My Wife: The Gamer

OK, she's not really a gamer, but I'm trying to get her into it more and more.
As detailed in my previous blog, I thought that possibly having her play Heavy Rain would be a good idea.
The past three nights, she has played while I just watched. I thought that it could be a "stress free experience". When I said this before, I think some people thought I meant the game itself. Actually, I was referring to the stress I cause when I keep telling her about her mistakes.

"No! Go left! Left! Why are you just standing there? I said go left! What do you mean you don't know how? It's the same as the other 40 times you went left! ARGH!"

I don't know why, but I get terribly frustrated when I watch another person play a game and do something (I consider) wrong. So, she often doesn't even want to attempt a game when I am here unless it happens to be a puzzle game or something else very simple.

Anyway, my thought was that since there is no game over in Heavy Rain, she could technically do nothing wrong, so I would not point out these things I thought were mistakes.

As I said, she played the past three nights and, last night, she beat the game. To an extent, my experiment was a success. She never quit playing the entire time and was actually looking forward to it. I did still make a few comments here and there (You don't have to hit the glove button after every step you know? See the circle it makes; you just have to go outside of it and hit it again there.), but nothing as bad as I normally would.

Just from watching her play, here are my impressions of the game.

Characters are not as good as that preview video I saw a long time back.

Really does seem to be a mixture of God of War and Dragon's Lair as I imagined.

What's up with the accents?

Wish they would have made some things a bit more obvious for her (When she was supposed to help Ethan escape from the police station, she was like "Great! I saw a raincoat already.", but then stumbled around for 10 minutes getting frustrated before finding out that she couldn't pick any up until she used the mic to speak to the guard. )

Controls seem a bit difficult. (She had no problems during the QTEs and such, but when crawling through the pipe filled with glass, she could not get Ethan to turn a corner easily and she was getting angry. He would either turn completely around or he would squirm against the wall for a minute until he finally "broke free" to make the turn. )

Jason deserved to get hit by the car and die at the beginning . Seriously. I'm 5 foot behind you screaming your name and you just keep walking? It's time for an ass beating kid.

Story was interesting, but I couldn't figure out why Scott would have been given so many "good guy" options if he was the killer. Why even bring a partner along, and then even go so far as to go kill 20 guys for revenge when she gets killed? Matter of fact, why even risk your life with this guy in the first place when you KNOW his son is not the killer?

As stated above, character models weren't as good as I expected, but not bad at all. Horse Face still had a horse face and Madison turned out to be pretty hot.

------------
Here are the results of Ai's playthrough!

Ethan: Shot at the end by the cops after promising not to ever leave Shawn(sp?) again. Nice job creating the next killer, Dad!
Jayden: Ground up in a car after failing to take his drugs.
Horse Face: Cursed with a horse face. Luckily dies by drowning when Ai forgot to untie her before escaping a sinking car.
Madison: So hot, she dies in a fire. OK, actually died whilst jumping out of a window from a fire, but not as interesting to type.
Scott: Gets to walk away free as the only living main character.

My thoughts on Ai's results:

LOL, you killed everyone!

Still lots of fun to watch her play and I am very happy that I decided to pick the game up. I'll start my playthrough tonight. Ai is excited to see how the story changes and, honestly, so am I. I hope they are big changes and not just a few things here and there that would be utterly forgettable.

I am trying to get my gf into gaming, it's hard mainly because SHE doesn't have the patience and wants to physically hit the bad guy (on the screen) that kills her (she is from NY lol). Then she tells me that is too hard and gives up. But I will never surrender!

I picked up Warhammer online and next day she got and started lvling up faster than me lol. Now the other day talking to her on the phone I heard some noise and she tells me "oh I picked up Dante's Inferno" she then tells me that she is trying to beat up in a week so she can trade it back to Gamestop to get more credit so she can get God of War 3.

She really surprises me sometimes and thats why I love her.

Oh god your a backseat gamer! I can't stand that crap. I'm surprised your wife hasn't smacked you around for that yet, I would have. Maybe you should leave the room while she plays other games & not yell at her.

I had some of the same problem as your wife did. Ethan kept turning around in a circle a lot on the glass. Also for some of the actions such as for your "horseface" I too did the same thing and I was yelling at the game since that isn't what I wanted to do. Some of the motions they have you do, I'm not sure what it does till I try and that is annoying since I thought that was going to do something else than it actually did.

put yourself in her shoes. you wouldn't get annoyed by that? if someone was watching you play telling to do things? i dont blame her for disliking playing while you watch... no offense i think you're awesome, just saying i dont blame her for disliking the backseat gamer thing like lilytrabbit says

I guess I have the opposite problem. Last night Dragon Age: Origins (whatever the expansion pack is called) froze up, and that was clearly Ship's fault. And one of the controllers is old and thinks I hit the left thumbstick a lot more than I really am. That's his fault too. :-)

I don't recall saying that she shouldn't be annoyed. That's exactly why I wanted her to play this game because it wouldn't compel me to be an ass (as much).

It's not as if I'm choosing to say these things, it just comes out because I'm thinking it's right there, you are looking right at it. Why don't you see it?

Never in either blog did I defend it.

Strange, i'm the exact same way. I can't stand watching people doing things wrong in a game when it seems so easy to me. I also watched my brother play through Heavy Rain, and i still got really annoyed when he didn't complete all of the five trials, but in the end i got to see things i never did in both of the times i played through the game, which is very, very cool.

In reference to Scott, he falls in love with Lauren and that's why he goes on a revenge rampage. If you save her from drowning, they kiss and fall in love. It was sort of references throughout, but i didn't get that they were in love until; i saved lauren the second time i played through it.If you go through Scott's thoughts, he thinks to himself a lot about regretting to bring her along as a partner also.

My brother also seemed to have a lot of the same problems (controls, accents,...) which is pretty interesting. He also had trouble getting through the part with the glass, i gave him a tip (turn the brightness to max and it becomes so light you can find your way through).

Ending he got:

Ethan- doesn't find address
Jayden- doesn't find address, accuses blake, gets fired
Madison- dies in the fire
Scott- walks free

So basically, almost as shitty an ending as your wife got.

Wait, but doesn't Ai have a PSP? I guess I figured she was already somewhat of a gamer.

Julia loves gaming. She just finished up a 70-hour run through Sacred 2 and is another 15 or so hours into Lunar Silver Star Harmony (her fourth, maybe fifth playthrough of the first Lunar game). She also loves the Lego games and is (somewhat) patiently awaiting Lego Harry Potter.

I am easily 10x worse with my wife. We try to play various co-op games together. It's not always that easy, she is always telling me I am "running ahead". Or for instance in NSMBW, I am the reason she dies(which is only true a handful of times!). She is very competitive and God forbid I even remotely beat her score ONCE she forgets about beating me the last 10 times. For the most part though I very much enjoy being able to play games with her, and it's nice when we are being able to get through a campaign of L4D.
