I married one). Also, there is a dearth of gaming/comic shops here (most of the Tech kids seem to come over to to the EB and BB at Edgewood). Yes, the overhead is going to be more, but so is your traffic, and there will always be new blood coming through as students graduate and new ones come in. And that area is really on the rise as they convert a lot of old factories and warehouses into lofts and retail space. Might be a good time to buy in.

THERE'S NO ONE IN HIRAM, including customers....HEY!

Guys, you really have no idea how fast this area has grown.

Edit: Speaking of local stores. Justin, the AM at the EB in Hiram (he's the big tall kid) was so excited last night. He comes over to me, "gwen guess what?"
"what?!"
"I got my Firefighters job today!"
He was SO excited. He's always wanted to be a fireman, and passed his training and tests earlier in 2006, but he's been waiting to get hired at a local house. He had an interview yesterday morning, and they called him at 5 to hire him. YAY Justin!!!

It'll be sad to see him leave, but I'm totally happy for him. Daniel will move up to AM and Stephanie will be third key and finally stop having to look for other part time jobs, as she should be getting more hours now. Yay all around.

*giggles* I did find out that Justin was the one who threw out all the penny guides the other evening and I yelled at him for it, and told him because of that I won't give him a congratulatory present for his new career. So he blames the manager, "he told me to." Yeah yeah, excuses. ;)

I will miss this store a lot when I move. =(

...HEY!

Guys, you really have no idea how fast this area has grown.

Almost sounded plausible until I remembered that the person arguing this is herself moving away. ;)

I'm sure Hiram is seeing the same explosion of strip malls, QTs, Mal-Warts, and T.J.I. Outback AppleChili's that Carrollton, Cumming, LaGrange, and all of these other formerly far-flung locales are experiencing. I still don't think that makes them the best locale for the kind of business magicite is proposing. You and Tsuyoi are the exception, not the rule, Gwen (which is why you're posting here in the first place). You've got families with young kids out there and retirees, not an overabundance of high school and college kids with a lot of disposable income. You could argue the captive audience angle, but I just don't think you'd get enough traffic from the kind of people you're looking for to make a business like this profitable in that kind of pseudo-rural/suburban outskirts area.

Oh I would never suggest that it is, but only because I'm not in that sort of business and I don't purport to know anything about the matter. I can only tell you that traffic around here is heavy from early morning till 8ish at night. Lots of soccer moms, high school kids with cars and nothing to do, and people who actually work for a living.

Actually, there was a place that opened up on the corner of Hemphill & 10th last year that sold nothing but board games and it failed miserably. It couldn't have been any closer to campus, and it had tons of traffic as it was next to the big bar spot and big sandwich spot. Obviously video games are bigger business than board games, but opening a nerd store next to Tech isn't a sure thing. In fact, there was even an old-school arcade opened in that same strip that didn't last more than a month. One final note, GaTech has a pretty established gaming club... they have a few Xbox360s networked and running on projection screens in the student lounge. It costs $$ to jump in, but your hypothetical store would already have some serious competition.

All that being said, I think your idea kicks ass. Good luck!

I was planning to open a comic shop last april, but plans were squashed when we found out a baby was on the way. I was planning to use my consulting business to fund the start up of the store, but there was no way I was going to do that with they baby news since I was planning on pushing $50,000 into it. I was planning to open the store in Roswell since both Roswell/Alpharetta just don't have any comic stores anymore. Everyone drives to Oxford or Dr. Nos.

As a kid my comic shop of choice was Book Nook (when my mom would take me there). In HS I would occasionally visit Dr. No's. There was a Titan Comics and Games less than a mile from where my wife and I lived in Smyrna, but comics were a brief period in my life and I don't think the finance committee would tolerate revisiting that little income diversion. She grudgingly endorses Wii and DS-related purchases as it is. ;)

Ha, you know, I've noticed that closed store just recently, as I've been visiting a young lady in the area. I didn't even think about it when I was suggesting things. That's a good point to keep in mind.

The point about Roswell/Alpharetta being devoid of comics is spot-on, though. I used to hit the Classic Comics on Hwy 9 years ago, but they closed. Then I moved my business up to the store by Mall of Georgia for a while. Now that I'm intown, I shop at Oxford. It works, but I would enjoy seeing a shop in Roswell or Alpha again...

Hey Sideswiper! Welcome to the forums (and, on behalf of Cheapy and Wombat, to the podcast). You'll be happy to see that Atlanta has one of the most consistently active local threads on the site. I'm in Decatur too (near the square), 32, also married. Of the frequent posters in this thread, we've got several folks in and around Decatur and then most of the rest seem to be farther out, but everyone's nice. None of my coworkers and few of my friends play games either. My wife enjoys them occasionally.

