I just finished up Fire Emblem for GC and am looking for something new to play on the system. I've been thinking about getting Battalion Wars, but the reviews I read on metacritic were pretty mixed. I don't really mind if it's on the short side (which seemed to be the biggest criticism), I just want it to be fun while it lasts. I can get it for $25 after GGC at Best Buy. Any strong opinions one way or another? Thanks.

I enjoyed it. There's something about a whole squad of ack-acks firing in unison on an incoming enemy gunship that makes me all tingly inside. :)
If you can accept that it's more mindless action than strategy, I'd say it's worth twenty-five. I paid the full fifty for it and don't regret it, even though I beat it in about six hours.

The one feature I think is sorely missing though (besides multiplayer) is a mission editor. That would've increased the replay value immeasurably.

Battalion Wars was a ton of fun while it lasted. If you had any interest in the Advance Wars series on the GBA, then you'll really get a kick out of how Battalion Wars fleshes it out and brings it to life in a real time strategy environment. For $25, it's a good buy.

Have you gotten to play it yet? If so, what do you think of it so far?

After finishing LEGO Star Wars and unlocking everything, I finally allowed myself to start Battalion Wars over the weekend. I had picked it up last year shortly after it came out in a TRU B2G1 sale.

I must say, it's pretty darn fun. I'm on the fifth or sixth mission now, where you first get the artillery and you have to capture those three flag towers across the river. The farther along you go, the more strategy is involved. You can't just select all of your units and throw them at the enemy. There's definitely an art to it. I don't know how long it is, but I've already gotten good play value out of it. Plus, I'm going to have to go back and redo several missions to get my average up so I can unlock the bonus missions.

I will say that the control scheme can be a bit frustrating. Many times I mean to leave certain units behind, only to discover they've been following me. It's especially frustrating when you know you're being timed and you're spending so much time fussing with who goes and who stays. This is particularly true when you're selecting individual units rather than unit types. But there's almost never a call for this, so not that big of a deal.

Nice surprise: It's one of the very, very few games on the GCN to run in both progressive scan and 16:9, which looks great.
