Lotsa luck selling those Manhunt guides on ebay...they're almost as cheap as they are at Best Buy...there certainly are as many...I would love to get my hands on a Max Payne 2 guide...I've got some older guides (Maximo, Crazy Taxi 3) available...

ya, Manhunt must not be that good of a game because they are pretty cheap, even on Ebay.

I wonder how Amazon sells them or if they sell them because they are going for about 10.46.

I don;t get it. Are you just an asshole? Why would you buy so many copies? Perhaps 12 other people would like a penny strategy guide. Are you going to sell these on ebay now?

well, perhaps some. It seems to always happen to me so I am just doing it for a change. I am playing on giving a few to my friends who did not know about this deal but I don't see anything wrong with what I did.

Not to go all academic on you, but that's faulty logic. "The basic idea behind the fallacy is that the fact that most people do X is used as "evidence" to support the action or practice. It is a fallacy because the mere fact that most people do something does not make it correct, moral, justified, or reasonable."

actually Manhunt's not that bad. I really got into the dark overtones and the dread of not knowing what's around the corner. The only reason for a guide is to put a quicker way through the levels so you can get the time bonus really. Plus they list the extras.....

At least they let you price check something. I went to pick up the Prince of Persia guide because I like guides with pictures and it was a great game and I'm like can I get a price check (to double check that it's 1 cent) and the guys like here (points to the back of it) it's $14.99. So I'm like uh ok, try someone else and the guys like rambling about books or something and I'm like whatever and goto counter figuring I'll return it if it's full price (I don't really need the book that bad to spend $15 on it, maybe like $5), luckily it came up a penny then it was a hassle because she called the manager over etc. Pretty annoying.

my opinion on buying multiple guides:

first of all, i don't know how someone ends up with 14 Manhunt guides because every Best Buy I have been to limits purchases of these items to 2 or 3 of a kind

i personally do buy multiple guides when i have the chance because they make great gifts for gamer friends (especially those that aren't attuned to this site)

they also make excellent little prizes when you attend (or have) a link party

buying them for resale is pretty idiotic given the effort involved with listing and shipping with regard to eBay

my two cents

03-06-2004, 12:42 AM
umm just in case it was misunderstood I got 14 manhunt guides with the purpose of trading for other guides and for the purpose of giving them away to fellow visitors of this site. Not for profit. Even if it was for profit where I live Ebgames does not buy them and Gamestop pays 50 cents a guide meaning I would have to spend 2 hours of my time and five dollars in gas to make 2 dollars if by luck whatever best buy even had them. Hardly profitable or worthwhile. Another local video game shop called Mcvan's does pay a couple of dollars for guides when they can use them, which typically is rarely. Regardless my motive was not to hoard but to share. If I can help anyone out with a manhunt guide let me know. Bleh. I hope this eliminates any confusion.

I think you are gull of crap, floormat. You dont get 14 guides to "share" on this site as it costs to ship etc. But nice try.

On the ebay route, i've looked these guides up on ebay (yes, when i first found about about penny guides, i too wanted to make a profit) but most of the time they dont even sell for the .01 listing price.

floormat

You can't please everybody no matter what you do. I was inferring less shipping of course. But with that kind of response I doubt I could give an answer that would quench your position on any level.

After reading for some time on various CAG thread's I was getting the vibe that sharing and deals is what CAG is all about.

MrRhee I think it is, goes into target and picks up 30 copy's of Crazy taxi and 10 copies of TMB at 4.38 or so and he comes onto this site and offers them for price plus shipping. That seems to exemplify everything this site is. Not a single accusation of trying to make a profit just rousing cheers and thanks.

I get a fabulous deal thanks to CAG and offer to share with anyone that wants some as well under the same understood CAG pretense of price + whatever shipping is.

I dunno. You can't win em all as I said but I sure hope I got the right impression of CAG. I would hope that impression is in the minority. I want to continue to help whatever CAG's need help in whatever area is available to me to help. Enough has been said. Just please consider some people are sincere in wanting to help. Thanks for listening.

I went to BB over the weekend and asked a guy (kid really) to check the prices on a few guide. He knew what I was looking for. He told me that some more guides would be pennied out this coming week. But, and this is what got me, he said "I try to buy up all of hte pennied out guides so the company doesn't lose any money on them. I have a car trunk full of guides right now." Huh? I wanted to slap him. How does he keep the company from losing money if he is buying them versus someone else buying them?! What a moron. Oh well, that BB location ididn't have many guides anyway, but the other one in town had a decent selection.

