My in-laws computer...

Has a Presario with USB 2.0 (hell, it's advertised on the front of it), and it is giving an error message of 'Hi-speed usb device plugged into non hi-speed usb port.' WTF? In the error bubble it points out that none of the USB ports under the 2.0 controller are being currently used...except for the fact that I have the camera and printer plugged into two of the ports. Under devices, it lists three other USB controllers, and four hubs, none of these say 2.0 though.

He doesn't want to upgrade to SP2 (which I think would solve it), and I've tried disabling the other controllers, but that just disables everything. The only other things I know to do is to install a file (880023 or something) or open up the case and see WTF is going on. Being it's a Compaq (I had hoped I'd never have to work on one of these again), I shudder. On top of that, the Sony software that came with the camera doesn't recognize it anymore. I know some drivers are fubar'd somewhere, but I don't know where.

Did you try the other ports? Also was the first port you plugged in the one in the front?

I've tried every single port (4 in back, 2 in front). Also updated the drivers from WinSup, and that didn't work.

Only thing I know to do is have him update to SP2 and see if that works (he really needs to anyways).

Give SP2 a shot.

If not that, reinstall drivers.

It's a Compaq. They are made from the refuse of Hell itself.

Why wouldn't he want to upgrade to SP2?

He says he upgraded once, and it screwed up so he took it off. If you ask me, THAT'S the problem. A driver that updated, and when it was removed all hell broke loose. I've done all I can think of. The mobo shouldn't have shunts for USB 1.1 and 2.0 seperate, so I'll be damned if I'm opening up the spawn of Satan.

I'm so glad I convinced my wife to let me build our computer from scratch. Two years and the only problem I had was a user error.

So fucking true.. when people ask me to fix them, I just say "get a new machine."

Just put SP2 on it and don't tell him, while you at it, fill every megabyte that isnt being used by windows with porn and show his wife why it's not working.

If you really want to piss him off, instal ME on there. I know I'd kill a bitch if they did that to my P3
