Crazy Train would be win.
However, they do have Freebird, and The D. (Almost definately gonna be either Tribute, Wonderboy or something new. Tribute would rock.) It really looks like now that they know it'll sell, they're gonna pull an anti-Konami and actually pour money into getting awesome licenses.
That and Tool....@.@ Anymore awesome and my brain just might explode.

I'm glad AC/DC is in it, but I'd rather see something from the Bon Scott era.. like Rocker, Whole Lotta Rosie, Problem Child, or Let There be Rock. Then again.. many other Bon Scott songs would get the game a different ESRB rating :)

'smuch as I like them, there are far better punk rock bands to take songs from than Descendents. Looking at it from a GH player perspective, I could see "Kabuki Girl" being a song, but other than that, there are very few seemingly appropriate songs for it.
Now, if you wanted someone in the same vain, but with better guitar playing, Black Flag would be a shoe-in thanks to Greg Ginn.
I could care less if they include Tool, because I think they're massively overrated and a dreadful band. But, I do know they're massively popular, so if that's what America wants, that's what America gets.
I also wanna slap Buckethead in the fucking cranium. He's so obsessed with his gimmick he makes professional wrestlers look normal by comparison. Nevertheless, many people do like him. Just don't include him, or any other living person for that matter, as a player model.
I want to see more of the rockabilly/psychobilly selection. An older Game Informer had preliminary drawings of new character models, and they had this tall, slim pompadour'd motherfucker lookin' primed to be the 'rockabilly' GH player. The only song I've seen thus far is The Reverend Horton Heat. I'd like to see what they add to that list.

I could also give a very long list of Led Zep songs that would be great (In My Time of Dying would be great), but there's no way that would happen (the only occurance of a Led Zep song being licensed is to Cadillac). I think some pre-death-of-Duane Allman Brothers would be nice too.

Ugh. Freebird.
Oh, blow it out your ass.
It's "Guitar Hero." There are assuredly notoriously cheesy songs. Not liek Yngwie Malmsteen cheesy, but "this will sell the game" cheesy.
Great. Now we've merged the pretentious music asshole with the pretentious gaming asshole.
That having been said, I do agree with you about the song.
*
[Crowdmember yells out "Freebird"]
"Please quit yellin' that. It's not funny, it's not clever; it's stupid, it's repetitive. Why the fuck would you continue to yell that? I'm serious.
[Crowdmember yells out "Kevin Matthews"]
Okay, Kevin Matthews. What does that mean now? [voice slowly rising] Now what does it mean? I understand where it comes from, so do you. Now what does it all mean? What is the culmination of yelling that?
[Crowdmember yells out "Jimmy Shorts"]
Jimmy Shorts. He's not here. He's not gonna be here, now what? Now where are we? [voice rises faster Hicks get's down on one knee and speaks directly to audience member] We're here with you interrupting me again, you fucking idiot! That's ... you see where we're at? We're here at the same point again, where you, the fucking peon masses, can once again ruin anyone who tries to do anything because you don't know how to do it on your own! [shouting] That's where we're fuckin' at! Once again, the useless wastes of fucking flesh that has ruined everything good in this goddamn world! That's where we're at! [Hicks lunges toward another section of the audience, almost completely horizontal and on the ground bellows] Hitler had the right idea, he was just an underachiever!
[Runs over to hecklers and screams directly to them]Kill 'em all, Adolf, all of 'em! Jew, Mexican, American, white, kill 'em all! Start over, the experiment didn't work!
[despairingly -- now Hicks is crouched over a chair and directing his energies toward the other section again.] Rain forty days, please fuckin' rain to wash these turds off my fucking life! Wash these human wastes of flesh and bone off this planet! I pray to you, God, to kill these fucking people!
[Crowdmember yells out "Freebird" again]
[utterly deflated] Freebird. [Hicks drops to the floor, mike in hand]
[Hicks sits up]
And in the beginning there was the word "Freebird" and "Freebird" would be yelled throughout the centuries. "Freebird" The mantra of the moron!
[Hicks is on his knees now]
"Freebird", "Freebird", "Freebird", "Freebird" If we keep yelling this, one day we'll be funny, Keep doing it. "Freebird", "Freebird", "Freebird", "Freebird" We will sit at the feet of Kevin Matthews "Freebird", "Freebird", "Freebird"
[audience joins in]
"Free-" I'm feeling enlightened! "Freebird" Oh how holy.
[Hicks gets up]
"Well, I don't think this is going to be a "get-laid" set for me
[dusts dirt off of suit]
so uh,
[laughter]
Well, Bill, good guess. But I'm not leavin', fuckers. As I said...

