Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of Square Enix interactive entertainment products in North America, today announced that FINAL FANTASY XII will be available in stores October 31, 2006, exclusively for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system.
In addition, a limited run of the FINAL FANTASY XII Collector's Edition will be available exclusively at GameStop and EB Games stores, as well as through the e-commerce sites GameStop.com and EBgames.com. Housed within special packaging, the bonus DVD offers Japanese and American promotional trailers, in-depth developer interviews, an art gallery and featurettes focusing on highlights of the FINAL FANTASY franchise.
FINAL FANTASY XII, which has sold over 2.4 million units in Japan since its release on March 16, 2006, will retail for a suggested retail price of $49.99 (USD) and $59.99 (USD) for the Collector's Edition.

I'm definitely glad to see the Official release date confirmed. I'll definitely be at EB on 10/31, picking up my Special Edition copy. There's just no way I can miss out on that for sure.:) I never expected Square Enix to release a Special Edition copy, but I guess they decided to. Definitely my most wanted game of the year. Kind of weird the game comes out on Halloween.

Cool. I'll be picking this up when it hits $20 if it gets decent reviews...

Hm, I wonder if "limited run" means another MGS 3 LE debacle?
I will preorder ASAP at Gamestop, I guess.
You can already preorder it, that was quick:

I hate to say it but that's what I'll be doing as well. Since FFVII, I've bought every FF game on launch day besides FFXI and FFX-2. I'll probably get flamed for this but every FF game after FFIX just didn't feel like a FF game. The series definitely lost its roots and strayed away from the great gameplay, memorable characters and spic stories of the old days.
I'll admit though, FFXII looks like it'll be good. The story sounds amazing from the little clips and snippets I've read/heard about.

The companies are both the same, the same thing is on EB's website too.
They are both hyping it up as "Limited quantities"... my spider sense tells me this could be exactly like MGS 3 LE, where no one believed it was really limited and now fetches a premium from a rabid fanbase.
If that's the case, I'll do the same thing I did with MGS 3, grab a regular one to play and keep my LE sealed.

btw, for the haters or skeptics, this game will be awesome. Valkyrie Profile 2 might be better, but this game will still be awesome.

I just preordered it not more than 15 minutes ago while picking up a preorder, so head on over. The game's going to be awesome just from the demo in DQVIII, so I took a shot on preordering it while I was there.

i just mean that so much money has gone into graphics for FF games that the relationships between characters is much paler in comparison to the older games.
Some of this is just me being nostalgic, but really, with all that money, they could hire some better writers and make the relationships more interesting and not so damn trite.
FFX was so predictable - or if not predicatable, totally lame - Yuna and Tidus were damn annoying.
I'm a huge FFVI fanboy, fair enough, but the relations between Celes, Locke, and Cyan were really interesting and revealed a lot of "what ifs," and relativity issues.
Also, Shadow's whole story with Relm and Strago was awesome too. Sure a lot better than "I'm your father and the incarnation of evil" etc. etc.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks FFIX was the last great FF game.:)
I already went ahead and ordered the CE version. I doubt it'll be rare though because the only time something becomes rare is if I don't get it. I'm really hoping that the bonus DVD is something that Square Enix put together (which means it'll be nice) and not something GS/EB made (which means it'll be crap).

I see what you mean...when I play FF3, I'm all "FUCK YOU KEFKA!!!" and get into the story, which i don't usually do with games.
but when i play FFX, i just want every character to be quiet so I can enjoy the gameplay. same with X-2..

I didn't know graphics affected the story so much. I'm sure the same people work on both parts of the game. :-s They've put alot of the work into the gameplay rather than graphics, especially since the game's so different from the previous games in the series. They've even cut down on polygons to put more resources into making the textures much better.

A lack of "strong" characters. Even though Cloud and whatshisfuck from VIII were morally conflicted emo ninny-boys, they could still kick ass. For some reason, Zidane didn't convey that.
The transgender chef lookin' thing was the single most annoying fucking creature in the entirety of the FF universe.
I dunno why it didn't get props. Was it "the next gen" when it came out? I know that FFVIII came out on the same day as the Dreamcast (so let's see if they cry foul in the unlikely event Halo 3 comes out on the PS3's launch), so by the time FFIX came out, and fuck it.
I had a long response planned, but here's your answer:
Final Fantasy IX US release date: 11/13/2000
Playstation 2 US release date: 10/26/2000
That's why. IMO, it was the best FF since VI, though I am having fun with XI. It didn't get credit because it was outdated before it came out, BC or no BC.

