I can't believe their stock price has taken such a nose-dive over the past 5 years when PS2 was doing so well. That doesn't bode well for Sony regardless of what the PS3 does because there seem to be other reasons/problems.

Scorch won't be one of those 100 million.
For a while, anyway.

I haven't decided yet if I will get one. As of now, I am taking the wait and see approach.

even though PS2 did so well, Sony as a whole isn't doing too well. From what I understand, their gaming division is their most profitiable. All other areas have not been doing as well as they used to.

Maybe suing your customers isn't the best business plan? (If you don't know what I'm talking about, google 'RIAA' and 'MPAA')

You know, it's eery... when Nintendo was at the top of it's game, Hiroshi Yamauchi said a lot of stupid things. And now that Sony is at the top of its game, Kutaragi, Lincoln and Hairi are saying a lot of stupid things.
Either way, I'm not going to be buying the PS3 anytime soon... I can't afford that much (otherwise, I wouldn't be here:-P). And even if I could, I probably wouldn't care to buy it right away.
But when you think about, even with all the negative feedback Sony seems damn confident about the PS3. There has to be good reason as to why...:-k

Ditto, even if that's the retard SKU. But seeing as launch price is $500/$600 I guess I probably won't be playing PS3 until 2008 or 2009.

Sony has had major problems in the past few years mostly due to the consumer electronics department. PS2 has been a big cash cow for sony while other departments have been hemorraging money. They used to have the largest market share for portable audio devices but Apple tottally whooped thier ass on that (mainly due to sony's insitence on ATRAC3 Propreitary format). In addition they sold thier players at just about or more the cost of an ipod and forced you to convert all music to ATRAC3 for playback on the players.

hemmoraging = bleeding
anywho, as others have said, the PS2 and the Sony Computer Entertainment are the only moneymakers for Sony. They take a bath on the film, music, and electronics divisions.

I'm avoiding the PS3 like the plague. Paying $600 for a game system is aiming for the fat, lazy, girlfriendless, 22+ crowd. I'm dont really ride that train. I have much better things to do with $600 bucks...

Bingo. Sony's covered a lot of their losses with the profitability of their games sector. Even in a best case scenario (they sell loads of PS3s), that will become a loss for at least another year or two. If they can't offset their losses in other departments for a period of time, it's only common sense to sell that stock, and start buying it back once those losses can be absorbed again.

Good advice. I wouldn't touch Sony's stock until at least 2009 if at all. I'm getting a DS before I get any of the next gen consoles. I'll just pick up the early AAA titles on the cheap and play them when I'm done with suddenly ginormous backlog. Even then, the PS3 will be my last system.

Good thing I have scholarship money.....I'll definately get a PS3, someday. Until then, I'll just leech off my friend's PS3 when he gets it.

What bothers me about Sony and the PS3 is how Japanese companies dump all the games I want on to it (MGS4, FFXIII, etc.), which would still be the case if it ends up being inferior hardware to the 360.
It seems like it has to do more with national pride than whether a system is superior or inferior. I'm not saying 360 is better than PS3 or vice-versa, I'm just saying even after the PS3 if the 360 is the superior platform, Japanese companies seem like they are still reluctant to support an American based company.
Anyways, I hope Sony tanks a bit because they make unreliable products chalkful of useless features. I still love my PSP though :)
DS is still more fun though :-P

Playstation is currently THE big brand. If it falters after launch developers will port those games and make future games on the Wii or less likly but possible the Xbox 360. Currently companies are announcing a fair amount of support for the system, but with time that very well may change.

I'm running the hell away from the $600 price tag. I'll pick one up when it gets down to 200 bucks... that is if it has any games that I really want and they are not on the PC or Xbox 360

The best part of this article is the first paragraph:
"As part of a sometimes contentious Sony shareholder meeting in Japan, executive Ken Kutaragi has indicated that the company intends to sell as many as 100 million PS3 consoles over the next several years."
Um, they intend to sell AS MANY AS 100 million. So does Nintendo. So does Microsoft. Each of the three companies intends to sell a billion consoles. But that doesn't mean that they are actually capable of it. Kutaragi just blew a huge cloud of smoke and it made headlines... :P

er PS3's hardware is more advanced, the younger the system, the better the hardware, ps3 > 360's hardware by a year.

I haven't seen anything that makes it superior so far. There is no final spec sheet, and even if a system is superior it doesn't mean it will be tapped for all that potential.

I will buy 10 of them at launch and sell them to crazy Sony fanboys on ebay at $1000 a pop... or maybe I'll just buy a Wii and be happy :)

Odds are that in real world situations regardless of the paper specs the 360 will likely have superior graphics in most instances due to the complex nature of the Cell processor. Its doubtful devs will spend the time to get the full power out of the PS3 due to its complex setup, meaning 360 titles probably will sport similar or better graphics. At least, thats what most expert programmers (Carmack, Newell, etc) have stated - and it makes sense. Devs are just getting to know multicore/multithread and you stick an octopiler in front of them? Good luck.

Well and on top of it it probally will be like this generation where yes there is a difference between the consoles when performing at max, but its not so huge that anyone but a graphics whore will notice very often. If pushed to the limits both systems graphics wont be THAT different.

I figured the price point.......what's keeping me away is all the problems sony and blu-ray are having. I got my ps2 at launch and the dvd player never worked right. There is no way I can let myself by this friggin' thing anytime soon.

I am definetly getting one. The PS2 has provided me more gaming hours of fun than the NES, SNES, N64, and Dreamcast. Mainly because RPGs are so lengthy. And I never had a PSX so I got to play a lot of those RPGs
