(500) Days of Summer Impressions |

Today was the lovely and gracious Mrs. Grouch's birthday. As part of the festivities we went to the movies. Mrs. Grouch decided on (500) Days of Summer over District 9 as the movie. I was happy she picked it as I had heard good things, and didn't think District 9 was her cup of tea. Joseph Gordon-Levitt traded in his teenage angst as alien geezer turned human teenager Tommy Solomon, for Tom Hansen an architect who works at a greeting card company. His performance was solid, and had a much better role than in G.I. Joe. Zooey Deschanel plays the girl next door, but is more than she seems Summer Finn. I haven't seen her in anything else, but she was quite good. The film was creative in its use of time, music, and film techniques. The Han Solo pseudo cameo was pretty awesome as well. The serious moments were well spaced out, and the comedy was well timed. The soundtrack featured some well known songs, and others I am not familiar with, but I will be checking out. We haven't bought a movie on DVD in over 5 years, but we will probably pick up this romantic comedy. Its definitely a sleeper, but well worth checking out. My rating is 4.7 out of 5. <RANT> On a side note, I had one of those in the movie. Mother on cell phone, 7 year old, 8 year old, and a toddler < 2. You should not be in the movies, especially one with lots of sexual language and innuendo with your family. Also I'd like to thank your 8 year old for doing your job walking the cranky toddler outside. Way to go mom! Sad thing is there is a family somewhere who can't have children who would really care for there kids, but somehow you have three. </RANT> Anyway see (500) Days of Summer. Sleeper films like these really need the support! |

I saw this with my girlfriend, yes guys we sometimes have to make concessions. There were several tongue-in-cheek moments in the film, and it didn't take itself too seriously, which is good.
Some things were somewhat silly -- the Tom Hansen character...working for a greeting card company, as a writer...oh come on! He also tends to wear a lot of sweaters...just an observation. The female lead, who is also in The Happening, plays a fairly unaffected woman, who if she has feelings, well, I didn't see any portrayed. She has pretty blue eyes, but throughout the movie, the same eyes are devoid of any emotion, which if intentional, was pretty good acting. Is a modern version of Great Expectations, ahh, not really. Guys will get a kick out of this movie because some of this stuff has certainly been pulled on you by women, or you may have been so head-over-heels that you'll recognize some of his actions, but I don't want to spoil it for you. Overall, if you're dragged to a date movie, this isn't great, but not bad, you can do much, much worse. |

It's more of an indie film than a romantic comedy. A good example of a romantic comedy would be The Proposal.

At the beginning of the movie, the narrator says, "this is not a love story". Whether or not that disqualifies it from being classified as a romantic comedy is up to the viewer, I think. The movie is, after all, both romantic and comedic.
And to the OP: if you're liked Joseph Gordon Levitt in this you should check out the movies Brick, The Lookout, and Mysterious Skin. He's excellent in all three of them. They're no GI Joe, of course, but not everything can be. |
