Recruitment

I've spent the last year or so spinning my wheels about going back to college in order to finish my four year degree. (It almost seems like more trouble than it's worth).

I was looking at Oregon Institute of Technology but I really dont want a 45 minute drive for an hour long class. Especially when I have enough trouble sitting through class anyway.

So I found something on-line that looked promising. Western Governors University https://www.wgu.edu/online_it_degree...ics_degree.asp

And thus started the agressive recruitment. Numerous emails following up on my inital request for information. And several phone calls.

Now, I'm hardly the student anyyone would want at their university. It took me 6 years just to get my first 2 year degree.

Why all the interest? It smells faintly of scam.

That is because it IS either a scam, or simply not worth your time.

Okay, "Scam" is probably a bit harsh. They are probably a legitimate company, selling a legitimate product. I'm just not sure that their product is actually worth the price.

I used to work for an on-line school. After that experience, I can tell you that I would have never, NEVER shelled out money to attend an on-line school. I cannot in good conscience recommend on-line educational establishments. It doesn't matter if they are accredited. I have seen the kind of people they hire to produce their coursework. I WAS one of the people who produced their coursework. (although I didn't write any of it, I was on the production side of things) The "teachers" they hire are not the kind of people you want to learn from.
Re: Richard Kain,

I don't know if that goes for all online schools. I don't know that I would trust stand alone online schools, but from what I've heard, the online courses brick and mortar schools offer is pretty good. I know a lot of people that were taking online classes from the college I went to and loved it because it gave them more options of when they went and stuff. Of course, if you go through an actual college that offers online courses, then it may not be as good of a value, since a lot of the online schools offer much lower rates, so there won't be as much savings, but at least you are getting some savings, but with better classes.

I'm not sure what type of an online school Richard worked with, but I do agree it would take a lot of research to make sure the school is legitimate and is going to offer you course work that is worth your time. I wouldn't accept just any school until you spent the time researching it.

Just my two cents.

Good luck with your decision!

Western Governors University

Hi everyone. I represent WGU, and I want to share a little information. WGU is online, non-profit, and fully accredited. Our IT degree programs, both bachelor's and master's include some industry standard certifications. WGU is designed to be flexible for working adults--you can start at the beginning of any month--and because it's online and competency-based, you can study when it's convenient for you. Each student is assigned a mentor who will guide you through the degree program, help you schedule tests and assessments, and direct you to whatever resources you need to be successful. Tuition is very affordable, about the same as a state college or university, and financial aid is available. WGU was conceived about 13 years ago by 19 U.S. governors who wanted to create a unviersity that would offer an affordable and accredited option for working adults who might not be able to attend a traditional school. For more information regarding our IT programs, visit our website, http://www.wgu.edu/online_it_degrees/programs. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at jmitchell@wgu.edu.
I have been taking classes through WGU for almost a year, feel free to pm me if you have any questions about it.
