You know it had been a viral on the web for the past few weeks about how you should boycott Target. The core issue of the boycott is that Target essentially donated $100,000.00 to a group called MN Forward to help support Minnesota based politicians who support lower taxes. It turns out that MN Forward used that money to run political ads for Republican Tom Emmer who is anti-gay marriage and is currently running for Minnesota Governor. The reason MN forward used Target funds is not because Target is anti-gay, but because Tom Emmer supports lower corporate taxes for the state. Target also gave MN Forward $50,000.00 donation to help build its Brand and Reputation.

Target has been recognized in the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Trans-Gender) community in the past. They have sponsored Gay Rights parades, they offer gay team members domestic partners insurance benefits, and they work hard to overall add any LGBT issue to better affirm their overall diversity outlook within the company. Target is one of the most Gay friendly companies I know.

So now I am watching youtube videos, there is one with a mom shopping and cutting up her Target Visa, another where there is a group of people that start to dance in Target, and another with a guy stating at the begining "I do not know all the facts but..." and he goes onto say boycott Target. There is also one where a guy is shopping at Best Buy and gets to the cashier and tells the cashier that he is not going to pay for the item until...well I will just post the videos here and you can make the determination:

This is my favorite since the guy boycotting does not even come close to getting the Best Buy CEO's Brian Dunn name right. Instead he reffers to him as "Steifenhaul" maybe he got him confused with Gregg Steinhafel the Target CEO?

In this video this mom/grandma returns all of her stuff and is one of the more popular videos online. Once again, she says that Target dircetly contributed to Tom Emmer. She can boycott it is her right, but maybe she should get all the facts. Her position is nobel, but telling a Manager will not do anything about Target donations.

This commercial MSNBC decided not to air as a commercial since it is an attack on one company. Though channels in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area are airing it.

Finally, this video has a bunch of people singing and doing a choreographed dance inside a Target. This one bothers me most, not because they are protesting, but because they are essentially trespassing onto Target's property and doing it in their store. I am not a legal mastermind, but this could have deterred shoppers from spending money at Target (witch is the point) but they did do this on Target's property during business hours and I could see Target seeking restitution if they wanted to have even more bad PR:

In retrospect these "Protesters" are telling Target that they do not have the same rights that citizens have. Even thought the Supreme Court tells us so. Target is a company that pays taxes and they also have rights. If you do not like their practices than boycott them, at least try to understand what it is you are boycotting. Target is Pro-Gay Rights and this whole issue is just being spinned out of control.

If you want to boycott Apple Inc, because you hate apples that is fine, but to boycott because someone tells you to makes you cattle. If someone says do something, you should analyze the situation to see where you stand completly.

MN Forward has three main goals witch are: Tax reform, Spending reform, and eduction reform. They also support candidates that have similar goals and objectives. Republican, Democrat, or Independent. To be fair, I do not think that you will find a Republican that is open to Gay Marriage, that is not the conservative way.....

Guilt by association. If you donate to a party, individual, or entity then you are supporting all of their positions -- not just the one or few that you actually care about.

I'm actually glad that Target got "caught" for this and there's a visible consumer backlash. I hope it gives corporations in the future pause before wadding into the political arena, because you can damn be sure people on both sides of the political spectrum will be more than happy to jump on such actions in the future.

Besides, corporations have lobbyists and the Chambers of Commerce. How much more influence do they want to have over the American electorate? It's already WAY too much, IMO.

If you want a good laugh go to Target's facebook page and look at the wall. It's pretty much the same 5 people arguing "Boycott Target" and "I <3 Target" back and forth.

What is Tom Emmer smoking? He wants to add an amendment to MN Constitution to allow MN to opt out of federal laws. Then he wants to use that to be able to lower the minimum wage (which is at the federal level of $7.25). Does he really think that MN residents will be okay with this?

Hassling the staff and putting it on Youtube is stupid. But everything ecofreak said is spot on. If you support candidates on single issues and ignore the rest, there's going to be trouble.

