What is the difference between Empires, Xtreme Legends, and the traditional Dynasty Warriors line?

I'm not sure about Empires, but Xtreme Legends are generally just like an expansion. Like DWXL4 is DW4 with just a few more people...
They're big fans of... quintuple dipping.

Dynasty Warriors is the first one to come out, it is you against 100s of enemies with a small emphasis on strategy. Xtreme Legends is an expansion with new characters and levels and weapons. Empires is like Dynasty Warriors but you pick which battle you are going to fight.
