Yeah, especially if you see it on the website. I asked the old guy in media to check the price of the F-Zero guide last night, and he told me that "If you see the price on the website, it's the price in the store."

And so far, he's been right, except for the cheap-ass DVDplayer I picked up, it was less in store.

Man i just went to the local best buy here in Florida and i saw the F-zero guides so i picked up one to make sure it was a penny and sure enough it was. So i then proceeded to pick up the other 4 left and the cashier calls over another employee (not a manager) and he says "you can only buy 3"....what an asshole!!!...he probably got mad i was snatching them up thanx to my fellow cheapass gamers...lol...I gave him a piece of my mind and ended up leaving with my 3 guides.

I think he wanted to pick them up for hims own use. I told him i did'nt see no damn sign sayin i could only get 3. Moral of the story is.......bring a friend or talk to the manager cause i guess if you are tryin to get a good deal someone always has to try to f$%k it up for you

I picked up a few guides for a penny each, but I noticed something as I was searching for the ones I wanted - BB carries guides by different companies for the same game (i.e. Nintendo's Zelda WW guide and BradyGames' WW guide). Does anyone know if the different guides are still all $.01?

I was doing some thinking, and I thought - is it possible that BB marks down all guides that are either several months old or just plain not selling well? Is there anyone willing to check it out and do a price-check on each guide? I'm too wimpy to walk up to an employee and say, "Hey, can you check the prices on all these guides - I just want to buy all the ones that are a penny", but I'm sure there's at least one person here who wouldn't mind.

I ran to the closest Best Buy after reading this and...I didn't see any penny guides. Mind you...I didn't see any left for F-Zero but I saw some for Ghost Recon and stuff...so I took a few to one of the guys and asked him to scan them. So he put the numbers in the computer and none of them were showing up in the database. I don't know...the guy was a little...slow...so I'm not sure if he just didn't know what he was doing or what. But when you all got them, was it displayed that they were a penny? And were they in a separate area from the other strat guides?

I'd wish my BB had Soul Calibur II and RTCW in stock and for a penny. I just picked up an NCAA 2004 guide along with a few other things, and I only noticed once I got home that it was free! It apparently rang up at $0.00 with a note under it saying "regularly $0.01". Has anyone else had this same experience, either on the NCAA guide or another guide?

The game ending glitches won't let me even if I were so inclined.

This way, I shaft Eidos for all but a penny of the price, and get to see what the hell they were thinking when they made this game.

Not only is the Eidos boycott still on, but as it certainly contains more than a penny's worth of paper,so it's the beginning of the $50 refund they owe me :D

Although granted,no amount will ever be enough to allow me to recover from the horrible trauma of actually having played the game :-(

First four are by Nintendo (I think the LoZ:WW guide by BradyGames is also a penny), SCII is by BradyGames, and Sonic DX is by Prima. For GC, I think the only one you missed was Enter the Matrix. As for GBA, there are Donkey Kong Country and Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (both by Nintendo). Oh yeah, also DBZ: Legacy of Goku 2 (I think). You might also want to see if your BB has Gameshark or Action Replay Vol. 1 codebooks - each are a penny.

It really isn't all that awkward, but to avoid that situation, get an employee in the VG section to do a price check for you. Sometimes there are about 20 employees per customer, sometimes they are scarce. The best way to find one is to look like you don't need any help; this may take practice, but once you get it down, you will have employees stepping out of thin air asking if you need anything.

On occasion, you may find an employee who will not price check for you, claiming that they are all priced as marked. You can pull out one that you know is a penny and say "Just please check this one, and if it is priced as marked, I will leave you alone :twisted: ", or you can just find another employee who knows something about customer service.

Regarding the .01 cent price tags, I've bought guides from BB before with the .01 cents tags on them. They do *sometimes* price them. Seems alot of times thou, it's just priced on a sign behind them, probably costs more money on labels to print individual price tags for them! :P


Also are people still finding these guides in stores? This is quite an old thread for .01 cents merchendise! I'm kind of surprised that anyone would be having much luck this late in the game. Guess sucky unmarked guides will stick around for awhile ;)

Also as far as dealing with checking out with these, I've had cashiers question it too, I bought around 50 guides a year or so ago from BB with the .01 cents deals, a few I resold and a few I included in trades and what not and made available to people who might want them, a few I still have, LOL Anyone need Crazy Taxi 2 DC or Matt Hoffeman Pro BMX PSX :oops:

But I was able to buy them without a whole lot of trouble, I tried to explain to the ppl why it was a penny, then they were like oh, ok!

