The Biggest Gaming Purchase Mistake You Ever Made Was...

It's the holiday season, and we're making gaming purchases and donating to Child's Play as well. But before I throw more money at this hobby, I'm reflecting upon my bad purchases. For me, a veteran gamer, the list is long. My mistakes are typically in buying systems. But feel free to include games that you pre-ordered, stood in line for, or played for hours just to realize that you just wasted a ton of time.

#1 - The 3DO System

I'd say its a tie for me, one big purchase mistake was the 3DO system, simply because it was so, so expensive...around $600. And the games were ok, but the controller was stiff and unresponsive.

#1a - The 32X

This was just foolishness on my part. It was known that Sega was releasing another game system in the near future. Plus, my Sega Genesis already had a large growth in the Sega CD, so placing this on top of the Genesis just looked plain silly.

I actually liked some of the games, Star Wars was good, so was Doom, Knuckles, Shadow Squadron, but the system was so short lived, it was a horrible purchase. What was I thinking? Lost of folks lost confidence in Sega after this release, but heck, we didn't have to buy the thing. And, you would have thought that the Saturn would have had a little more 3D oomph after Sega saw the public's reception of the 32X. Ugh!

Right now you're thinking what about the Jaguar -- well, I bought one of those too, but certainly wasn't an early adopter like I was with the systems above.

Happy Holiday, and I hope your purchases this season are terrific!

Two months ago, I probably would have said "Xbox 360." It has since redeemed itself, courtesy of Dead Rising.

Actuall, I'm trying to think and the only things that comes to mind are Tiwlight Princess and MGS4. Neither were bad, but they were definitely a lot worse than the "OHMYGODTHISGAMEISAWESOMEEVERYONENEEDSTOPLAYIT NOW" that everyone made them seem like.

3DO is up there for me too, even though I got it once it was $300. I got it OVER the also $300 Playstation. 3 months later the 3DO was discontinued, and Playstation went on to be one of the best platforms of all time.

But my worst, was paying full price at release for Turok Evolution. Good god what an awful game.

My brother and I trading all our Nintendo, SNES, Genesis games and systems in to Babbages to buy a 3DO.

Worst trade ever. That's why I never trade in anything.

As much as some reviewers over rate the shit out of games I will honestly never buy into a game without good previews/reviews or a demo to show me how good a game is.

Worst decision was a few years ago when I bought NHL2k8 at full price. It will also be the last sports game I ever buy at full price unless they can somehow turn that series around.

System wise my worst decision was the Sega CD. Luckily my dad found someone interested in the ad we put in the paper and made most of his money back for that abomination he bought me. I never got Popful Mail or Lunar and the only good game I got to experience was Sonic CD.

Nintendo 64. I should have bought a PS1 instead.

@oscar -- feel your pain, I've done similar. I don't trade anymore, but while the logistics would be tough, if Child's Play accepted used games that'd be cool, but its obviously easier to collect cash and get new stuff.
bsesb2003's Avatar
@Aleryn - maybe so, but there wasn't too much on the PS that matched up with Mario 64, maybe Metal Gear and RE2.

Buying a game new at whatever the top price was when said game came out.

Atari Jaguar it had one good game Aliens vs Predator that is all pretty much(I fell in the trap of thinking Atari was going to mount a huge comeback). The other system choice was a 3DO but I could not fathom paying 700 bucks for a system!

Sega CD - Because I never finished Lunar Silver Star cause every time I beat the Bone Dragon the damn game froze(after trying 4 new copies the store ran out of them so I gave up).

This gen? Prince of Persia.

Last gen there really wasn't one.

N64, WWF Revenge.

IN terms of game quality -- the Sega CD was terrible - that full morion video, and the game with Dana Plato, was it Night Trap, just horrible, (may she rest in peace).

I haven't bought a system I've regretted yet. The Wii SOMEWHAT, but I've had plenty of fun on it, so it's not too bad. There's still tons of things I actually want to play on it.

For games, my biggest regret was Star Wars Galaxies, the CE version no less. What a waste of time. I'm still sitting on it, and don't know how to get rid of it. It's not going for diddly on ebay.

I'm pretty sure I used my 3DO more than my Xbox 360 and Wii combined.
bsesb2003's Avatar
@bmachine - Used the 3DO for what - a doorstop?

I bought a Saturn, but thought enough to return it 2 days later in exchange for a PS1.

Second was buying a Wii. Not so much that it's a bad system, however the hoops I went through to buy it to be ultimately unimpressed. Fortunately I was able to sell it while they were still pretty unattainable to make up my money.

i'd say my wii. to reiterate what others have said...its not that its ab ad system, its just that i spend WAY more time on my 360 and ps3. i've had fun with many games on it, but they're often short lived and i haven't touched the system in.....almost 5 months

@Monsta Mack: you should have bought NHL 08 instead as that game was the BOMB!

Nintendo DS Lite and Wii. Please don't flame me. I grew up in the PlayStation Generation, and not NES.