No idea what guides then? I'm expecting they will be getting rid of Jak II, Ratchet & Clank Going Commando, The Hobbit, SOCOM II, maybe a few more soon. Maybe Mario & Luigi and Mario Kart. No clues here people?

I saw on an endcap guides for Jak II, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Metroid: Zero Mission, and True Crime, and they were clearly pulled from the main strategy guide shelf. I'm only speculating that they'll be marked down soon.

Yeah there are plenty of True Crime guides at my BB too, so that's a good candidate. Maybe MOH Rising Sun too, as those don't seem to be moving off the shelves too much.

I checked metriod, the hobbit, true crimes Mario kart double dash at best buy a few days ago but they were all still full price.

I also checked ebgames a week ago and soul caliber II was either 7.50 or 7.99 in case someone can't get it for one cent at best buy and really needs one.

I also checked Toys R Us on Saturday I think and Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party 5, and Mario Golf were all still 14.99.[/url]

Just keep trying them whenever you go to Best Buy. Don't be shy, just ask for a price check. If some employee is dicking you around, go to another and ask. Sooner or later we'll find out which ones drop and when. Thanks to everyone on this thread for all info provided.

Just got back from TRU. I scanned every different guide in the place. They had about 35-40 different. I got 3 for a penny, but I think they might have been covered already. All prima: Devil May Cry, Metroid prime/Fusion(gba) and Mari Kart Super Circuit(gba). TRU waits way longer to penny thier guides since these games are pretty old. All others were still 14.99 with a couple being $7.98.
I scanned the silver cover zelda giude still $14.99. How long has this game been out?? They had like 20 in the store in good shape. The 2 Best Buys in my area don't even have that guide in stock. Is it a TRU exclusive??

Yep, as someone has already said and I posted above, just ask for price checks every time you go to or are near a Best Buy (stop in). For instance, I was there this past weekend getting Rogue Ops for GameCube for $9.99 and checked all the guides they had, but they were all full price. Eventually someone will check and they will have lowered them, and then we all score if that person is part of this community. Do your part for cheapassess all over the country 8)

Hit the goldmine. Found a BB that had about 100 one-cent guides just laying out in the video game section. Bought all of them over the past few days. Have been giving them out to all my friends like it's Christmas.

They have most of the guides listed in this thread. Kept a couple copies of each for myself. The best part was that a good number of these guides were still sealed in plastic.

Judging from what's over there (these guides were not with the full-priced guides), my predictions for guides that will soon be a penny include SOCOM 2, NFS: UG, Wolverine's Revenge, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and at least 4 or 5 others.

Also, don't know if Midnight Club 2 was mentioned in this thread yet, but if if wasn't, it's a penny.

All of the BB employees were shocked at the price, but didn't give me any problems. They even joked about it, asking me if I was sure I had enough money to cover the purchase...

None of the guides were listed as costing one-cent. Just went to BB armed with my list.

Thanks to CAG!

Um, the X2: Wolverine's Revenge guide is already a penny at Best Buy. I got one for that price about a month ago. Also, I don't think I saw it mentioned in this thread, but in addition to the Official Nintendo F-Zero GX guide, I also found the Official Nintendo Donkey Kong Country (GBA) guide for a penny at Circuit City.

(Note - According to the personnel at the TRU in Fort Wayne, Indiana there is a company mandate to ship back all guides that are .01 but they still have 2.00 guides on the shelves though so the truth of this may still be somewhat of a mystery or YMMV) (Update: the gentleman at TRU changed his tune sorta and was saying that they don’t currently happen to have any in stock when I went in recently no longer inferring that they ship them back. I have a feeling that most of these deals are YMMV highly depending on the local staff of various stores)

EB Games

(I spoke with the manager at the Glenbrook mall location in Fort Wayne Indiana and he said that most guides are dropped to a penny around the six-month time frame. He didn’t seem to care as he said just clearing stock for the new stuff. If you have a cool staff might not hurt to ask what if any they have)

(3/2/04 Update: When speaking with the employees at the Jefferson Point EB Games in Fort Wayne Indiana they said that they receive daily updates on their prices and that if you happen to be there the day that the guides are reduced you can get them but other then that they have a company mandate to trash them. This seems to contradict the impression given by the Glenbrook Mall EB Games in Fort Wayne Indiana as he left the impression that they just go fast not are trashed. I was not able to retrieve any kind of list from Jefferson Point location as they claimed to trash them. I will attempt to get a list when I pick up harvest moon: A wonderful life.)