Freebird's on ok song. I certainly think there are far better songs out there (far, FAR better), but I don't hate it because everyone else loves it, either. *shrugs*
Tool, on the other hand...[I]ugh[I].
Anyway, Iron Maiden's great, and Tenacious D is an odd choice, but I think it'll be a lot of fun. Now, where's my thrashy Metallica?

None of the songs in the OP have been confirmed, but a few new tracks have been announced for GHII:
Stone Temple Pilots - "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart"
Anthrax - "Madhouse"
Motley Crue - "Shout at the Devil"
More news on the new songs:
The three newly-announced tracks are covers of Stone Temple Pilots' "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart, Anthrax's "Madhouse" and Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil". "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" is taken from STP's third major-label release "Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop" and features a bevy of muted chords strummed quickly throughout its verses, making for a fast-paced play. "Madhouse" comes from Anthrax's 1985 release, "Spreading the Disease", and is a great example of Scott Ian's grinding guitar work. The Crue's "Shout at the Devil" appeared on the band's 1983 release of the same name and gives hair metal a proper showing in RedOctane and Harmonix's sequel.

Not that you had anything to do with the game, but, y'know, being the one who divulged the information - like what happens to the tobacco company employee who unknowingly assumes the CEO knows tobacco kills you.

Unless the band is willing to lend Harmonix the original recording of the track, they have to cover it. Supposedly, GHII will have a lot of original recordings for the game since bands have seen how popular the game is and are willing to help out. I've never really had any problem with the covers on GH, so it doesn't really bother me.
As for the text, I just copying over from the posting in the official forming, so I'll see what I can do.

I was thinking about how the cover band sometimes sucks, which got me thinking...Why doesn't RedOctane have open auditions for cover bands for the songs themselves?
Seems like a good idea to me. It could get the band a little exposure in what is sure to be a big seller.
Then we could find bands that devote themselves to covering the big name bands and maybe giving us a truer sound.
I dunno. Just a thought.

It's more complicated than just picking the winner out of a hat, as you'd have a ton of entries per song for the dozens they'll have in the game. Just leave it to the professionals they use rather than dealing with dozens of cover bands and this whole process that they'd have to go through.

I'll feel kind of bad not using the original controller, but mine's in seriously poor condition now. It's ALMOST unplayable, so I think I need a new one. Ah well, Cherry Red it is (and if they announce a special version of THAT down the road, I'm going to lose it).

Oh yeah, Strell, regarding your little beef with the covers being off for some of the songs, they kind of explain that in this feature, as well.
But as fanatical as Henderson and Wavegroup are about capturing each song's sound--right down to maintaining a database of soundalike vocalists for every famous lead singer--it's a little-known fact that these tunes suffer a small degree of hi-fi infidelity. "Some bands don't want to be emulated perfectly," explains Tam. "It's just in our contracts [with them]."

Regarding Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida, I don't think there's any way that could be the long song alluded to, at least in the version I have. It goes over 6 minutes without a single guitar (from about 6:30 to past 12:30), and then even after that it's just guitar noise for awhile, not really playing. Maybe they could include a hugely modified version, but I kind of doubt it.

I'm hoping they unleash more rockabilly/psychobilly before release. They added a "psychobilly" character, so they should have more than just one Reverend tune. I'm hoping for something lesser known, like Demented Are Go, but suspect we'll see something like Nekromantix or (more likely) Social Distortion. Granted, I really really like SD, but they're musically far too simple to think of as translating into fun in this game.

So, I just had a new experience with GH1 that I felt like relating, and I don't feel like necroposting the old thread.
I was playing and usually I play pretty competitively. Save the star power until the super long thread of double notes, spam the whammy hell out of long star notes, etc etc. I played my last song of the night and decided to just fuck around. I played Unsung Expert, which I have been practicing over and over as I keep hearing rumors of a GH1 tourney happening soon. But, instead of going competitive hardcore on it, I started headbanging. And not looking at the screen, just playing by ear. I still whipped the crap out of it (lost about 70k points, but still 5 star), but it kinda, like, transcended just me playing alone in my living room at 2 in the morning. It was so much more fun than my typical routine.
I'm tired and light headed, and I have never had more fun with this thing than I just did. It was awesome.

Harmonix is joining MTV, but this is a good thing. They put talent first, and aren't screwing up a company that works well. The staff is unchanged, we're not moving, we're not changing our product development plans.
We will continue to work on Guitar Hero, but now have the marketing might of MTV to help us achieve our initial goal: to allow everyone to experience the joy a musician feels performing music.
They aren't changing a thing at Harmonix, they're just getting more marketing and a cut of ze moneys. Don't panic.