Toys R Us does the same thing sometimes, and the afor mentioned Gamestop, TRU would not let me buy once before, when I was checking prices an employee asked me if I needed any help, I told him what I was doing, and then he preceeded to take all the .01 guides I had found away from me! :( He told me it was priced a penny so they could throw away, not sell to customers! :roll: It was not a big deal to me thou just some wrestling guides, maybe some Pokemon or something cheesy I just thought he was an ass for being rude to me and trying to keep someone from getting a deal.

So depending on who you talk to, and how you present yourself, sometimes you can get a good deal, sometimes you come away not so happy. :\ Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes the bar eats you.

Probably not anymore, :( This was like over a year ago now. I've still got some from around the same time I purchased from BB.

The most recent deal of sorts I've seen on guides at TRU was the Dragon Warrior VII PSX guides for $6 or $6.50 something another.

But they have had penny guides in the past. Basically it's unloading of old stock, once they are marked down to a penny, they will get no more, they either sell to customers, or they throw out, this is true of the magazines at alot of stores as well. In fact some magazines were priced a penny at TRU during the same time I was trying to buy, I read online other people who picked up guides and magazines like non-current issues of NP, but when I tried to score some they were like NO! :(

I just went to my local TRU and got a Def Jam Vendette guide for a penny. The Dark Cloud 2 guide rang up for $14.99. Maybe not all stores have the same clearance items? I didn't see the other 2 you mentioned. Any others for a penny?

TRU are a bit slow sometimes for releasing price changes, they may have release them thru their systems manually. I'm not certain, but in other jobs I've worked, sometimes they come in phases, but some companies actually count & verfiy the stock before releasing changes, for credit, some try to relabel everything. TRU just went thru a massive clearance deal on their games a few months ago, tons of PC games were repriced, PSX, DC, N64, and newer, but they had everything marked in my store. Some stores, they don't even bother. Probably depends on location and who they have working there whether stuff gets done in a timely manner or not.

But if one location has them on clearance I'd bet they all will before too long.

Can't say for sure. I only know about those four because the cashier let me know about them. There was another big pile of guides that seemed to have been dug out of inventory next to them, but I wasn't about to make him start checking them at 9:08 PM.

I'm sure there are other cheapy guides around, but they're a bitch to find.

I haven't seen any penny guides at Best Buy lately, but I got a small batch of penny guides at Toy R Us today. This actually works better for me since the R Zone at the locations near me have a price scanner mounted on a post, and I can scan as many guides as I want without assistance from an employee. Probably thrown out. Last night I went to BB and picked up strat guides for Rainbow six 3 and Jedi Academy, to double-check if they really were .01, so I went over to an employee who was stacking shelves and had a hand scanner, and asked if she could price check these. She did it and said they were probably 14.99. Then her facial expression changed significantly and I said "Let me guess, a penny?". So after scanning them both, she immediately went over to the strat guides section and yanked every copy of R63 and Jedi Academy off the shelves. So I grabbed the others I remembered from the list like Rebel strike, Counterstrike etc and got out of there before they started pulling all of them off the shelves!
So its likely that at some BBs they are taking them off the shelves, it just depends on whether the employees at your local BB are on the ball about it or not. Move fast, Cheapasses! :D

I scored some DBZ: taiketsu, counterstrike, XIII, conflict: desert storm II, and TMNT guides this way. I think they do, or at least they have the option to. I remember back in '99, Toys R US had damn hundreds of guides for .01. I bought a whole mess and took it to gamestop and the guy was taking them all in until he stumbled upon the 30 or so Tekken 3 guides I had and refused them.

i go to my local best buy and bring to the counter a copy of the guides for payne 2 and persia, the checker rings them up for a penny each, as i am handing the two cents to pay, the general manager rushes over and says they cannot sell these guides to me at this price, they are required to return them to the publisher

naturally, i got annoyed, told him i had waited in line to pay for these items which rang up on their price scanner at one cent each, he didn't budge, at that point i told him that he messed with the wrong ivy-league lawyer and that i would be taking the matter up with best buy corporate

That is annoying. I have never had a problem buying guides. However it would have seemed he could have let you have the guides then direct an employee to remove the others from the shelf rather than causing a fuss.

yeah I went to both today. I was able to pick up the last two MP 2 and the last two PoP guides. I went looking for for all three for me and my buddy. Picked up a bunch of Manhunts though. Got rid of all but the two for us.