( I attempted to get a list and they said they do it daily and there is no list that they have available. They simple have to check everything one at a time. Also one of the employees at the Glenbrook mall EB admitted he takes them ALL home whenever they drop to a penny for his own collection. Sigh. )

Brute Force = .01

Soul Caliber II = 7.99

This is an awesome thread! My thanks to all who contributed :D . I got my first 2 penny guides today at the Glendale, Arizona BB. The selection is very poor, including the full price guides. In case there are any other Phoenix CAGers here, they still have 2 Max Payne 2 guides, 1 LOTR:ROTK guide, and 1 MOH:RS guide.

Does anyone know if NFS:Underground is a penny?

Prince of Persia
Super Mario Bros. Advance 4
Jedi Academy

I go up there about once a week looking for some. I usually end up leaving every week with at least one guide.

Another great day of finds. Picked up guides for XIII, Secret Weapons Over Normandy, The Hobbit, Everquest, Sims Bustin' Out, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, X2:Wolverine's Revenge, Tron 2.0, and others. The best Best Buys for game guides are the ones that have their guides section separate from their video games section. They tend to have a greater number of left-over one penny guides. Will have to start trading these to get the few remaining guides that I don't have on floormat's list!

I went to BestBuy yesterday and found it kind of odd that the guide for C&C Generals was still full price while the guide for the Zero Hour expansion was indeed a penny. I would've thought that being an older guide that the one for the original game would be a penny too, but surprisingly no.

I can't believe no one posted this. Counter Strike, NFL Fever 2004, Indiana Jones, Madden 2003, Unreal Championship, and Dead to Rights are all a penny at TRU. Took place a few days ago.

Also, as a side note all the free giveaway items at TRU are being clearanced too. Most were priced at extremely high prices before now(the Zelda disc had a $69.99 retail). Both Zelda Bonus Discs are $9.98, t-shirts are mostly $2.98(turtles, sphinx, mortal kombat), tony hawk lithograph is $2.98, and lots more. Many stores won't have this in stock, but they will be getting more of some of it this week as the warehouses are overflowing with it(except the Zelda discs, whats in store now is all they have).

You have to scan them . . . also, different stores have somewhat different prices.

There are 4 Best Buys in the Milwaukee WI area and one in Racine--where I live. I've been in 3 of the Milw. ones and my local.

Of course, the selection varied. But also, some that were a penny in one store were full price elsewhere.

No store had them marked as .01 . . . but 2 years ago I did see them marked . . . when they had price tags they flew off the shelf.

Just got back from Circuit City and I got:

The Ultimate Halo Companion DVD Set w/ Brute Force Betrayals [XBOX] (5x)
F-Zero GX [NGC] (2x)
Donkey Kong Country [GBA] (2x)

Total: $0.09

Customer service sucked. She said she couldn't sell them for $0.01, but she asked her manager, and he said, "If it rings up for a penny, then sell it for a penny." Those were only for the guides. I went back to get the Halo Companion DVD Set w/ Brute Froce Betrayals and went to the cashier. The poor empolyee took 5 minutes to find out the price of the The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition stradegy guide only to come to the price of $14.95. I felt sorry for her, but I still didn't buy it. :P

I brought the F-Zero guide to the cashier at Circuit City the other night. When it scanned at a penny he said something seemed wrong so he got his manager. The manager said that it is scanning wrong and that the price is actually $14.99. I said maybe they were price matching Best Buy since it sells for a penny there as well. I got a blank stare. So, I just went down the road to Best Buy and picked it up there.

What's weird at Best Buy is that some of the older guides still ring up regular price (this may have been mentioned before). For example, I brought up the Versus Books guides for Maximo and Super Mario Advance (yeah, the games that came out 2-3 years ago) and they still scanned at $14.99 :?

I created a guide thread for all stores and trading at

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12584

it would be easier as the main list would always be on the front page of the thread so that it may be easily updated as well as contain pertinent information for traders and new comers. Hope this better helps everyone.
