Well I've seen numerous pictures online prior to the DSLite's launch and they were all of DS vs DSLite to show how brighter and compact the DSL is.
Now I love my DS lite very much and think it's absolutley amazing!
But last nite I registed online (sigh again) with Mario Kart and I got my brothers DS (he has a phat ds) because I was going to add his friend code into mine and vice versa..
But putting them next to each other, his DS looks like TOTAL SHIT!! I even set MY DS on the lowest light setting and it STILL was brighter!
It just kinda gets me mad that before the DSLite and all we knew was Phat DS and we all thought how GREAT the DS was..and I look back and I'm like "...ew? What the hell? How did I ever see the screen??"
I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about. Does anyone feel the same way, or know what I'm talking about??
In a way, I'm kinda "nervous" because I don't want 2007 or 8 to roll up and there's an even MORE upgraded version of the DS. I know there will be more colors coming out, and that's fine.. But makes me think and wonder if somehow they are gonna make the DSLite look like shit the way DSL makes Phat DS look like garbage ;( (Of course, thats all IMO)

Look at it this way. The GBA went through three iterations:
-GBA
-GBASP
-GBASP(backlit) & Micro (I lump these two together because they both provided new screen tech but the micro was functionally identical)
Its not like they revised the thing as much as the original GB, and I doubt they'll touch the DS again after this. There really isn't anything left to change, is there?

True, but who knows what they could add.
I don't know if I personally count the Micro as an upgrade. Really didn't do much.. just made it smaller. More portable yes, but that's it.

I own a Powerbook, and the MacBooks are now faster and can run XP...
Guess I shouldn't have bought a laptop until the best one ever came out!

Dude... that's just how technology is, get used it.
I agree that the DSL makes the DS look... unbareable (though the DS's speakers are hella better). But, we all knew it was coming. And chances are there's still another upgrade waiting to happen as this revision came rather quickly. I'm guessing maybe bigger screens and possibly built in media capabilities.

They could make it with a built-in tuner, or with built-in Windows-like software to let you surf the web. I'd absolutely love to have internet access on my DS. They could also release one that can hook up the top screen to your TV.
Finally, they could come out with one that is compatible with Gameboy in addition to GBA games, or a dual-mode dual-screen that allows them to include DS "Bonuses" in future GBA games, so when you play...Metroid Zero part 2 someday if you stick that cart in your DS you get a little touch-screen bonus of some sorts.

My friend bought a fat DS a week before the lite came out for $130 new. I tried telling him he was stupid, but his parents are rich, and he's a dumbass, so he didn't care. I brought my new lite over to his house, we compared screens and the old DS looked like total garbage. It was so much harder to see.
He still says he's "happy with his purchase." I hate when people do that. They know they screwed up but don't want to admit it. I guess he just likes having things that are inferior.

So how do you adjust the brightness on the DSL?

After you hit "touch to continue" and the screen where you choose the game, or picto chat or GBA or Download Play.. the little sun at the bottom. You can hit it 4 times for 4 different levels of brightness.

This has been going on since the beginning of time. When Grok saw how much brighter and longer Korg's torch burned since he was using tar (fuel) on it as opposed to just burning the stick. It's all in the name of technology. Of course with this Korg also burned his arm when that burning tar fell on him. Such is the downside of being an early adopter.
As far as what can they do with the DSLite to improve it? I still think thinner would be better. Not to mention a higher resolution screen, less of a gap between the two screens to make a viable vertical screen, an analog stick, memory stick compatibility, the list is endless.

So how do you adjust the brightness on the DSL?
It kind of sucks because you can't do it in game. Once you turn it on and you're in the "menu" section, look in the bottom left hand corner and you'll see a little sun. Touch that and it will change the brightness.

Doesn't bother me. They probably couldn't get the screens this bright with decent battery lite 2+ years a go when they were developing the DS.
Now they can and they put out a superior system for people who want to upgrade.
I enjoyed the hell out of my DS from Nov 2004 to June 2006, and was happy to pay the $130 to upgrade. No regrets at all for either purchase.
As for future upgrade, I don't think there is anything else they could do to get me to buy again (barring just needing a replacement.
The brightest setting is already too bright for any of the lighting conditions I play in (use it on level 3) and I don't care much about looks and style changes.

So how do you adjust the brightness on the DSL?
You say brighter into the mic and it adjusts. Sometimes you need to say it loudly and slowly while rubbing your belly and buttocks.

They could also make a DS with cell phone capabilities...
Dear God no.
It kind of sucks because you can't do it [adjust brightness] in game.
Agreed. Although I guess if they had added a hardware switch for it, it would have just added something else to detract from the sleek case. The only time this would really be a bother is if you have a demo loaded - no way to get to the brightness adjusting screen w/o resetting and losing the demo.
As have been mentioned bigger screens or the screens closer together would be slick upgrades.
They could also add some new features to the built-in software, like maybe some bonus games. Adding the Opera browser to any future redesign seems like a no-brainer. Unless cost is a factor there of course - still if Opera is smart they'd jump at the chance to have that kind of impact on every DS owner.
I doubt we'll see a release with an analog stick as then some games would be barely playable on the old models. And it already has the touch screen for analog input. But I guess you never know. Same reason why I'd be really surprised if Sony released a PSP with a 2nd nub.

I bought a DS at launch, and it still works fine. My roommate is addicted to brain age and I'm moving out soon. She offered me $80 for my DS, so looks like I can upgrade to the lite. I wasn't even going to bother, but for a few more dollars over the price of a game, I can get a better picture and sleeker design. I wouldn't really worry about the next design of the DS. It wont be coming for a long time you will be missing out on tons of great gaming in between that time if you didn't have the lite. Even if the next design is sooo much better, unless I can upgrade for $50 or less I probably wont bother.
Reggie said we can expect more redesigns in the future. So yes, there will be a better one.

I think nintendo knew that everyone who bought the original would never go outside with one, based on its ugliness and size. Which is why they didn't bother putting in a brighter screen.
Well, I'm going avoid your (OP's) problem by not buying a Lite and not looking at one any time soon. I still have a "phat" DS and it is just fine. I see no need for a new one. Now, if I actually SAW a new one (and not just in pictures which I obviously have seen) then I might feel differently. If I don't though, meh, I'm fine with my DS.
I'll either wait for a new color/bundle (perhaps Christmas - gold or green Zelda bundle - eh, Nintendo?) or just wait till the next version that will make the DS Lite look like crap :D.
If the speaker issue is really noticeable then that makes me feel better about my old DS. Sure, I could see a brighter screen being nice, but oh well.
There you go, sir.
Actually, Nintendo did improve on their first update, so it wont just be a different one, but also most likely a better one.