Not exactly sure how accurate I'll be with the bands for each song since no band names were given in the video, but from what I can guess/find:
Monkey Wrench - Foo Fighters
Woman - Wolfmother
Stop - Jane's Addiction or Jimi Hendrix(Really could be either one)
Search and Destroy - Iggy and the Stooges or Red Hot Chili Peppers
Mother - Danzig(or Pink Floyd, but I doubt it)
Girlfriend - The Darkness or Matthew Sweet
Killing In The Name Of - Rage Against The Machine
Rock This Town - Stray Cats
Freya - The Sword?
Bad Reputation - Thin Lizzy or Joan Jett
Cherry Pie - Warrant(Says "not in yet" next to the title video, so may not be in final game)

I dunno - the Thin Lizzy song is certainly no "Guitar Slacker." Is it a moderately well-known hit of theirs? If not, that eliminates that as a choice; if it is, it sure could be. I wouldn't mind Phil Lynett and company, but still have a preference for Joan Jett.

It is on their Best of album, so I'd guess it is somewhat known. I kinda doubt there are gonna be nearly as many people familiar with it though as the Joan Jett song, though. I guess we'll see soon enough which it is, either one will make a great addition to the song list

I was just at my local super market getting some milk and they had the November OPMs already out. The GH2 demo is in there. I picked it up and then I realized that it was $10. Fuck that. I'll just wait and hope that Playstation Underground sends me one in the mail.

I just got the demo today, too. Only paid $5 for it since I had a gift certificate for the book store I got it from. I've only been able to beat Shout at the Devil and You Really Got Me on hard so far, but I'm slowly getting further on YYZ(which is proving to be too damn fun even if I can't beat it) and Strutter(I just can't seem to get the beginning down). Now I really want the full game just for the practice mode, which will hopefully help me move on from hard onto expert

After playing the demo all night, I'm starting to get a little worried. The reason GH was so awesome is because I started at medium and worked my way up to expert. It took a few months, but I got a great sense of accomplishment. I'm hoping GHII isn't too easy, as I can pass pretty much anything on expert without much effort. 55 songs is a lot, but will it be enough?

The thing is, these songs aren't in sets that increase by difficulty like the Career mode in GH, so taking these four as an example of how the final 50 will be is just jumping the gun. If this (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3154218) is to be believed, those are the earlier/easier songs that the game has to offer, though that list just misses several songs like Freebird and YYZ.
As for you being able to beat them easily on expert, screw you. :bomb: I can't even get past them on hard, though it's not like I could get past the first set on the original either. Damn that orange button and the fast reflexes needed to beat them. Damn them to hell. It's too bad that they couldn't get the E3 demo, which had Primus, KISS, Sabbath, Van Halen, Drist, Rush, and a few others along with co-op. More is better, but something is better than nothing at all.

Here's my dilemma. My brother is going to give me his PS2. Pretty much the only reason I wanted it was to play Guitar Hero. Now that they've announced it for the wii, which is a console I'm definitely going to get, do I still buy it for the PS2? I've waited this long, why not wait later? I really don't want to invest in the game for the PS2, then turn around and buy another guitar for the wii. I'd much rather have two guitars that work on one system. What should I do?

Well, you have no idea when a Wii version is even coming out, which makes waiting kinda dumb... since it could be a whole year. Second, there's no guarantee that GH1 will be out on the Wii so at least you know you'll be able to play that with the PS2.

I managed to beat Hard and most of Expert on GH1 without learning how to do them :( I basically just saved up all my star power for the solos and only hit like every 8th note or so, which isn't too satisfying.

I haven't made the leap to Expert yet (fuck you Cowboys from Hell!) but I could never get HOPOs to register for crap. From what I have read, strumming a note in GH1 is fairly lenient on the timing. If you are a little early or late, it will still count. HOPOs, OTOH, are extremely sensitive to the point that you almost have to hit them with perfect timing.
From what I have seen with the demo, and reading other impressions, the HOPOs work just like strumming the notes now. You can be a little bit off and still nail them.
BTW, the demo works with HDLoader if you happen to use that. Makes it nice to not have to put the demo disc in to play it.