I agree. I hate VII, VIII, and X. Since XI is a MMO I haven't played it, but from what I've read about it I doubt I would like it.
I would have to say that IV is the best, with IX close behind and VI in third.
As for the LE I'm not all that impressed with it. I'll just get the normal version and save that $10 for Wii games.

Hell, I liked FFIX primarily due to the system they had going. Each character was still unique yet shared a lot of useful abilities...if you happened to save almost every piece of equipment in the game for later, that is. Quite brilliant, really, and I definitely enjoyed the customization it offered while still letting everyone remain as individuals.
But anyway, I'm giving FFXII a shot in the hopes that the Tactics team finally got off their nut and offered up an excellent story in the vein of Tactics rather than, well, Tactics Advance.

well i liked Zidane and overall the whole cast of IX alot better than 8 - which was actually the most disappointing game ever.
all in all - i just think that something has been lost in trying to convey a sense of the world and the history therein. In old 16 bit games, it was all about applying the right touches at the right time because they just didn't have the technology or space to do it any other way.
another thing about VI was the way that it didn't focus on one male hero - there were a number of equally balanced heroes who's stories all existed seperately and at the same time together - true, Terra was the "main" character but I was just as interested in the others and where they came from etc.
You'd think with the smaller casts and greater technology that they could come up with character designs and stories that weren't as hollow and boring as in X. I mean, the love story between Yuna and Tidus was terrible - that wasn't believable at all - and if you don't think that was important to you, you're kidding yourself.
Things like mini-games and side-stories only work if they feel cohesive with the rest of the fantastical world - it's not how much random shit you put into the game, it's how it all gels together.

face it guys, all the rpg these days are more about graphics and gameplay, SO3, recent suikodens, grandia 3...etc ALL games with horribly mediocore stories, I mute my FFx whenever tidus talks, but it was still a great game.
FFXII from what i heard, is all about random treasure drops, loot runs, customization...etc, you know, stuff from western RPGs like Diablo. The best part of western RPG, combined with best part of eastern RPG, FUCK yea i want this. I can imagine it now, spending hours just doing nothing but loot runs, hunting for rare shit ^_^

I'm guessing you haven't played FFVIII then.
At least I could explore a world map in VIII.
Also, it had a much better final dungeon.
Plus, it had an interesting world with some really entertaining battles and sidequests.
I know FF X had the most high tech graphics, but it was the most linear game in the series, had a boring resolution to a decent plot, barely any exploration and had tons of boring pallette swapped enemies.
I still like the game, I think it's a solid 8/10, but it's the worst FF I've ever played (XI doesn't count, X-2 has better gameplay but a much worse story and cast).

Traken was talking about my comment on FF X which I claimed to be the weakest in the series.
Honestly, it's not as bad as some of the earlier games (I disliked V's job system and bland cast) and even the original (which was great back then, but blows now).
If I had to list them from best to worst I'd choose:
IX
IV and VI
VII
VIII
X
II
V
I
So while I said it was the worst in the series, I meant worst of the recent iterations.

Out of curiousity, why? What don't you like about it? If you want it that badly, you preorder it.

i guess just the xbox360 fiasco and etc. kind of turned me off to it, also i've never pre-ordered before haha
um but i guess my question, probably no one knows, is exactly how rare is the collector's edition? if there's not that many for each store then i probably should pre-order

Unfortunately we're not going to know until it comes out.

Hopefully it won't be on rails ala FFX (the worst game in the series).

FFVIII is an infinitely better game in nearly every aspect.
Back on topic, for any of you who preordered in-store, was there any indication of the Collector's Edition on the reciept? Mine just says "Final Fantasy XII," and the clerk was kind of a dumbass.

When I preordered, the title of the game was cut off so it just said Final Fantasy XII... the clerk told me that it was indeed the CE. It just got cut off because there wasn't enough space.

The only demo is the one that came with DQ8.