It's Target's money. They can do whatever they want with it. Who are you to say who they donate it to? People should only give money to things you agree with?

Lol people act like their opinions are going to change the world. It is so funny.

Buycotting Target now . . .

@eldergamer - by the same thought, to each person that doesn't support that cause, it's THEIR money to not spend at Target.

@AlexLeSage - that's like half the girls I know. It's not a big deal.
Target happens to be a French company and with that comes their French values. Target is backwards with their hiring practices and just a terrible company that tries to hide behind charity efforts. I'm surprised nobody else realized this by now.

@Mad39er Target is a U.S. company based out of Minneapolis, MN. There is also another retailer called Target that does the same exact thing that is based in Australia. They are two seperate companies. I also see other companies brag about their charitable contributions. I am not a fan of Target or other companies bragging that they are awesome at charities and events for communities.

I never really understood this whole deal. Thank you for clarifying. I live in Minnesota so I often heard about this and I actually have various friends who are boycotting Target right now (I got lots of grief for shopping there).

A corporation's money is not all their own if they are a publicly traded company. Many people are enrolled in mutual funds, where the mix of various company's stocks are part of the package. Given the size and stability of Target, I highly sure that the vast majority of "low-risk" mutual funds have even 0.01% allocation in Target (much like Walmart is probably included).

So you can be sure that there are people in the LGBT community who have mutual funds w/ Target in the mix and do not support this kind of donation. And as a shareholder, they are absolutely within their right to express their disapproval. Sure, some of these tactics may seem "extreme" but it definitely gets the message across.

Donating to reputable charities are almost universally looked highly upon because they're "helping" a certain group -- children, the environment, 3rd world countries. So besides the PR boost, it's inherently altruistic.

Donations to political entities are done solely to advance the company's own interest, thus inherently selfish (even if one does argue that getting a positive outcome helps their shareholders).

You'd think these people would already be protesting target, over things that matter more than them giving a $100,000 contribution to some political group. You know, like how target treats their workers like shit, supports the outsourcing of jobs to third world countries. But of course this quasi-manufactured ("Hey look Teevee commercials!") outrage is the only thing anyone seems to care about. How about boycotting Moveon.org because on of its largest contributors is George Soros, a guy who made billions off screwing over people?
Ecofreak's Avatar
@Fullmetalfan720

People did protest (loudly) at Walmart when they had really bad work conditions in the 90's, I believe. Got a whole lot of negative PR and eventually turned things around -- I'm sure Target and other corporations got the message.

How do you outsource floor workers to 3rd world countries? Target workers don't manufacture goods, that'd be factory workers who are upset.

And your mentioning Moveon.Org is a straw-man argument. Moveon.org is a political action committee and George Soros is a private individual. Neither of which are stores that you can "boycott," neither are publicly held entities and thus have no bearing on this discussion.

This is beside the point, but Ecofreak, you sound a lot like an LSAT LR problem :P

I disagree with the Supreme Court about the rights of corporations. Target is not a person and should not be protected as one. Corporate money is much too pervasive in politics, and it is why we have such partisan gridlock in Congress. The general electorate is much less partisan than the politicians, but corporate funding keeps hardliners of both parties in office.

are we going to boycott target clearance thread? http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/...d.php?t=259838
maximboobles- LMFAO, i wonder if gay cags will.
Im a gay man and don't like the whole thing either.

Funny thing is the CEO donated himself to a right wing polictian and no one cared but when he did it using the Target name people the gays whipped up into a frenzy, a gay frenzy, the worst kind of frenzy.

Maybe he should of used his own name instead of Target and this wouldnt have happened. Does this guy have PR that told him this was a bad idea.

I'll just not support Target and go about my day.
Me in general, if a company doesn't do something that I don't like I won't shop there.
It's as simple as that. If I'm the only person that fine.
I'd do it either way. That's just me.