Is it just me or does the BB by Jefferson Pointe just suck when it comes to these? They had guides in little racks here and there. I asked the guy working in videogames if they had any .01 guides and he showed me the Manhunts he had sitting up on a shelf. I told him I didn't need it I was looking for the others and walked away. He followed me to the end of the aisle and asked me if I worked for BB. I told him no and asked why. He said he wondered since I asked for the .01 guides he assumed I worked there! I laughed and said no, I saw it on a "message board" on the web. He goes "We're on messages boards? Cool!" I walked away laughing....

I went to my BB yesterday. Got lucky and grabbed the last POP guide for 1 cent. Also grabbed a Clone Wars guide for $2.99. There were appx 10 Clone Wars guides left. Nothing else. The cashier I went thru said 'some guy' came in and bought 40+ guides for 1 cent each. Nice. If that person is reading this post, thanks for sharing the wealth jerkoff.

I wasn't trying to be greedy or nothing and sorry if I caused you any inconvience. I'll gladly give you some if you want any and i'd gladly take any if you have some I could use. Video game stores in Fort Wayne Indiana seem to rarely buy guides so they aren't worth much here as far as that (if you know otherwise please let me know).

If we ever get a CAG meeting or heck i'll met you at the mall or something if you want some. I wanted to get them for CAG'ers and anyone elase who wanted one. I didn't want them to all get snatched up and sit on someones shelf. Bleh Thats enough. If I can be of help let me know.

I went to my BB today and all the guides were marked as 14.99. So I finally worked up the courage to ask some employee. I said, "I heard that when guides have been out for a while you guys drop the price to a penny to get rid of the remaining inventory". The guy looked at me like I was nuts. So I said, "Can you please go scan these and see how much the ring up for?".

He goes off and when he comes back his face was all white like he just saw a ghost. He shook his head yes, and whispered (I guess he didn't want anyone else to hear) that they did ring up for a penny.

I took three into McVan's at Parkwest and the dude said he could only give me store credit. I think we wanted to say never mind but I took the credit. $12 isn't much but add that up and Blam! new game.

I got the last Max Payne 2 from my Best Buy today. The clerk said to me "what are you going to do, ebay this?" I told him I didn't even own the game but I might rent it someday. Actually, now it might be worth buying the $20 used one from Blockbuster and selling/trading the bundle.

They had a bunch of the Star Wars ones but nothing else from this list.

(3/2/04 Update: When speaking with the employees at the Jefferson Point EB Games in Fort Wayne Indiana they said that they receive daily updates on their prices and that if you happen to be there the day that the guides are reduced you can get them but other then that they have a company mandate to trash them. This seems to contridicate the impression given by the Glenbrook Mall EB Games in Fort Wayne Indiana as he left the impression that they just go fast not are trashed. I was not able to retrive any kind of list from Jefferson Point location as they claimed to trash them. I will attempt to get a list when I pick up harvest moon: A wonderful life.)

As far as EB goes, it depends on the location. Some of them will leave them out, some will trash them, and some have employees take them. Also, there are some Gamestops and EBs that give them out free with pre-orders. A full list for EB and Gamestop would be great.

I was looking through the strategy guides at BB a couple of weeks ago, and an employee asked if he could help me find something. I asked if they had any guides on clearance, and he told me they were all full price. I told him that I'd heard there were some on sale, and he insisted that there weren't any. Is there any way of finding out which guides are cheap without pestering an employee relentlessly (I'm kind of a wimp)? Is there anyone in particular I should ask, like a manager or customer service rep, that could verify which guides are a penny with minimal hassel? Or should I just take the guides listed on this thread up to the checkout counter and hope for the best?

I have only acquired four different guides total since I found out about CAG. Silent Hill 3 (sold) F-zero, Soul Caliber II and Manhunt. The only one that I have extra's of is Manhunt. I have 14 extra copies. I am specifically looking to acquire guides for Mario Party 5, Mario golf, mario Kart Double Dash or Disgaea guides but pretty much anything I don't have as well. I will be taking a trip to the Chicagoland area soon hopefully acquiring some more CAG deals I can't get in Fort Wayne.

If you happen to have some extra's that would be great if not i'll gladly give you a few Manhunts if you would like them. But you better believe I am not gonna take a loss on that one cent guide. I want my penny ! kidding = P Let me know if I can help.

Just went to BB in Glendale, Arizona. Not a single penny guide was there. I've looked on other occassions, and have never been successful. I suspect either there's a cheapass hoarder who buys all of them up, or the store throws them out. :cry: Thanks for the tips though, maybe I'll be successful in the future.

I can understand being upset becaus you got screwed before, but one would think they would be much less inclined to do something stupid like this if that was the case.
