I just made it to a huge caste and pulled up the drawbridge. I've been playing just over 10 hours according to my save file...

Probably about half way. The first chapter is definitely the longest.

Sorry I couldn't help myself :D

You probably have about another ten hours to go if you're going to do the side missions and all.

you'll love the castle, lots of fun!

if by locations, i'd say about 1/3 way through.

enjoy every part my friend.

after you finish, you'll wish RE5 was already available.

Yep. Don't dick around too much in the castle and you're at halfway. Keep your eyes open for treasure because there's a ton of it in there.

I'm just about at a hedge maze or something and Napoleon just told me his pets will be waiting for me (probably dogs if I had to guess). I just ran out of shotgun ammo though and I'm a little low on funds too - I need some treasure right about now... this game is so freaking awesome though - I'm definitely playing through it again when I'm done...

Crap. That's what I thought - it's actually my weapon of choice throughout the game... and tht's why I'm running low... I can go back to a merchant and buy some ammo I guess...

RE 4 is the best game i have played in years and years and years, possibly ever. The one gripe i had though was the castle part of the game. I felt it was somewhat of a comedown after the creepiness that you felt being outside. Not that it was bad by any means. I just thought the atmosphere at the beginning was a little better.

Anyone else agree?

Dr Mario Kart

I cant believe you actually need to throw down some conservation.

I used my pistol to set up one of the following situations, even with multiple enemies around:

a) If they are running at you, shoot them once in the chest to stop them, them shoot them once below the knees to force crouch them, then you can do a melee move. (If you shoot them below the knees while running, they trip and fall instead of crouching). The castle is the first time (I believe) that you can suplex people. I once suplexed a guy THREE times.

b) Purposefully trip them and knife them until they get up.

Javery
06-12-2006, 11:43 AM
Wow, you can suplex people and shoot their knees to make them fall? I think I suck at this game... I am going to go back and play it again though because in the beginning I was wasting ammo like crazy because I had no skills. Now I can take out a regular enemy with one regular bullet and a melee attack. Also, in the beginning I used to stand my ground instead of run so I was constantly shooting at like 10 villagers instead of running, taking one or two out and repeating. This might be the best game I've ever played - everything is just about perfect so far (although I definitely agree being outside was way creepier)...

ArthurDigbySellers
06-12-2006, 11:49 AM
I followed basically the same strategy has DMK. I would shoot them in the knee/leg, melee them, and then knife the living shit out of them when they were on the ground.

In the beginning of the game, you can kill most villagers pretty easily this way. Now when they start swarming you, it's shotgun time...just make sure you let them get close enough to really bring the pain.

mr ryles
06-12-2006, 11:31 PM
I think the best part of the game is right after the castle until the end, there is an awsome boss fight, won't spoil anything, and also the last boss is quite a challenge until you figure out his pattern.

don't forget to pick up that free broken butterfly!

I went back to get it (haven't fired it yet) - that's where Ashley gets on my shoulders to go through the window, right? On my way back the guy with the sickle scared the shit out of me (in the room with the cage) because I thought I already cleared all the enemies and I wasn't expecting anyone in there... I bought the treasure map and I was going back to try and get the ones I seem to have passed. I left off last night in the room with all the lava and fire breathing dragons... so cool...

I'm running out of room in my supply case and I have the XL one... I am carrying around a rocket launcher, Red9, Semi-Auto Rifle, broken butterfly, the good shotgun and a shitload of grenades and herbs though. Always be prepared! Maybe I'll dump some of the flash grenades - I have like 10 of them and I haven't used a single one yet...

I would have even settled for a "switching weapons" animation that cost you a second or two. As it is now you can switch instantaneously...

You can switch it instantly, but there is still that delay to pull your hands up :D

Which is the trouble i always run into - I thought i was a l337 and knife bunch of those villagers... at the last moment i felt i was going to get owned, switch to shotgun but the delay to pull the gun up and fire still gets me everytime.

There goes my 1/4 HP in hard mode.

I hated that part as well. I agree with Dr. Mario Kart but you can also...

Try to use the pillars in the room to your advantage run behind them and pop them when their backs are to you. You have to keep moving but it worked for me. Also try and take one out really quick as even one of them can take you out in a heartbeat.

Try working your way around them using the corridor on the left. If you can keep them towards one side of the room, you can pull out your rifle and tag them in the back.

I think I read somewhere that you can actually run straight up to them, put the shotgun into their chest, and pull the trigger. If you do it right, it will register a hit to their back and if you are fast enough, they die very quickly.

Of course I read that after already getting past it on my own.

Which is better? I almost bought the PS2 version because it was in true 16x9 but I like the GCN controller better and it was designed from the ground up to be played on the GCN. I've been playing it in "zoom" mode on my TV and it fills out pretty nicely to 16x9...

There's your answer. Worked quite nicely for me after getting killed the first dozen times with other techniques.

Also, I guess I should be ashamed that I only played through it once within the first 3 days it came out...I might get the PS2 version for Seperate Ways, though.

GC of course. The controller feels much better. Graphics/Textures... they all better than PS2. I got PS2 just for the extras. I bought PS2 first, that was when it came out during TRU B2G1 free deal. So, I took advantage of that. I bought the GC next cause its the best version and it dropped to $20.

OK, I finally started playing this again after taking about 2 weeks off from it. I beat up on that Alien looking dude in the sewer area and activated the elevator and went downstairs and Chapter 4-1 finally ended. I didn't kill the thing though so I hope that doesn't come back to haunt me later on... It took me a while to figure out how to kill him - he kept chopping my head off in like 3 seconds until I got good at running away and dodging his attacks. Then I had to figure out how to activate the freezing gas cannister thingy.
I hope to play some more tonight in between my UNO match and watching some Firefly.

It just keeps getting better and better. Also, don't use a strategy guide or anything - the puzzles are easy enough to figure out and the enemies/bosses can be killed pretty easily after a few tries. The beginning of the game actually frustrated me a little because right when you get into the first part of town you get mobbed by zombies and since you are just starting out they can be overwhelming - especially since you probably aren't used to the controls. I went back and played the first 20 minutes or so of the game and I was kicking ass right away because I know how to fight now. If you liked the other REs I can't imagine you not liking RE4. I wouldn't worry too much about it right now Shipwreck. Honestly, I felt very similar to you. I was enjoying the early parts, but it didn't seem to be game of the year material out of the gate. I wouldn't say it gets a ton better, as much as it grows on you. I think you notice later that the game is really great out of the gate, it just doesn't grab you the way some games do (though, I will say, the last hour or 2 of the game really ramps into overdrive, to the point where you hate to see it end because your loving it so much.
