Why 2009 Has No Game of The Year, But 2010 Will Have Plenty

As I described in my previous blog (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=12197), 2009 was a disappointment in games for me. Despite many games that were a lot of fun, there was no one game that really blew me away. Luckily, only 5 days into the new year, i found a game more worthy of that GoTY award than any other game off 2009, and that game is Bayonetta. It manages to have a lot of originality (a mix of a Devil May Cry/God of War complexity with its own odds and entities), and the gameplay is fun even hours into it. If anything, Bayonetta deserves 2009 Game of the Year. So why, after playing one game, do I think 2010 is going to be great? Well, let's go over just the FIRST HALF of the year, and it should be pretty clear.

Bayonetta and Darksiders just came out, and while I've already talked about Bayonetta, Darksiders looks to be a God of War/Zelda mix with over 15 hours of gameplay, and from what I've seen so far, people love it even if it does nothing new.

January 26, Mass Effect 2 comes out, one game I've been waiting for since I finished the first one over two years ago. In fact, it may be my most anticipated game ever. One of the only problems I had with the original was technical, and if they can fix that and expand on the universe, it could be one of the best games ever.

Bioshock 2 looks to maintain the same thing the original did, which is fine by me i guess. Honestly, I never really wanted a sequel, and I'm skeptical that this game may disappoint because, like Assassins Creed, the sequel isn't going to be as original as the first game was. I hope I'm wrong though.

White Knight Chronicles is FINALLY coming to the US, after years of waiting, and hopefully it meets expectations. For something like a JRPG, it's hard to see if it'll be really good or not, so i can't really say until it comes out.

Because of the Sims 3 cards (if you don't know what that is, nevermind), I have Dante's Inferno pre-ordered so I'll find out how it is regardless of what I think. However, the demo was a poor man's God of War III, and i was more than unimpressed by it. Hopefully the real game is actually fun.

Never played a Splinter Cell game, but Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction looks very good, and though I'll probably wait for a $20 before I even try it, I hope that it ends up a good game.

The same goes for MAG. I'll wait for it to be cheap even though I hope it's good, but from what I've heard, it's a boring shooter with a 20-second respawn time. They don't have much time left, so I hope they can fix whatever's wrong before it comes out.

Battlefield: Bad Company was one of most underrated games of all time, having a surprisingly-fun single-player story as well as the always-fun multiplayer that Battlefield is known for. Now that they know their single-player story matters, the sequel looks great.

Stay tuned for the next blog, as the first half of the year still has the following games as well as many more that may not be hyped-up, but may surprise a lot of people.

Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII
Metro 2033
R.U.S.E.
Red Dead Redemption
Lost Planet 2
God of War III
Assassin's Creed II DLC
Resident Evil 5 DLC

2010 is going to be great

Couldve sworn I wrote that, haha that too
It's amazing how some games blow people away while others they do not. Personally, even with it's quirks, MW2 is the best game I have ever played for the fact that it keeps me coming back for hours on end. I really cannot get enough of that game.

In the meantime I'm trying to get multiple games, and have a backlog of many many games, but I continue to play MW2.

2010 is very exciting. I'm deciding between Darksiders and Bayonetta, and have already pre-ordered Dante's Inferno. Mass Effect 2 is going to be awesome (still playing Mass Effect in preparation). I may wait til these games start hitting the used shelves during the B2G1 deal days.

Video games are so awesome now. Thank you Microsoft for battling Playstation and forcing companies to create better and better games! Yay!

Demon's Souls is your avatar, but it wasn't your GOTY for 2009?

Bad Company, one of the most underrated games of all time, a bit much don't you think? it was a solid game but needed some improvements. I'm very exicited for the sequel.

DLC? That really don't count for a game... Sorry. I haven't played Bayonetta of course I really want too. I think 2010 will go to God Of War III as my game of the year.

No good games in 2009? Uncharted 2 was amazing.

Uncharted was my game of the year for 2009. It seemed to have everything well to me anyway it did.

@Retorn7

Definitely Bayonetta. And yes, ME2 will be amazing

@Feeding

Yeah, i should probably change that.

@ivanctorres

Bad Company was so underrated because everyone hated on it, i don't want to sound like it was REALLY good. Just a fun diversion.

@dan13l858

See previous blog, U2 was very good, but a little overrated if you ask me.

I think you're going to be disappointed by White Knight Chronicles and Heavy Rain. Obviously I haven't played WKC, but you know when even the Japanese are kind of "meh" about a JRPG, that's saying something. And Heavy Rain is probably going to be "interesting" rather than "good," if Indigo Prophecy is anything to go by. In place of either of them, I'd put the Team Ico game -- I'm blanking on the name right now.

You forgot to mention Alan Wake.

I've heard the online mode was Famitsu's biggest gripe with the game. The game sold really well apparently, about 350k in Japan. I wouldn't call that 'meh' reception.

Super Street Fighter IV
Bioshock 2

The Last Guardian, and yes it will probably be as great as the Team Ico games before it, but not GOTY.