We've been trying to organize a local get together for a while now, but it hasn't worked out for one reason or another. I think there's some concern about inviting a bunch of strangers over to one's house. I know my wife was iffy on the idea. ;) Might make more sense to meet in public somewhere first to get to know each other and make sure nobody's an axe murderer and THEN follow that up with a gaming meet at someone's place. Brickstore, anyone?

Wow, I haven't visited this thread in a few weeks...I missed a decent amount of chatter!

To Tybee:
Glad to hear that your OTP exodus might be averted; nobody should have to live in Carrollton! ;) The wife and I are indeed returning to the Atlanta area, and though we'd like to buy another house in Decatur eventually, we're gonna have to live in an apartment for a while when we get back (we've got one waiting for us off N. Highland for March 1). Hopefully I'll be back near my beloved Brickstore soon enough!

To the guy wanting to open a store:
I think that is a great idea, but it is one of those things that would have to be done just right in order to work. Location would be everything, and a steady stream of well-advertised events would be your bread and butter. I agree that an intown location would be ideal; somewhere in the Emory-GSU-Tech triangle. There are lots of nerds there, but the key (i think) is to cater to 'hip' nerds rather than the pocket-protector crowd. There are lots of dudes like me (29, married, computer geek, PR professional, musician, etc) who love gaming and other geeky stuff, but who also appreciate some good rock n roll, tasty beers, and a fine cigar from time to time. In short, we're not Poindexters, but we do love to geek out.
/my two cents

To all else:
Once I get back to Atlanta, this thread will once again be started by an Atlanta resident! Imagine that! I miss the robust atl CAG community - San Fran/Bay Area has a shit CAG community compared to Atlanta!

Get back soon. We miss ya around here. As to comics/gaming shops. During the 90s there was a nice surge and comic shops went up all over the place around the country. The bubble burts and now it's hard to run a profitable store, from what I hear. I'm not against them by any means, but I do hope that anyone with such a venture in mind does their research well and has contingency plans in the event that their store does not succeed.

I have to say though, that the first season theme does sound a bit like the Flash Gordon theme.Don't you mess with the opening. That's the best Five Dollar Intro ever. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/guinaevere/smilies/smile_eager.gif I say that both in jest and in truth. For a *really* low budget opening, the music and the animation is just right. It fits.

Now for going Queen/Flash Gordon on me, I will have to hurt you. Because to this day, I can't decide if the music or the movie itself was worse than the other. You, my dear Detective have made me see that the Big O intro can be compared with the Flash theme song. And that I'm not happy about.

Not at all. Not compared to any other big city in the world. I miss it in fact.I've done a good amount of travel in my years, and this citys sprawl vs the civic engineering (ie, roads) prove a very bad combination.

But for what it's worth, the younger brother isn't looking to hit another city. He needs a quiet area.

You'll be driving a whole lot to go to all those different places, especially since Fry's are far out in the burbs. But it should be worth the trip.

I've only been to Fry's once around when they opened, and the kids working there were rude and clueless. I also didn't see any deals to get excited about. Has it improved?

Deals can be hit or miss, but it's always fun to walk around and see what they have. The variety of goods that they sell almost rivals a Wal-Mart. I mean, 12 packs of soda and transistors? Pocket bikes and 60" plasmas? Office furniture and car stereos? It's just crazy! As for customer service, I never expect much at a place like that, but at least I never have to wait for a register, which is much better than Best Buy or Circuit City.

So is there still any interest in meeting up tomorrow? I'm supposed to paint a bedroom, so I might be indisposed. On the other hand, it would be an easy way to get out of it. ;)

Let me know if anyone wants to meet up at the Brickstore or anywhere else.

Sandy Springs Target has about 5 Baten Kaitos (NGC) for $4.98. I almost bought another one because.. hey for $5 who wouldn't.

I also got a nice deal at Microcenter, Viewtiful Joe 2, Bloodrayne, and SSX Tour all for $11.. however that was the last VJ2 and last SSX Tour.

Remember way back when, when someone (I think Gwen) posted about those Phoenix Wright's for $19.99 at the Douglasville TRU? Well, I finally got my wife to stop in there on Friday and they had one left. Hooray! Played it all weekend. GREAT, GREAT game. I was dumb for not getting this before now. I'm almost done with the third case. I'm sure as soon as I finish it I'll want the sequel.

Unfortunately, no luck finding the above mentioned $5 Baten Kaitos at Target. Anybody seen them other places around town?

