View Full Version : A sad day indeed...

There I was, playing some GameCube tonight when all of a sudden my system started crashing with disc read error after disc read error... the audio had been crapping out over the past couple days and loads would sometimes stagger, but this was clearly evidence of the final gasps of my platinum 'Cube.
So I guess it's official... after over three years of intense gaming bliss, my original GameCube is dead. Oh, the drunken nights spent with the lads and Smash Bros! Oh, the Chinese take-away and up-till-dawn Mario Party weekends! Oh, the tireless evenings spent acid dropping and grinding in the Tony Hawk games! Oh, the prize fighters and the infinite bloody championships won in Fight Night Round 2!
Hare, hare, 65+ hours of Paper Mario!! Hare, hare, Wind Waker joy!! Hare, hare, Resident Evil 4!! Hare, hare, underappreciated Wario World and your 20+ hours of glee!! Thank you, Namco, for Donkey Konga 1 & 2 and your Tales of Symphonia! Thank you, Capcom, for your zombies and Mega Man! Thank you, Nintendo, for your Jungle Beat and your effervescent Pikmin! Thank you, Nintendo, for letting Mario wear sunglasses and spray water on piantas!
Oh, fare thee well, trusted companion of countless hours of fun... Fare thee well.
...Good thing I had a brand new black 'Cube in the closet from the $99 MP7 bundle last holiday season! I'm back up and runnin'!!

It really is a fun ass system. I hope mine doesn't start crapping out as my xbox has been in the past while since I've gotten back on Live.

Damn man... that sucks.:-( I guess I should be thankful for mine. It's a launch system and to date, I've only gotten 3 disc read errors even though I've played it more than any other system.

I dread the day when this happens to mine, because you can't just go out and buy a new Cube with component outputs. What a pain in the ass that Nintendo removed that...

Couldn't you just keep the cables from your old system and hook them into the new one?

Nintendo decided to be cheap and remove the connector from the back. You can ask for a refurbished old model though if you send your new one in. I don't think it's worth it though since the Wii will play GCN games anyway.

Exactly. And since I don't plan on buying a Wii, I'd be forced to track down an old (hopefully working) model with component out. Why didn't I have the smarts to buy 2 Cubes?

Ahh, now that would make sense.
I mean short of doing some modifying to the cables, your only other option would be to track down an older model, that sucks.

Thanks, guys, for making the death of my first GameCube so meaningful for me. Hopefully we'll all be friends when the new one finally dies in a couple of years so we can do this all over again.

You're obviously not a beat poet or familiar with 50s & 60s krishna hilarity.
Anyway, my new black GameCube is serving me well. I'll obviously be buying a Wii, it's just a question of when and how cheap.

I say you put it in its original box and bury it in your back yard.

I say get a few bucks off of it and sell your broken one on eBay. Broken GameCubes can be put to good use for parts.
I thought there was a way to fix the GCN DRE (very rare might I add) like there is for the PS2 DRE.

...Nintendo products die?
Unfortunately, disc-based systems do... if Nintendo had stuck with cartridges, my GameCube would be humming along through the year 2030. Oh well. Can't argue with progress, right?

And if Nintendo stayed with karts they would have about 5% of the 3rd party support as they do now.

I wonder if we'll see the same backwards compatability headaches with the Wii that Xbox 360 owners are experiencing right now. Knowing Nintendo, the masters of backwards compatability (in the portable arena, anyway), I'm not too worried. But it's something to think about.
And incidentally, cart systems are not necessarily all that. Yes, solid state is going to be inherently more durable than fragile disc/laser based systems, but I think we all had an NES die on us at some point, or at least had to blow on the contacts a few times.

could someone tell me what this "component out" thing is? i've been browsing this thread and i still don't know what it is, pictures would be much appreciated, and what happens if it DOES have the component out? btw i've had my gc for at least 3 yrs, and when i play PoP it lags a bit, is this just the game (which is completely NEW) or is my gcn on its last set of legs ?

Chances are, if you don't know what component cables are, you probably couldn't use them anyway.
But to answer your question, component cables are a high-end digital way to carry video content. They are also the only way to play GC games (the ones that support it, anyway) in progressive scan (a smoother refresh rate than the interlaced video picture produced by standard definition TVs) and/or a 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio. To take advantage of either of these, you would need a High Definition TV (HDTV) or possibly EDTV (Enhanced Definition) with component inputs. Some standard definition TVs have these inputs (you'll recognize them as red, green, and blue ports on the back of your set), but the picture improvement on such a set is negligble compared to connecting via S-VHS.
Older GameCubes (those produced in the first year or two of its life) included a port that allowed you to connect the system via a proprietary (only available directly from Nintendo) component cable. Later iterations of the console omitted this port, basically because Nintendo got cheap and figured few people were using it and few developers were supporting it. Nevertheless, there are a few titles that do take advantage of these high-end capabilities, including several recent titles. If you're interested in which titles support progressive scan, 16:9, and Dolby Pro Logic II, there's an excellent list available on the Audio Video Science forums (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=649817).
Hope that helps. Now someone else will have to explain DVI, HDMI, toslink/optical, and digital coax. I'm tired.

ooooh alright, that was enlightening, well i don't really care much for the looks being a bit better, not to mention grabbing the cables which i heard cost a good chunk of green

I got them for $5 used at GameStop, but that was about two years ago. ;)
Incidentally, while it will only look "a bit" better on a regular TV, the picture improvement on an HD set is substantial and quite stunning, IMO.
Are you using S-VHS or composite (i.e. "the yellow one") hookups? S-VHS offers a HUGE improvement over composite on all sets.

Scobie: Is your backup Cube equipped with the component out?
Sorry for the uber-delay on the reply here... been busy and haven't had time to worm through CAG.com as much as I'd like. Anyway, no, my back-up 'Cube is one of the new rev's w/o component out.
It doesn't bother me since I never used it. A good friend of mine used to have his going into a computer monitor and it was pretty nice, but I could never be bothered.
