what will cost you less in the long run? buying games that you are interested in once they hit say $40 or throwing $22 out the window for gamefly even if there isn't anything you want that month? just curious it's summertime and i only work 20 hours a week or so and i want to save some money, but i'm also bored and need new games to keep me busy. should i sign up for gamefly until next semester starts?

Personally, I'd rather get my games cheap. Knowing I can always go back and play them (or trade them in) is better than thinking "Man, I want to play this game again. Oh wait, I have to wait 2-4 days to get it in the mail...". Ya know?

yeah i see your point but i don't go back to games once i finish with them. and the games i play the most are sports games and racing games which i usually buy. im talking about gamefly for games that i wouldn't play otherwise

I use gamefly and love it. I've got the 2 games at a time plan and can usually always get the new games shipped out to me on Tuesday and have them by Friday. It's great for the single player games your only going to play through once or so and don't want to buy. I'm looking at you Alan Wake, should be coming Tuesday. Also good for some of the MP sports games you only play when they are fresh, like Tiger Woods (Except with the new EA online code thing it won't work so well this year I don't think.)

I just started using Gamefly and I'm trying to figure this out for myself. I like GameFly because for $15 i can rent 2-3 games each month (w/ 1 game out) to see if I like them or not. I think the breaking point comes when you find a game you actually like. Then you have to figure out how long it will take you to complete it, whether you'd ever want to play it again, and how much it's worth to you. If you'd only pay $20 for it, then it's not worth keeping for more than a month.
Personally, I think it helps me buy fewer crappy games. Sometimes I'm really interested in a game that there is no demo for (like some of those obscure PS2 RPGS) and it can save me money by renting them to see if they are any good in the first place. Another bonus with Gamefly is that you get a small discount on the "keep it" price of a game. You also get $5 credit each month that you can use to "keep" games. I think it's worthwhile if you are a finicky gamer. |

Wait, F4t4lFury, they are giving the $5 credits monthly now, not quarterly (every 3 months)?

What I do with games I really want to play, but I don't have enough time to play it in the 5 day rental. Games like Bad Company 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction. I buy them brand new the day they come out. Then I put them up on eBay, and I get back at least $40. So it turns out being a $20 rental for anywhere between two weeks and a month.
But then there are games, like every game in my collection, which I enjoyed so much that I don't want to sell them. |

The $5 keep it credit is still every 3 months, not sure where he came up with it being every month.

I use Blockbuster instead of Gamefly. Having a ten minute drive to swap out games is far better than having to wait 3-5 days for a new game in the mail. I generally get a Blockbuster monthly pass ($22, 1-out at a time, Games and Movies) a few times a year and I'm able to try 20-30 games and movies in one month.
I constantly buy cheap games as well ($5-$20 per game, not $40), so the two are not mutually exclusive. A third option for more expensive games is to use a lot of Gamestop deals so you can both buy them cheap and sell them for around how much you bought them for. For example I bought Splinter Cell Conviction for around $35 with Gamestop's 25% off used games and an edge card and sold it back to Gamestop a couple of weeks later for around $35 with their 30% extra and an edge card. This works even better with their Buy 2 Get 1 Free sales. Last year I bought Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 at a Buy 2 Get 1 Free and ended up selling back CoD and L4D for almost the price of all 3 (Uncharted 2 is too excellent to sell). |

based on your last blog entry (buying games you don't play, MLB10 & GOW3), I'd say you should stick with renting to cut down on the impulse buying.
Either that or wait until games drop to $30 or less. Gamefly has some really good sales... seriously, what's the rush??? unless it's like a hot multiplayer title (ie Modern Warfare 2) all you friends are playing since launch. Early adopters get punished - Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits always get the DLC packed in for free. If you're like most CAGs that post here, you probably have huge stacks of never been touched sealed games. |

Well today I ordered Bayonetta from GameFly since I'm still on my one month account, we'll see how I like it. If I beat there's no real reason to buy it so I see your point for some games
