I was thinking about getting age of empires for ds tomorrow. Any impressions from cags as whether this is a good idea or no?

Well, it all depends on what kind of games you like. It's an excellent TBS game, simply put. And it's really cool how much real history is worked into the game; but I'm just a history buff.

I like it. But you have to realize it's not a RTS. It's more along the lines of turn based strategy like Advance Wars. Its also heavily dependant on leveling up just like the RTS version. But it moves much slower than AOK on the PC. If thats what your looking for, this might not be for you. I've always maintained that a good RTS can be made on the DS. Like AOK, C&C or Starcraft... what gives??? wasn't there a petition for Blizzard to make one? Warfare Incorporated proved you can do it with the touch screen. a D-Pad, triggers, and a top screen for overview maps would make this platform seem perfect for this. Screen resolution and processor speed would be the only factors I could imagine... Where is it then???

It could be done, but I guess I just get concerned about the real estate problem. You'd have to make the units really tiny, so you'd have to have a damn good graphic designer on the project to be able to make units that were easily distinguishable.
But yeah, it would be great with the touch screen, especially if it can be programmed to draw a box around the units you want to select. I'd buy a Starcraft or Command & Conquer DS.
Speaking of Advance Wars - it's really cool (picked it up last Thursday). After years of wanting to play TBS games on the PC and finally getting into them a few months ago (call it laziness regarding learning all the ins and outs of a game like Civ and X-Com), it's good to see that they've migrated the genre to portables too.
And hell, Advance Wars does a great job of not throwing everything but the kitchen sink at you from the get go. Easy to get into and invites you to keep playing to see how the mechanics get more sophisticated. It's actually more RTS based in game mechanics than standard PC TBS games.

The reviews are very favorable. Biggest issue seems to be that the 3d models take up a lot of real estate, so it can be tough at time to distiguish them.

The repititious attack sequences will wear on you after a while, but if you turn them off, you'll just wonder what happened to your guys... I like it, but for some reason, I haven't been playing it as much as I could be. like my Animal Crossing DS town is all weeded up, and my Nintendog Chico is famished, parched and mangy. VirtuaPeTA would have a field day on me. hahaha.
