tiny screwdriver take it apart and use some rubbing alcohol on the lens. Thats why I am glad I got a pstwo, I don't have to take it apart to clean the lens.

I wouldn't do anything, it's easy enough to destroy the system in repairing it. If you really want to play PS1 games just pick up a cheap ps1 somewhere.

But if you do decide to fiddle there are a couple of good guides on gamefaqs in the ps2 hardware section that should describe how to open the system, clean the lense and adjust the beam power if nessesary.

Guides? GUIDES?

Real men don't use guides!
Did I use a guide when I made this!? http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67685&highlight=greatest

I don't think so!

So just grab a hammer and open that fucker up!

Or you could just put small pieces of tape right next to the hole in the center on the bottom of the disk. I have to do that for CD games too. =(

Just take the sticker off without breaking it - it's not too hard.

I would advise you to be honest about the PS2 when you trade it in - they'll prolly dock you 15 dollars - but hey it's the right thing to do.

Sounds like the disk read error problem to me. Here is a guide on how to fix it. http://mattread.com/archives/2004/01/ps2-disc-read-error-fix/

Be very very careful when you seperate the two peices of the PS2 case. The dvd cable is paperlike and its tucked into a slot on the right side. So when you take the case apart beware of it cause its real easy to unplug and real hard to plug back in. Other than that its pretty easy. I don't know about all the cleaning but that gear thingy is where its at. I suggest doing it a few clicks at a time then testing on all formats. PS2 games read fine with it off a little PS1 games or cdrom ps2 games will give ya disc read errors if its not aligned just perfect.

fuck tradin it in, youll get chump change for it. if your gonna stick with this ps2 for a while, id just crack it open, its not too hard to fix. all i did was open it, clean the inside, take off the tray cover, wipe the lens with a dry q-tip, and reset the lens (push it all the way towards the back of the ps2).

....or you can do what i did. clean it up, add some cheap used games, throw it on ebay (i luckily got someone to use BIN for $110), and use the money to buy a slim ps2. then there ya go, no more worries about gettin DREs.

So I should never buy a console on ebay?

So I should never buy a console on ebay?

No, never.

I'll never know why ppl will pay $40 to $50 for a game that will soon be $20, but then go around and pay close to full-price for a used PS2 or used controller off of ebay. Buy used games and parlay the savings into new hardware - used games often work fine, used hardware seldom does.

Plus both Ebay and paypal couldn't care less about your consumer experience after the money changes hands.
