Playstation RPG Backlog (PS1, PS2, & PS3)

Here it is. My complete backlog of Playstation 1-3 RPGs.

I'm sure its not as big as many others, but 12 RPGs are more than enough for me.

I never owned a PS2. Yeah, gasp! I know. I bought my first PS1 six months before the PS2 came out. So, I've been about a generation behind on consoles since the SNES-era. Last year when I finally caught up to this generation and bought a PS3, backwards compatability was big for me. So, when the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle came out with an 80gig hard-drive and emulated PS2 BC, I was ready to jump all over that.

As a fan of the RPGs, I had a lot to catch up on. The first PS2 RPG I played thru was the awesome Persona 3 FES. Subsequently, I've played thru Final Fantasy X, X2, and XII, the Xenosaga series (Episodes 1-3), and Persona 4.

So, here's what I have left in my PS2 RPG backlog.

I'm about halfway thru SMT Nocturne. Long, involving game from what I've played so far. The story isn't all that great, but I do enjoy the demon fusing and stuff. Its just not a game I can throw huge amounts of time into. Great for playing a few weeks, then putting down and moving on, then coming back to later and play it more for a few weeks, etc.

I'm sure Digital Devil Saga is similar, so I will totally not touch that game until I'm finished with Nocturne.

Looking forward to Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter a little, but its low on my play list. I loved BoF 3 and 4, but I'm not so sure about this one. From what I've heard and read, it is relatively short, but brutally difficult.

I tried Star Ocean, and didn't much care for it. I'll give it another chance again sometime later, because I didn't get very far in it. One of my best friends loves the game and consideres it one of his favorite RPGs of all time. Me, I wasn't so convinced.

Don't know much at all about dot.hack and Valkyrie Profile 2. I've never played Valkyrie Profile 1 (shame on me?) so I might hold onto it until VP1 shows up on PSN.

What's to say about DQVIII? I've always been a fan of the Dragon Quest games, but this one just hasn't grabbed me and demanded that I play it.

Of all my PS2 backlog, I'd have to say that the one I'm looking forward most to playing is Tales of the Abyss. Many consider it to be one of the best "Tales of" games. The only other Tales game I've played is Symphonia.

Now, as for my small PS3 RPG backlog.

I'm working thru Eternal Sonata now. I should have it completed within a couple of weeks.

I've put about 8 hours or so into Disgaea 3, which is barely just a scratch on the surface. Never played Disgaea 1 or 2, so its all new to me.

As for Enchanted Arms, I suppose I'll get around to it eventually, but it is low on my list.

My only PS1 RPG on the backlog is The Legend of Dragoon. Its probably the lowest on my backlog, and I seriously doubt I'll ever get to it. But who knows, someday I might have time, so I'll keep it around for now.

So, that's my RPG backlog. For now. Hopefully I can burn thru at least 5-6 of these next year. After I beat Eternal Sonata, I'm probably gonna play Tales of the Abyss, or maybe DQ8. Depends on my mood, I guess.

Tales of the Abyss was very good. I played the PSP version of Valkyrie Profile last year and loved it, though it was different enough from other RPGs that reading the FAQs helped a lot. VP2 is also in my backlog, but I haven't had big chunks of time to devote to any RPGs since September. I also have both Nocturne and DDS but after Persona 3 I wanted to give Atlus RPGs a break.

One of these days I'll finish ToV. :p I still have 1/3 left to go.

Star ocean, you sort of have to level up your people to spend points into speccing them to not suck. It's pretty shitty, but after a couple hours they handle themselves pretty well. Although I can't stand the game overall.

Eternal Sonata has one of the worst stories in the history of games to me and I'm pretty easy on rpgs in general. Great battle system, but the story.....god awful after the first half. And can you say drawn out dialog? let me paint a picture.

Lets say a chick stubs her toe
she will exclaim "ow i stubbed my toe"
then another character will ask "did you stub your toe"
and she will answer "yes, I stubbed my toe"
and this will go on for 8 minutes of a cut scene.

But despite my hate for it..beautiful graphics and great battle system.

I enjoyed enchanted arms, decent story but some super awful voice acting. good battle system, if not kind of clunky. It's a pretty straight forward game.

Disgaea 3 is more of the same but polished and deeper than before, so depending on your preference of previous NIS games, it could be heaven or hell.

Tales of Abyss is in my backlog as well, and I've never really heard a bad thing about it.

Sorry to rant...Eternal Sonata's dialog infuriated me.

LOVED Tales of the Abyss. One of the best RPGs.

Star Ocean and Eternal Sonata were very meh. The storylines of both games never caught onto me.

dot.hack was a really enjoyable game. It had a very mmoish feel. Never had a chance to play the others outside of the first though. There are just way too many of them out there.

Valkyrie was definitely a really interesting game. Had a chance to play the PSP/PS1 version and felt really unique. Enjoyed it.

I have to yet to try Nocturne or DDS. Would love to own a couple of both.

Those games will last you quite a long time ^^

Hopefully your Dragoon disc 2 actually works.

Abyss is in my backlog as well, along with .hack infection and mutation and DQ8. I wish I had those SMT games, but I can't justify picking them up with my massive RPG backlog.

Your backlog looks alot like mine. Looking forward to Tales of Abyss though. The only other one I've completed was Tales of Phantasia on the GBA.
I got bored of SO after less than 12 hours in. the story atm and graphics didn't really keep me going. however, I would like to get back to it one day.

Disgaea...I still have 1 and 2 (sealed) to get through. I hear these games can rack up up to 1000s of hours of replay...

ToA is very good from what I've heard and considered one of the better To* games (behind ToV and ToS). Still gotta finish ToS so I can start ToV!

Seeing DQ reminds me that the series is one of several game series I must get through (having played zero main DQ games)

Is Eternal Sonata that bad? I heard the VA is terrible but everything else was fine. Still got it sealed (360) so can always try to dump it somehwere
.hack is a game you might as well take off the list unless you have the other games in the series. Its main selling point is the story and the characters, which you're going to be missing out on unless you have all four games.

Same with Digital Devil Saga.

Man, if only I had a 12 game rpg backlog... I think I need to stop buying games...

Tales of Abyss was a great game overall.
Although, I think I'm one of very small sliver of people who absolutely hated Luke and took him out of my party whenever possible.

Digital Devil Saga gameplay-wise is somewhat similar to Nocturne, though it's considered to be less difficult.
Unlike Nocturne, DDS is more story driven, though there are long moments of dungeon crawling. It's not too long since it's only half of a whole story.

Happy adventuring!
By the time I finished Digital Devil Saga 1 including the extra quests, I didn't even want to jump into DDS2. Similar to your Nocturne experience, DDS1 was me playing over a couple years chipping away at it. Major grind fest if you're looking to earn all the bonuses unlocked for a DDS2 playthrough. I'm not sure I'd even recommend it. You don't fuse demons in those games, so it might not intrest you. By the time I was done I couldn't care less about wtf the story was about. Why did I finish it? Pure stubbornness!

So much praise for Tales of Abyss, this is the only game out of those 12 that i have heard little about. Maybe i should add this to my rpg collection.

Sorry, but i don't see Kingdom Hearts in there.
