There is a lot to like about Monday Night Combat, and as Xbox Live Arcade Games go, it features a fun and unique multiplayer experience. The game at its core is a mix of class-based shooter mechanics and tower defense-style strategy. There are 6 distinct character classes to choose from: the Assault (a well-rounded soldier type), the Tank (the close-range, heavy defensive guy), the Support (a medic and up-grader of turrets), the Assassin (stealthy master of invisibility but low on health and protection), the Gunner (my personal favorite: high in health and ammo), and the Sniper (he’s a sniper). All Six classes each have four unique skills that can be upgraded with money earned during the round.

The game has two basic gameplay styles. Blitz is a tower defense-style mode where you need to protect your Moneyball from waves of enemies. There are varying levels of enemy difficulty and numbers of waves for this game type, and it can be played with up to 3 other players online. This mode is fun and offered a good off-line diversion, but for me, the real game mode to check out is Crossfire.

Crossfire is a 6-on-6 multiplayer mode where each team tries to take out the other’s Moneyball. You will need to build and upgrade turrets, build robots, and upgrade your skills before the other team takes you out. Different classes can build different robot types; all are needed to weaken the defenses of the opposition. Likewise, you will need to build defensive turrets to protect your own side. Thus, communication between teammates is the key. Being able to plan who uses which class of turrets, what to build where, and which direction to move in will ensure success if you are playing against a group of strangers.

In the short-term, the game is a ton of fun. My main issue is the long-term draw for the game. There is a persistent money earning portion to the game, but there is very little to buy. There are Protags, which are purely cosmetic and a custom class that isn’t all that custom. In this character type, the basic class types and in-game upgrades are the same, but you can select up to 3 sponsors, each giving a stat boost. I would have liked to see the custom class be more of a mix/match of the character classes or maybe incorporate some new gear to unlock as you play. As the game is, you can see everything each class can do by playing one game as that class.

I really wanted to love this game but sadly I can’t get past the “friends” stage. It’s good looking and we get along just fine. But I just wish the style had bit more substance. The humor feels forced due in part to the cartoonish graphical style, but I think the game would be better suited without it. Also, each level feels the same; in one multiplayer round I asked another player what made the map we playing different then the last one. His response was, “the background is blue.” Monday Night Combat at heart is a good time with friends, and a nice diversion from the hardcore seriousness of your Halos or Call of Dutys. It probably won’t become anyone’s first choice for an online experience, but for the short term it will help get you through the August drought and get you prepped for this fall’s more robust online experiences.

Monday Night Combat was provided by Uber Entertainment and Microsoft. The game was played for five hours. I accumulated 4 out of 12 Achievements for 50 GamerScore. I also unlocked two Avatar Awards. Monday Night Combat is available exclusively on the Xbox 360.

One of my favorite Xbox 360 games (not just arcade)! This game is worth $30+.. especially compared to some of the standalone crap they've released on the 360.

Good job Wombat. I'm proud of you.

I'd get it if it was a bit less expensive mainly because I can only do the single player prob.

your review sucks big balls. i want boatcrash
Easily worth the $15. This is the most unique game to appear in the shooter genre for about 10 years, IMO. It's not a casual shooter, btw. There's a lot of nuance to the combat that will separate the noobs from the pros. It's far from a perfect game but for $15, it's perfect for its price tag.

The past 10 years have been very repetitive when it comes to shooters, but War for Cybertron and this have rejuvenated the genre for me.
Also, I'm glad there's not much persistent player growth opportunities. That tends to wreck game balance in multiplayer games.

I've been playing a bunch of MNC with friends since it came out. Prior to this, I'd been playing mostly BC2 online. You're right about the arenas all being very similar (although Steel Peel is fairly different because it has a dome - which makes long range turrets useless - and has that large circular open area of death), but the custom classes actually do make a difference because you can pick sponsors that really fit your playstyle. I do agree that most of the stuff you can unlock is pretty pointless, though. Protags are silly but useless. I'd like at least some more visual customization options or something. Oh well...game is still a LOT of fun in crossfire, and I'd definitely say that of all the Summer of Arcade games, this is the one where I feel I've gotten my $15 worth and then some.
The review is fair, though I do think it's worth the full $15. The game is quite fun. I love to hop in a game and choose support just to run around and upgrade turrets. Even if we're losing it's still really great.

I for one really like the cartoony feel of the art style. As I get into my mid-20's I can no longer suffer the "hardcore" shooters like Halo/GoW/etc. However I love games like TF2 and MNC. They feel more like games to me.

The fact that the unlocks don't seem all that powerful or game changing is actually a good thing. Games like this need to feel accessible to new players. We don't want the people who've been playing for 6 months to trounce every new player because they've unlocked all the powerful weapons and armor. Player skill should be the only thing separating them. Though I suppose they could have had something like unlockable uniforms or something else that's purely aesthetic to slake certain people's thirst for persistent unlocks (much like TF2 hats).

Overall, I'd say don't be afraid to shell out 15 clams for this game. At the very least give the demo a whirl, you can play the full game for half an hour. Be sure to try the Crossfire mode, as this is pretty much the main game. I also recommend watching the video here: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/07/vi...about-support/ as it will show you how the controls work and the upgrade system, so you can spend most of your 30 minutes playing the game and not trying to figure out how to play.

Man, how cheap can you be... Limbo I agreed with, but this game is easily worth 15 dollars.

That said, if you play it, and use a mic, send me a friend request - MethodMan008...

I've played it for about 2-3 hours total and I have ran across ONE other person using a mic.
Yeah, this game is awesome. Please add me also if you play this game, "Dr Never' is my gamertag.

My only complaint is, host migration fails almost every time and you get no money when this happens. Somehow though, I don't care. I just join another match until it's smooth sailing.

Hint to new players: pick a class someone isn't already playing on your team. You really need to have a balanced team to have a chance at winning in this game.

Also, killing bots is a great way to get cash. Killing players is always fun, but it's better to get cash and boost your powers so you'll be able to defeat other "pros" (that's what players are called) easier. Hope to see some fellow CAGers online.
i remember that cag and goozex members would go heads up in fat princess-i was thinking it might be fun if something like that happened again with this game--anyway i just picked up this game bout half hour ago, so im gonna go play a bit n get the hang of it--til i get good enough to go on line n kick ass.

Gotta disagree with you pal, this game is well worth twice the price. This is one of the best Arcade titles. At least, try the demo, you'll see what I mean.

I had more fun with MNC than most retail shooters. $15 is a steal for this game.
