I was wondering about how to rip sprites and animations from games...like the ones you see all over in people's sigs (like mine.) What programs open them? as far as I can tell, photoshop and paint only show the first frame.

also, what sites host animated gifs? I want to host my sig so i don't rape the poor guy's bandwidth, but photobucket won't let me save it and when I drag and drop it, I only get the first frame.

Thanks or any help.

I'll have to do some research of how people create sprites, but I am pretty sure it inolves capturing several emulator images and cleaning up everything other than the part you want to keep (elimnating the background for example). The you would probably have to use something like Adobe Imageready and put all the files together.

You can use these to host gifs...

Those are the ones I use the most.

I uploaded that jill gif to picvault for you.

The way I do that is I record a certain length of video in an emulator and open it up in amovie editing program and crop out the sprite.

Programs that handle .gif's are Animation Shop and ImageReady.

Thanks guys-- got this edited right :)

what about with console games-- I guess you'd need a vid capture card and all that? Are those cheap?

It depends on the console. If it's a console that's emulated thoroughly (PS, N64, etc.) you can capture sprites directly through that.

Emulation is definitely the way to go. Some emulators make things especially easy, ZSNES and MAME for example, both of which allow you to pause and advance the emulation frame-by-frame, so you can easily get a nice series of shots for animation. My crappy little website (http://members.accesstoledo.com/allnatural) is almost completely devoted to gifs I've made.

I don't think it is crappy at all. Thanks for sharing. :)