While we're at it, if anyone sees Advance Wars for the DS at any Best Buys around town, please let me know.

went shopping thru central atlanta looking for BestBuys. Some guy with the list is sweeping pretty much everything himself at buckhead. The two others I went two were empty. I still managed to make out with 2 Kingdom Hearts, Worms, and I noticed Fire Emblem for $10 and picked it up as well.

I don't suppose any nice ATL CAG happened to see that PS2 Rugby 2005 game, or either an Xbox or PS2 World Soccer Winning 11? I just recently got hooked on the sports, and now looking for the games cheap. ;)

Anyone know if the CompUSA in Buckhead closed? I looked on their webpage, and they list Knoxville as having the closest store. I don't remember the one in ATL closing... weird.

In other news... ROAD TRIP!

Knoxville Knoxville!!! I can't wait to visit the Wig Sphere!

All CompUSAs in Georgia are closing. Indeed, the company is shutting down half of its locations in a major restructuring. They're going to be liquidating the inventory in those stores. There are several threads discussing it.

Except Augusta which might as well be in SC.

I hit Douglasville and Acworth and found a few things (including FW guys with their lists), but the big surprize was the BestBuy in Anniston Alabama. A lot of that area is kinda ...well, the BB is in a new shopping center and I thought they'd have nothing as one would expect most locals would have done their Christmas shopping there. Not a very pleasant store, but I did get a couple things.

Edit: clarified BB= best buy, not blockbuster.

Second Edit: If anyone hits up a CompUSA and sees Ipods or Creative Zen Vision M or Zunes with 30gig or higher on sale, please let me know.

I stopped by there on Tuesday afternoon and found the same thing. (I was driving to Canton and had some time to kill).

I didn't have any better luck at the store here in Macon either.

Target @ Edgewood has ~5 Classic Controllers, 3 Wiimotes, and 3 Nunchucks in stock. First time I've ever seen these things sitting on a shelf in a store.

Don't know if y'all are following that CCity 16.96 thread, but there are some good games at that price up at Northpoint. I got Contact and Scourge (which was 12.96) tonight, and there are still copies of Phoenix Wright, Rocket Slime, and quite a few others in a bin behind the video games section.

CC never even downloaded a list of these latest games to be marked down. If it wasn't for CAG's posting their finds CC probably wouldn't have sold a single copy, except by accident. CC corporate's level of incompetence keeps reaching new lows.

Hate to hear that a lot of people missed out on the BB clearance. Between three stores I lucked out with about 15 quality games like Earned In Blood, Mercenaries, Republic Commando, Katamari D, Darkwatch, Onimusha 2, Mechwarrior 2, Jade Empire. I know there was a hoarder sans list following the kid restickering games in snellville BB, so I struck up a conversation with the kid and he let me take a look at what he had left to put out. I had my list, but it was funny to see her glaring while she waited. That BB is pretty cleared out by her and some other hoarders. The Pleasant Hill/I85 one is also empty as is the one off 285 and la vista. They all just have some poker game, monster house, and some cruddy games. The new buckhead store (#890, I think) is your local star wars emporium. I think they had a dozen of each SW game on clearance on all systems. I don't remember seeing them the first time I went there. By the way, I didn't really look at psp or ds games so some of those stores may have those.

Two side notes. First, Fry's is very hit and miss. Awesome deals among overpriced. The best thing about them are the big deals and PMing if you don't want to drive that far. I got MLB2k7 for 48.99 last week (Up for Live games with fellow CAGers) and GRAW2 for 34.99 today. $25 OFF!!!!

Second, Guin, are you looking for GC memory cards on a deal or just looking for them? Walmart in Snellville had a couple. I couldn't get a good look because they were stuffed awkwardly into the lower case, but I could look again next time I'm there.

Glad to hear you did well, dawg. And good work cutting the hoarder off like that. ;)

At the acworth store, I did pretty well but there were around five hoarders with lists looking for/snatching everything they could. Two of them looked in my little handbasket and asked if I was going to eBay my stuff. I told them, "no, I'm from CAG, we all trade or sell to each other at cost to help each other out." They didn't know quite what to say. :D

But the employees were impressed as I knew the titles I was looking for without a list. And I was generally one step ahead of them as they were looking through the game section to pull the games to put on a table. Granted, I only found what thhey had instock, but that's better than nothing.
How did everyone else do?

I have a 512 and a few 256's but I'd like to grab one 1000 to throw all my saves from the 256 cards onto and then just trade in my 256 cards for next to nothing at EB or put them on my tradelist.

Anyone know off hand if this Sundays AJC has coupons to the Auto Show? Years back I'd get coupons in the paper about two or three weeks ahead of the show. I totally forgot to pick up a paper for the show until just now.
