Steak Kuni: One of my favorite Japanese meals

While I was attending E3, Tai had a fever every day I was gone. Since my wife had to deal with a sick baby (and a severe lack of sleep), upon my return, I thought it might be nice a gesture to take the Mrs. out for a nice steak dinner. It's a very expensive meal ($100+/person for the best steak + drinks), but for special occasions it's definitely worth it.

Of course this is similar to Homer Simpson buying his wife a bowling bowl with "Homer" imprinted on it, but Shima really likes Steak Kuni, so at least she gets something out of it too.

You see, like many Japanese people, my wife is a foodie. She loves to go out for high-end meals and I really can't complain. Some women blow tons of dough on shoes and handbags, but not Shima. Considering that I can't really benefit from women's shoes, I'm happy to be married to a gourmet.

There are several Steak Kuni restaurants around Tokyo, but we go to the one closest to us, which happens to be located right across the street to the sumo arena.

I'm always sure to order sake and beer, perhaps the best alcohol combo around.

When you order your steak, you order it by the gram. The menu lists the prices by the gram and the best cut (Yonezawa beef) is 40-50 yen per gram, depending on what specials they have at the time. I usually order 250 grams for myself. After you order, the meat guy comes to your table and cuts and weighs your meat.

Besides the awesome steak, they also have some nice appetizers and side dishes. We always order the Clam Surprise, which is served on a sizzling platter.

We also order the set which includes a salad, meat soup, and garlic rice. I didn't include pictures of the salad, because really...who cares about salad.

Enough screwing around. It's all about the steak, and here it is...an incredible expensive steak that is worth every penny.

Of course Tai doesn't sit still during the meal, so Shima winds up having to cut my steak for me while I hold Tai so he doesn't freak out. After a liter of beer and 2 glasses of sake, it is no longer a hassle and actually becomes a fun game. Can I enjoy my steak and keep a baby from losing his shit?

I hope you didn't give any of that alcohol to Tai, Cheapy. It looks like he wanted some pretty bad in that one photo.
In a drunken stupor, make sure not to bite Tai's fingers thinking it's a piece of steak. Sizzling platters FTW!

"as a vegetarian I'm offended that the salad didn't get equal billing..." is what I would say if I was a vegetarian.

but I'm not...

Garlic rice sounds good, that steak looked medium rare.

Dude, I'm vegan and even I say F Salad. Honestly, it's just an excuse to consume tasty salad dressing, anyway.

Cheapy looks like a fish in the last photo with his eyes bugging out and Tai holding his mouth open.

Medium rare - the only way to eat a steak.

Holy shit everything looks great there though, well worth the price by the looks of it.

You made me so hungry right now.
Might go downstairs and grill up a nice skirt steak for a sandwich.
I usually take Medium though.
But I'd eat Medium Rare.
I guess it depends on what kind of steak it is.