Anyway, HOLY CRAP! I am so looking forward to this game!
"Shout at the Devil" is mostly easily, reminiscint of songs in the higher parts of the original GH playlist.
"You Really Got Me" is quite a bit more difficult, with a ridiculous Van Halen solo, and very fun.
"Strutter" is mostly easily, with just a few tricky chords here and there. Three-finger chords are going to be scary on tougher songs.
"YYZ" is pretty fun, but my gosh, it's insane. I can get through it without any trouble, but I certainly can't play more than a few notes without screwing up. I'm hoping for more songs like this. More challenge = more fun.
And, for the two of you who actually like playing this with a PS2 controller, you can. All you have to do is pause in the middle of a song and switch it out. It plays just like it did on GH.

It's looking like it also won't work with the TAC Flying V or any other 3rd party guitar controller, only Red Octane's SGs. It's still not entirely clear if that's just for the demo or the full game too, but it might be wise, if you were looking at getting one, to hold off until the game comes out and it's known for sure to work or not.

Bass is only available in the co-op mode, and only for the second player. However, on Strutter, instead of it being 1P Lead / 2P Bass, it'll be 1P Rhythm / 2P Lead.
Oh boo. I s'pose this can't be done w/ 1 Guitar and 1 controller, then.

I can't believe they added a song by The Sword, that's awesome! Wish it was "Iron Swan" instead of "Freya" but still, sweet news!
Where's Trivium? I think they should be in the running for Guitar Hero 3.

I have to say I was disappointed when I saw the song Search and Destroy wasn't the Metallica song. :-( At least we still have plenty of bands to look forward to seeing in the sequel when it comes next year.
Metallica's song is called "Seek and Destroy" not "Search and Destroy"

Crap, I only have one guitar and I don't really have anyone else to play with. I better be able to play the bass parts, at least in Quick Play mode.

I find it hard to believe that they would have a hard time getting Maiden in the game. I mean, their music has been in other games, and the guys in Iron Maiden have always come off as really down-to-earth guys that put their fans first.
We certainly know that it wouldn't be because Harmonix didn't try. Marcus Henderson is on one of the song committees and he's a huge Iron Maiden fan.
EDIT: Nevermind (http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=7132)
In an interview with they creators they basically said that of course they thought of all the obvious big bands, and that if it's not in the game, it's because they weren't able to get the rights. They didn't mention anyone specifically, but you gotta think it includes AC/DC, Zep, Maiden, Metallica, etc.

The bonus tracks are supposed to be from larger bands this time around, so perhaps my hopes for Maiden, Dragonforce, Tool, Europe's The Final Countdown will be satisfied.
Sorry to say, but Dragonforce has been confirmed to NOT be in the game: Read the post by Grendel Khan (http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=932565&topic=30760732&page=1), he's verified as a Harmonix employee.

So wait, you can't pick your part on something like Quick Play? I know they said you can't make a bass playing Career save or anything, but what about singleplayer bass and rhythm parts? I thought it had it?
As far as the Demo is concerned, no. While it might be possible in full retail, no one's sure yet.

Aww come on, Trivium isn't that bad. Matt has improved his vocals and the guitar playing is only getting better.
That video is funny though.

...fuck. #-o You're right. No wonder I couldn't find the song anywhere. Thanks for the correction.

Heh...whoops. Can't believe I did that.
Anyway, I'll pose a question to you all: how would you feel if a "major" song made it into the bonus tracks, but as a cover another indy band did?

I don't see it happening, as it doesn't circumvent the licensing issues. In the EGM cover story last month, they discussed what a pain in the ass David Lee Roth was in trying to license a Van Halen tune (they point out that Van Hagar doesn't exist in their world). So, they licensed "You Really Got Me" (by the Kinks?) and did it in the Van Halen way.
Van Halen gets no dolla. The Kinks do. That's why I don't think you'll see a Metallica tune, or something similar.

Looks like there isn't going to be any Tool either :-(
From the Guitar Hero forums (http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=7127&p=10):
Maiden was mostly confirmed - BMG blocked at the end. We talked to Tool early on and thought they were a slam dunk. They disappeared on us but ended up on tour. AFK
We didn't hold songs. Industrial spies broke in and stole pieces of the set list in order to appease rabid fans of the game. In the end the biggest songs got leaked too early and AGAINST DESIGN. Early on at E3 those were the only songs that we had confirmed at the time and we had to show something.
It sucks to see that Maiden would have been in too if it weren't for BMG :bomb:
Fuck you, BMG

People on the GH forums were expressing disappointment that the last two songs revealed were not huge name bands, and accused RO and Harmonix of tantalizing them with rumors of Maiden and Tool and then letting them down. Which is totally unfair and unappreciative of the awesome song list that was included in GH2.
