My son and I have been tackling on past and present rpg's. I'm walking him through old school and new RPG's so far we have visited:
Final Fantasy I & II
Final Fantasy IV advance
Final Fantasy V
Dragon Quest 8
Paper Mario
Zelda II
Zelda a link to the past
What games you think we should tackle next? We just did dragon quest 8 and with summer vacations we could take 2 or 3 games(gotta take him to see some sunshine also, every now and then, lol) He already reads so it's cool that we can both play not just him looking how i play. So post your recommendations preferaly with hours it takes per game, thanks for looking at my thread!

He would probably enjoy the humor and style of Super Mario RPG, along with Paper Mario (both 64 version and GC). Earthbound might be good as well, along with Secret of Evermore.
Trying to think of the games I enjoyed as a kid....

My 6 year old nephew adores Tales of Legendia, he also likes Tales of Phantasia on the GBA. Lots of fighting game style battles keep him occupied for hours.

Those are good recommendation, he actually enjoys all the Final Fantasy rpg's and im trying to show him the complete final fantasy series, but since some of them are 40+ hours i take breaks with "lighter rpg's (mind you this is not a race we been playing rpg's for like a year), it's not just "light rpg's" like paper mario, robotrek etc. but more like greatest console rpg's of all time (except creepy stuff like parasite eve, silent hill etc) that should be played at least once.
Thanks for all those good recommendations!

Fallout.
Wow your such an animal, making a kid play Fallout, honestly what is wrong with you. The kid should paly Fallout 2 (far superior to one, don't even try to argue).

Secret of Mana. It's one of the very best SNES rpg's AND it has a great co-op mode so both of you can play at the same time.

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (SNES) is what I gave my little bro for his first rpg years ago one Xmas. It's quick and easy, and easy to read for young players. Alot of gamers don't like this game, but I think they just expect too much from what it really is: an easy game for beginner rpg players.

That was gonna be my reccomendation- super light and easy, makes a great 'breather' game after getting through a 40-70 hour monster.
Plus, I love that Life is strongest attack spell in the game. :D
Pokemon. Admit it, you all love Pokemon.

Secret of Mana would be great for you two since you can both play... and it's a fantastic game. Also, Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow are all great as well.
And if he likes FF... then give him a taste of FFVI, IMO the best FF game. He might also enjoy Grandia and Wild ARMs.

Make sure not to miss this one game, it's called "catch". It's pretty simple really, and all you need is a football or a baseball with mitts. All you do is stand like 10-20 yards apart from one another and throw the ball back and forth. When that gets old, you can mix it up by increasing the distance between one another or maybe leading the other person on a route if you happen to be throwing the football around, etc. You may find that it is suprisingly fun.
In all seriousness, I'm saying this because I wish as a child that my father would have spent more time throwing the ball around with me. Now I'm not bitter about this because he had a shit job at the time and his hours were hard to work around, and I have a older brother who filled the shoes nicely; but I'd give anything to play some catch and shoot the bull with my pops.
Just remember, video games are cool and all... but you're only a kid once.

Just started final fantasy mystic quest, he likes it, easy to master, next we'll probably go for secret of mana, but I have to admit I am curious about that "catch" game, sounds like a good multiplayer game, definitly worth a shoot. :)
Thanks for all those great recommendations.
PS: pokemon games are like "his" he plays them by his own on the go, and yeah everyone loves pokemon. :)

I was going to recommend Robotrek to you but since you've already thought of that I'd suggest "Brainlord" as a definite, plus it's got some educational value with the puzzles.
Also in terms of quality story I'd suggest the Enix Trilogy without question. In case you don't already know what it is that's "SoulBlazer", "Illusion Of Gaia" and "Terranigma".

Breath of Fire 1 and 2 (released on super nintendo and gameboy advance) are pretty enjoyable and easy to pick up.
edit: Oh and nice job on the Mystic Quest pick up, I have fond memories of that from my own childhood.

ChoroQ for the PS2 isn't a bad choice for a 6 year old...its a CarPG as they call it. I can also recommend (if it hasn't been already) LOZ: Wind Waker and Kingdom Hearts Chain of memories for the GBA.

Secret of Mana would be fantastic for both of you to enjoy together.
Actraiser is a good rpg/sim/side scroller that isn't too long, but is a damn fine game.
The remakes of Dragon Warrior 1-3, as well as 5 and 8 are wonderful. Would be a good taste of new vs old.
Dunno if you are branching into Strat rpgs much, but phantom brave has a fantastic story with great game mechanics. But its a long game if you include sidequests.
Skies of arcadia is a great classic style rpg, but it has the benefit of a completely unique world.
All the wild arms games are fun within reason. 3 is my favorite, but since he's younger he could probably really get into 4 which has a lot of emphasis on being young in the storyline.

To Phantom Brave shush! First he must experience the crack that is Dragon Force.

It's pushing the definition of RPG, but Mario RPG for the SNES was awesome.

Secret of Mana two player rpg goodness, really you couldn't ask for a better two person RPG. It's a shame that Legend of Mana the second player never levels up it was an amazing game.

I'll make a quick list of what I played as I was growing up.
Actually, I'll make a quick list after I state this. CHRONO TRIGGER!
Seriously, Chrono Trigger. I rented this game no less than five times as a kid, and not even consecutively. It was five-or-so times seperated by many months. I would just walk down the SNES aisle at Blockbuster with my dad, find nothing new or interesting, and notice Chrono Trigger omgomg daddy I gotta have it again! Played that thing to death.
And no, I didn't jump on the Chrono Trigger bandwagon after hearing everyone loved it and its popularity exploded. Y'see, back in those days, I had no internet, so my love for this game was born straight from my childish heart, not cr0nokid1469 and his posse on GameFAQs.
To this day, I call it my favorite game of all time. It truly is one of those games that brings back childhood memories.
Anyway, here's some stuff I grew up with:
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Mario RPG
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest
Final Fantasy VI
I know there's more, but I'm drawing a blank.
Sure, most of those have been mentioned, but those games were appealing to me as a kid, so I'm sure you and yours will like them as well.

EDIT: Unless you're emulating...

Phantasy Star Collection (at least for Phantasy Star I) and Sword of Mana for the Gameboy Advance are good, although IMHO, both are better played using a GC Gameboy Player.

If you have a Genesis then Shining Force I & II are a must. Also Shining In The Darkness, it's a cartoonie kind of dungeon crawler but is also the predecessor to the Shining force games. Also Phantasy star II is really good, but lenghty.

Pffft - that`s so 20th Century. Get with the times, dude!

If you never grow up (as I intend to do) then this won`t be a problem. ;)

Wow
That's basically my story right there, except I saw the boxart when I was a kid in Toy R' Us, thought it looked kickass, me and my friend rented it multiple times, at this point I guess it was semi rare, because I couldn't find it in my city, so when I was visiting my Gparents up north, I finally got it at funcoland for like $50.
That was the happiest moment of my life :bouncy:
Not really, but still a very joyous time. BUT YEAH, I recommend Chrono Trigger.

For a kid a game called Okage Shadow King for the PS2 might be a pretty good RPG. I though it was decent and it only costs $7.00

I was reminded of Illusion of Gaia from another thread. Loved that game. I haven't played it in many years so maybe it wasn't as good as I remember, but still I liked it back when I was kid.
