Two interesting points:

1) Samsung and Toshiba are working on a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player. That's all well and good, they don't particularly care which succeeds from a business standpoint so they may as well allow for either.

2) Sony and NEC are reportedly working on a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player. Pre-emptive death sentence for BD, just covering their asses, or trying to cash in on any money that HD-DVD makes regardless of the winner?

HDMI, 1080P, blu-ray - HDdvd combo players...does anyone think these formats will be way to confusing for the average consumer?

Dvd seemed to simple. It's your favorite movies, clearer picture, hooked up exactly the same way like your VCR and you can select scenes too! Well, atleast thats how I saw DVDs when they first came out, and I was a little kid then.

Indeed, sean. I think that underlines the importance of settling a format war before going to retail. Most consumers are going to hold off until they know it's safe. And any of them that jump in early will definitely be left with a sour taste in their mouth if theirs is the fromat to fold. Ends up being bad for all parties.

What I don't understand is I heard before that Samsung was making a hybrid player, but that as of now it was not licensed by either Sony or Toshiba (BTW botticus, Toshiba is the head of the HD-DVD camp, so I'm pretty sure they still want HD-DVD to win). Not to mention why is Sony even bothering if Blu-Ray is as superior to HD-DVD in every way like they seem to think it is. Obviously HD-DVD has more legs than most people figured.

Jesus Christ can't they just pick a format and go with it? I'm so sick of all this.

Since I can't quote reply for some reason:

Stuka, I didn't necessarily mean they don't want HD-DVD to win, but I don't think they will lose their shirts if it doesn't. They can simply switch gears and produce a BD player with lesson learned. Not like Sony who is producing the actual format.

Yeah, I think that the next gen video formats are way too confusing and I don't think that either format will catch on due to that and the lack of gimmicks.

As for the hybrid player... I've heard rumblings about this before but I didn't think that anything would actually come out of it... so this is kinda interesting but at the same time, I wouldn't buy it...

we sort of know about this months ago.

Basiclly you got people making the formats they like, and one player will plays them all. this isnt any more confussing than having like 5 kinds of memory cards.
