This will probably contain spoilers so I guess I'll just wrap this bad boy up in one big handy dandy spoiler tag to be on the safe side....
So I've never played a God of War game before because back in the day, I just couldn't justify spending $50 bucks on a game that I would probably beat in a weekend and never play again. Now since I have less time on my hands and tools such as Gamefly and CAG at my disposal, I can partake in 8 hour games and not feel like a dumbass for spending so much money on them.
If the other God of War games were as good as this one....I've been missing out. I can't sit here and say that it was a minute to minute thrill ride or anything, but that game had some truly epic moments. I beat it about a week ago and I still have the game's theme that plays at the end of the Poseidon and Zeus fights stuck in my head.
They did a good job of driving their hooks in me early. The opening sequence (everything up to Poseidon's death) was, for lack of a better term, epic. The graphics were among some of the best I've ever seen and the environment was presented in a very impressive and grandiose manner. It wasn't until much later in the game (the Cronos fight) that I got that same feeling, however.
The combat was decent. I played on the normal difficulty and never really felt very challenged. I liked having different weapon options, but while there were 4 different weapons, I felt like there were really only 2. The default weapon and the gauntlets were pretty much all I used. I leveled up Hades' weapon (mainly to get the Souled Out trophy), but it seemed very similar to the default weapon, but not as useful. By the time I got the last weapon, I didn't feel like pumping orbs into it to level it up and it just seemed too similar to the default weapon to justify using it.
One thing I've heard on people comment on when talking about this game is how unlikeable Kratos is. I've heard him referred to numerous times as a dick with no redeeming qualities. I never played the first two, so I'm not sure if his character has just slowly progressed from being a "badass" to being a "dick with no redeeming qualities," but I like it. My friend and I have had discussions in the past about how it seems that few people ever do anything unique with the main character. Most of my opinion stems from playing RPG's where you are pretty much always some kid who is supposed to be likeable and you are tasked with saving the world because you are chosen or because it is your destiny. That shit gets old. The recent answer to offering variety has been to give players the choice between being good/evil, famous/infamous, or paragon/renegade. I always break bad when given the choice. I don't necessarily like Kratos because of how over the top he is sometimes, but I appreciate the story that is told through him. This dude got played and he wants revenge. the world and the implications of his quest for revenge. He knows what he wants and will do anything to get it. This is a selfish, violent man who has been consumed with hatred and rage. I don't think I've ever played a game with a main character like Kratos and I appreciate a game that doesn't give you the option of being some goody goody who is out to save the world. Not all stories involve rainbows, butterflies and good intentions and not all stories have happy endings.
Speaking of endings, I enjoyed the events leading up to the ending, but because I had become such a fan of the picture of Kratos that they were painting, I almost felt a little cheated by, what appeared to me, to be an attempted act of redemption. Maybe I'm off in my interpretation, though.
Overall, I thought it was a very fun game. The wife watched me play a good bit of the game and was a little turned off by some of the over the top violence, but overall, enjoyed watching me play and helping me out with the puzzle sections. Good thing she wasn't around when I was beating the brakes off of Aphrodite. I'm sure that would have put a bad taste in her mouth.
So what do you guys think? Did it live up to your expectations or was it a big letdown?
I think the cut-scenes are incredible and wish they would have not relied so heavily on quick-time events. The frequent use of QTE feels gimmicky (to me) in an action game and with the quality of the visuals today they should have died with the PS2.
