So yeah, if you guys remember I posted a blog about my house getting robbed and Xbox taken. So, I waited for the price to drop and ordered one with free 2-day shipping from dell.com. The total was about $270, not bad at all...
I just need to know what to do once I get it. They stole the HDD with the Xbox so I'm going to start fresh. I guess I should register it with xbox.com, but do I have to remove the old one? I'm assuming there's some kind of retrieve profile option in the account selection dialog? Also.. I'm pretty sure I'm screwed in terms of my old save files, correct? |

yeah, i dont think you can get your old saves. but they do have a recover gamertag option. i would register this one, and i would un-register the old one if for one reason. it was your first console and will be set as your "primary" console. so if you buy anything through x-box.com, it will send it to that x-box not your new one. this happened to me with braid. while i was able to download it, i was only able to play it on the account i downloaded it on. and this was after i did the liscense transfer. now that could have been a fluke and only happen to me, i dont kow. there also may be a way to set your new console as your primary console, im not sure.good thing is i think you will be able to get anything you downloaded back though if you do a liscense transfer and then go to your history and download it again.

Ok, let me get this straight.
1. I have to do unregister my old Xbox (do you know how?) and register my new now. 2. I have to transfer my licenses. 3. I have to recover my gamer tag... I think that's everything? |

To clear up the license transfer, this is how it works. If you buy xbl stuff, it is locked to the SYSTEM it is originally dl'ed to for OFFLINE play. If you want to play your old xbl titles offline, you need to do a license transfer. If you are connected to live all the time, there is no reason to do so. You don't need to liscense transfer for your DL history either. You can always access it at any time from your profile after you recover your gamertag. That is, unless they have changed your password or hijacked your acct. You should actually go on xbox.com and change your password right now, if you haven't done so already.

@static x i thought that if it was on a diffrent console, only the account that bought it could use it, so if i am mistaken then sorry, but i though you had to do the liscense transfer so that any account on your new xbox can use it. of course if you are the only person that uses your console, then i guess its not an issue. but for me i i have my account, my brothers account, and then a "guest" account in case anyone wants to just play. am i wrong here? can anyone use the stuff without doing a liscense transfer?
@phrostbyte - i had to call xbox and get them to un-register my console, it was a pain in the ass. im not sure if you can do it online or not, and i believe you re-cover your gamertag before you do the liscense transfer. not sure though. but the liscense tranfer was easy if i remember correctly. do it all through xbox.com |

Not unless something drastic happened. If you had new hardware, and somebody wanted to play your xbl games, you just had to have the profile signed in that originally bought the game in addition to the profile that wanted to play. That's always how it worked prior to the license transfer and I don't see how they could change that.

Well when you download something off the Marketplace it comes with a gamertag license, and a console license. This means you can play it on any gamertag on your console online or offline, without having the gamertag that downloaded needing to be logged in. So, if his brother wants to play something, say The Lost and The Damned for GTA IV on the Xbox, and doesn't want to have two controllers hooked up so he can log into his brothers (PhrostByte) account, then he'll need to perform the license transfer.
Otherwise, without the license transfer, PhrostByte will ONLY be able to play his DLC from his old console while his profile is logged in and on Xbox Live. If he's offline it won't work, or if any other profile on the Xbox trys to play it without him being logged in it also won't work. So, license transfer is a very nice feature and that's why you need to perform it. And that's how they could change it, Static X. They move your console licenses over to your new console so any profile can play it without the original downloader being signed in. You have to admit it'd get kind of old having to have everyone else sign into your account when they want to play DLC, or having two controllers hooked up. |
