ASIJ #17 Kyoto

こんにちは

So this time I was interrupted by E3 and stuff. Good news though, we got a really nice condo we were bidding on.

So we headed to Kyoto to meet with some of my classmates. We managed to meet up in the labyrinth of a very crowded and large vertically tiered station. After that we had to find a hostel. Doing things on the fly up to this point, finding a hostel with openings on a Saturday in Kyoto on the fly wasn’t so easy. After lugging luggage to the first hostel, we got rejected but they were kind enough to book us at another hostel in the opposite direction we traveled. This isn’t the first time or last time we were helped by the extremely nice hostel workers. So we lugged our stuff through the heat all the way to the other side of the station. We ended up staying in this 16 bed room on this random second floor closet ish area on top of a gym. We threw our stuff down and left out to make the best of our day in Kyoto.

First we saw some massive temple ish things. Then we wandered off in search of the food market. The Nishi food market is much like other markets as a narrow corridor lined with street vendors and hole in the wall shops. We stopped and ate at a hole in the wall restaurant. Afterwards we got some soy doughnuts and soy based green tea ice cream on the cheap. Probably the best ice cream I had while I was in Japan.

At this point the day was already close to closing time(4 pm) so we had to walk and eat(screw not doing that like practically EVERY Japanese person). We checked out this one exquisite home place for some dude(I can’t rememeber the particulars as you can tell and I’m not looking them up) that had floors purposely made squeaky so he would know if ninjas were coming for him. It also had a crazy nice zen garden.

After this we saw some shops and found a random hole in the wall bar to rest our feet and get some beerishment. After that we found a random place to eat in and I ordered some mystery drink. Of course when asking the guy whats in the drink, he just repeats the title of it. We got sit up in this attic area of the place that was very…quaint. After this, well, I should probably omit the part where one guy in our group got us on the bus in the wrong direction that took us to the outskirts of Kyoto. And then we wandered for an hour to a subway station to find it’s closed at 12am. Eventually we had to take taxis to these big orange gates, the only thing that stays open at that hour.

These gate things supposedly have a new one every year for new businesses. They progressively get smaller as you go on and it goes on and on…on them you can see the name of the businesses.

After this we walked to the hostel having already exhausted ridiculous amounts of money that day(thanks for having to use the taxi friend..). Of course it rains, of course we get pigeonholed by sidewalks that abruptly stop. 2 or 3 am and we make it back and pass out exhausted and not in the best of moods. It’s no surprise the next day we decide to start anew by heading to Osaka.

and it’s raining the next morning too of course when we’re ready to leave and of course my friend doesn’t have an umbrella. Oh Japanese weather, how you suck.

See ya on the next update

Sounds like some more great times! Although everything didn't go perfectly, there were a lot of memories and it still sounds like things went okay.

Reading about your adventures really makes me want to go out and do something like this, just to see another part of the world and have some new experiences. It looks like a great time and I'm really glad you are sharing everything!

Plan for the future and do it! It's totally worth it.

It has rained the past 5 days straight. The weather report claims it will rain only two more days before we get a reprieve.
Yeah, I love Japanese weather too! (T_T)
It's especially good since I have to walk to the P.O. to send packages.
