What the hell happened over the past 20 years? Kanye
ing West? Seriously? This guy makes the most generic tunes ever, formulaic as hell, and claims he's the "voice of a generation". No thanks.I've recently (meaning for the past year, and then some) been quite very much enjoying Jethro Tull, possibly one of my favorite bands of all time, and am completely stoked to see Ian Anderson live on the 14th (maybe 15th too if the show goes well). That was my segue into other music my dad tried introducing to me when I was younger, such as Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Simon/Garfunkel, etc. It's been a nice change from my death metal, but I find it odd that the vast majority of people I've asked have no idea who Jethro Tull are, or Neil Young for that matter. It's utterly surprising. Two of the most amazing artists ever, nobody knows who. I was even more surprised to find that about half of my friends have never heard of Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan. Seriously? Maybe the only band that I've heard today which can claim the top-notch quality of older music is Opeth. They're just amazing. All of the other generic indie bands are just... blech. Metal bands can be good, but they don't have any appeal to the masses. Rap also has way too many artists (and is much too formulaic in these immature stages) for any one to claim a good spot, and those that somehow manage are utter shit (see: T-Payne). Either way, I wish I could've been around to see Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, and Neil Young would've been nice to see/see in their prime, but Zep and Jethro are two of my all-time favorites. And I mean favorites. I have all of their albums, their DVDs, their live recordings, bootlegs, singles, compilations, and even some tribute albums. Not many other bands in my massive collection of 42K songs can claim they have that much of my love. Anyone else have old favorites? In other news, college is fun. UW Seattle, hopefully majoring in physics and computer science. We'll see how things play out. It sucks that literally every week I have a midterm because my classes have 1, 2, 3 midterms and one final, so the spacing works out perfectly to have one exam per week. Great. I've been used to getting 4 hours of sleep per night, though. I suppose that works well in the long run; I've always wanted to hallucinate. PS I can't ing wait to see Ian Anderson. Anyone else with me on this one? |

Times change, man. Honestly, there's not much I really enjoy from older music... I mean, I do love my Rush, and ELO, and Black Sabbath, but the music fit the times. I find if you dig, you can find some amazing music. Look up the Japanese band Boris. They're stoner doom, but amazing and you might enjoy em.
I like how music has progress, but then again I kinda... Don't. I like technical music, but bands like Meshuggah and Psyopus push it too far. The Russian Circles is a instrumental band that just flat out are wonderful. The Atlas Moth is another stoner doom sludge band from Chicago that are pretty intense. Pop music has imploded on itself. Now, a hit pop song has one catchy line, a hook, and that's about it. It doesn't take much. Rap has suffered greatly, too, but artists like The Cool Kids and Cunninglynguists are really keeping the underground afloat. Stay away from the radio and you'll find lots coming out today that you can appreciate. |
