My lowly Best of '2009

I'm not an uber gamer, so my list is pretty limited. The top 10 isn't even 10, and it includes every 2009 game I've played!

1. Trials HD (360 XBLA)
2. Pinball Hall of Fame: The William's Collection (360)
3. GTA: Chinatown Wars (DS)
4. Wii Sports Resort
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
6. Tiger Woods PGA Tour '10 Wii (will it go to '11?)
7. Punch-Out!!!
8. Wii Fit Plus

Generally I've liked them all, so being at the bottom doesn't imply bad in the slightest.

Pinball Hall of Fame gets a boost for being a simulation of real pinball, and a damn fine one, rather then some video-game developers awful home-grown playfields/rules and lousy physics, though it's not actually the 2nd most played game for me. I have played it a lot, but even though it is a great pinball simulation, it still can't compare to the real thing. It's the closest I'll get to owning so many great machines, though, and I will buy the next installment and/or any DLC released on day 1. Well, maybe not the Gottleib Collection. I'll buy that eventually, but Gottleib made some of the worst electronic games out there. If the PHoF:TGC for 360, which presumably will be coming at some point, adds more Gottleib electromechanical games, which is when Gottleib excelled, I'll be a lot more interested in it. Well, OK, I'll buy the 360 version day 1 regardless, but I do hope they add more Gottleib EMs to the game list. Also, PHoF is the one game that makes me really want a 1080p TV (I have 720p now). I'm perfectly happy with 720p for everything else, but PHoF would be better still in 1080p.

NSMBWii might go higher - I've only gotten to world 3 so far. Tiger Woods '10 Wii could be lower but I give it credit for a being a great showcase for WM+. While it's a very good game that utilizes the WM+ beautifully, I just haven't played it that much because I'm not much into regular golf games. I, by far, like the disc golf part best, but it's lackluster compared to the regular golf in terms of depth, and that disappoints me. There's no online disc golf and there are no courses designed specifically for disc golf. If they substantially beef up the disc golf in '11 (whatever they call it), or, better, if they release a separate disc golf game that has way more depth, perhaps with other disc games such as Ultimate, I'll buy it, probably no questions asked. I'd love to see a good WM+ Ultimate game - that could be a standalone itself.

Wii Fit Plus isn't at the bottom because I disliked it. I do like it. The new minigames are fun and the exercise routines and other improvements are quite good. I wish, like the name implied, that it supported the WM+ as well, as there's a lot of potential for WM+ with a fitness "game". Maybe the next edition?

Punchout!!! is a superb update to the original and I really love the graphics, humor and gameplay, but I must admit that I only got so far in the game and then stopped playing. I liked the game less once it got pretty difficult, perhaps once it became less practical to play with motion controls, as I thought that was really fun and it happened to be good exercise as well. It is a game I want to go back to and eventually finish up, though, even if it does mean giving up the motion controls and going old-school.

The 360 is a newer edition to our house, and Trials HD and PHoF:TWC are the only 2009 games I've got for it. I love Trials HD and have been playing it to death and back, and picked up the DLC as soon as I could. I actually don't see any announced upcoming disc-based releases that interest me on the 360, which I'm sure puts me in the minority. Fortunately there's lots to explore on XBLA and I imagine there will be many good releases on XBLA in 2010.

Lastly, there are other games I've acquired and played in 2009, that aren't 2009 games. If I added those in, I would have to put GTAIV into the list somewhere. I had never played a GTA game before and I've really enjoyed it (though I haven't finished it yet and it's been a while). It inspired me to pickup GTA:CW for the DS, which actually then took over for me and I ended up finishing that game up and loving every minute of it.
