Dear Microsoft,

Hello! I am here to say I am a XBOX 360 owner, well actually I have owned 2 XBOX 360's, I wanted your new console so bad when It came out I drove 2 hours to a Best Buy that said they had one in and I better hurry. I know I was so excited to get home and hook it up, but low and behold it was broken right out of the box. Needless to say I was more than disappointed considering I bought your 20 GB Hard drive Elite model for $399.

Hey things happen, I understand. I contacted your customer support and they were nice and sent me a box to return my newly broken console in and said I should expect 6-8 weeks before I will get it back. I thought about this and held on to the box for a few days, seven to be exact and I actually found another Best Buy only 20 miles from me that happened to get one in, So I packaged it up and returned the broken one and got home and after a week I finally got to turn it on!

Now I think I have had my console over 2 years and I haven't had the problems many other people have, which I am grateful. There is one thing though that drives me nuts. I am getting dangerously close to filling my original 20 Gigabyte hard drive up. I know you want me to spend my hard earned money to buy movies on demand, games on demand, and little clothes for my Avatar.

I do not understand how you can expect people to pay $149.00 for a 120 GB hard drive just so we can spend more money to buy your things? I mean I have already gone back to college to take a calculus class just to understand Microsoft Points denominations. I guess you see people like me coming, because I even bought a retail box copy of Vista once.

I know the later adopters not only seem to have more stable console's but they already have these bigger hard drives. Also you offered a nice affordable way for Arcade owner's who didn't want to spend the money to get the same 20 GB Hard drive for like 20 bucks we paid $399 bucks for.

How about a little nugget for those of us who have dealt with our old systems running louder than my first car which was a 1983 ford escort. Amazingly It caught on fire when I drove it pretty much the same way I see smoke coming from my 360 every once in a while. Most times I cannot tell whether I have my attic fan blowing in my house or I am playing Dead Space.

Lets have a truce maybe? My Idea is maybe some way to up trade the HD, like I send you $50 dollars and you send me a 120 and I send you back my 20 GB I don't need and hey you can re sell the damn thing for $30 to some cheap parent who bought an Arcade Console.

I also wanted the tell you I just added a Terabyte drive to my personal computer, It was 79 bucks! Maybe at the Microsoft Plant you will release a 1 TB drive for the XBOX 360... at the current cost of $149 per 120... It will only cost roughly $1,236.99.

I know I will accomplish nothing by being a loyal customer, but before I give you money so I have a place to spend more of my money, I thought I would at the very least let you know my feelings.

Sincerely,

Kezmer

Upgrading a HD on the 360 is certainly one of the hidden costs of ownership. But no fault of your own, early adapters probably didn't realize how prohibitively expensive upgrading their HDs would be. And unfortunately, Microsoft, just link Sony and Nintendo, is more interested in making money than friends.

The Bottom Line Rules All!

Considering that Sony was pushing their PS3 heavily in the earlier years, despite the fact that they were severely losing money on it, I really don't think you can lump them in with Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony tried to make the best console at the time and it was affordable for what it was. Nintendo released a console that was a hair more powerful than past gen consoles, but yet 2 times the price. Not to mention the hidden costs of the Wiimote Plus Nunchuk! and the fact that Nintendo first party games haven't gone down in price. With Microsoft, if the reports are in fact true, rushed development and manufacturing of a console that led to a 70~% defect rate out of the factory. Then you add in the costs of Xbox Live (plus whatever MS gets from Ads) and the heavy markup on peripherials like the hard drives and wireless reciever.

I actually forgot about the 99 dollar wireless adapter I bought !
I agree that the hard drives should be much cheaper. They exist almost solely to enable people to purchase things. Anything they can do to encourage that works out in their favor.

No one forced you to buy anything. It's all your fault for paying that much.

I know, i said that in the blog too.

Thanks for a blog that was well written and entertaining. I still play with a 20G HD without any trouble. I just keep cleaning out old game saves and only use it to store a few XBLA titles. Micro$oft didn't get to where they are being the nice guy, they manage to find money in all of their ventures.

I bought my pro about 6 months or so after the system came out. I get DREs a lot when playing and the discs are fine. I have tried to make the thing red ring as that is what it seems to be starting the process of doing. However it just keeps kicking. I have often though about just buying the elite. Hell I could buy the elite for 400 have a new system with an HDMI port and a 120 GB HDD or just buy the 120 HDD for 150 and have the same dame system that is about to die.

sendme- I have thought the same thing, debating this possible upcoming price cut. I would like to have the hdmi port and the bigger HD, and depending how cheap it is, maybe the idea is to just buy a whole new system and have 2 on them in my house. seems a better value to me how you put it.

In the end a full blown 360 that matches the features of the PS3 (wireless network, larger hard drive, HD movie player) is the same price, if not more.

@Bojizzle: That argument was retarded the first time someone made it, and it's still retarded now.

i bought mine near launch, traded it in at gamestop (about 6 months ago) for $120 off the $300 60 gig console, traded the 2 games it came with, sold my old hard drive for $30 (now $150 off) and they sent me 2 transfer cables instead of one. sold them for roughly $45 a piece, say $40 after fee's and shipping. (now $230 off). so i paid about $70 to upgrade my hard-drive to 60 gb. and get rid of my old console that was not under waranty, and was about to die (again). plus i got ninja gaiden 2 and re4 wii edition for the games that came with the console, (lego indy and kung-fu panda).
