I have plenty of paid vacation left to use.....what to do with it?

All right, this will be another quick blog I'll make on another decision I have. Last year I didn't really get the paid vacation because I was a new employee just starting. This year, I started off with two weeks paid vacation and got another week added on mid-way through the year. I have only missed three days of work (where I used vacation) because of us getting hit by a huge snowstorm (no way I was driving to work in 20+ inches of snow) and had to take two days off due to my sister's wedding. I used a few hours of vacation here and there because of Holiday's (I work 9 hour days most of the week to get every other Friday off, and since Holiday's only give us 8 hours, I just used 1 hour of vacation to make it up) and because of the PS Move event (where I took off of work early). Outside of that, I pretty much have just over 2 weeks of vacation left (two of the days I gotta save for the end of the year).
The big question is what to do with my vacation? There's no doubt I gotta use all my vacation by the end of the year or lose it. I have yet to use any sick days of work (that's something different), but that's because I rarely if ever get sick. Basically, I'm at work pretty much everyday and barely miss. I feel its my duty to be at work every single day, whether or not I really want to be at work (because I'm responsible). Also, I tend to not want to miss many days in a row because I fear getting behind on what's going on (one reason I never missed college classes). People would think I really need to use vacation because I work a little more than every other weekend (many times Saturday and Sunday, sometimes just Saturday). I even decided to go into work on Labor Day. I thought about taking an entire week to travel somewhere, but where? I was originally looking to travel to various theme parks around the country this summer, but now it doesn't seem likely because most are nearing closing time. I could go back home and visit my parents, but I last did that in July and honestly don't feel like going back (I rather stay where I'm at living on my own anyway). I'm considering making a trip to New York Anime Festival in October, but since I already went to Otakon (which is larger and close to me), not too sure about it. I honestly can't think of many places to travel, and can't say I want to leave the county anywhere (getting a passport would be annoying). The only issue I have with traveling is money. Traveling places isn't cheap, because you have plane ticket, rental car (if needed), hotel rooms are crazy expensive (although I barely know what they cost), and you gotta eat out every day. While traveling would give me more PSP time, in ways there's plenty to do where I live now. Otherwise, I can just take random days off to relax and do my normal activities such as play games, sleep in a little (my sleeping in is called sleeping until 6-7am). I could use more time to do stuff, but usually I just do my activities after work (even if little time) or whenever I'm off from work. But it seems like my off days is when I do major grocery shopping, looking around malls, getting my car oil changed, or other errands. But then again, that's the life of an adult, never fun and usually busy. I mostly saved vacation days because I worried about needing them in case of an emergency, like if a relative dies (not immediate family member which I do get paid for) or something happens to me (or there's something I really need to attend, such as the surprise PS event). Regardless I'll ask, anyone do anything fun/interesting during paid vacations from work (or time you took off from school to do something)? Just kind of getting items because all I can usually think of is play games, watch anime. |

There are cheap alternative to hotels. Hostels are generally about 80% the price of a hotel. Hostelworld.com also has ratings. Most of them have kitchens that you can cook in too. Not all hostels are like you see in the commmercials. Some of them even have private rooms and are still really cheap.
The best alternative is couchsurfing.com. Because its free. The only expensive part of your trip should be transportation. There are always cheaper alternative to food and sleep. |

You could take a trip to South Florida. You know, load up your car with a shitload of your video games and drive down here. Also, just cause I am such a good guy, I would gladly let you leave quite a few of those games here with me so you wouldnt be so crowded in your car for that drive back home^^

Traveling can be a little on the expensive side, but if there are things you want to see and places you want to go, then it is worth it. You can usually find decent hotels at a pretty good price, if you don't have to have the best hotels you will save a lot. If you want to save money on food, you have alternatives there as well. For example, you could buy some snacks to take a long with you so that you don't have to eat as many meals out. You could buy peanut butter and bread and make sandwiches, things like that are easy and inexpensive. Plus, a lot of places have dining discounts, i.e. Disney and Universal both have their own versions of a dining plan where you can get your meals at a much lower rate.
I definitely think you should take an actual vacation and go to some of the theme parks you have been wanting to go to. You seem to enjoy it when you go and you have the time, so it really works out for you. If you don't want to spend the money, what I would do is take a vacation and stay in your town. Since you haven't been living in your area a long time I'm sure there are a lot of things left for you to discover. You could go to museums, find new places to shop, etc. Since you are staying near home you could even make yourself one or two meals a day and try some new restaurants for a change. That way you wouldn't be cooking every meal, but could save some money if you want. Personally, when I do a vacation I like to eat out just because it is easier. Finally, use the time off to get some extra game time in, catch up on some things you have been wanting to do, etc. and just relax. When your busy and work hard it is always nice to just stay home and not have anything to do. Personally, what I would do is try to take your "staycation" either around the holidays are during a time when some games are coming out that you are really interested in. If you enjoy Christmas time, I would take some time around Christmas, buy some extra games and just spend the week getting as much time in with them as you can. Or, if a game is coming out you really want, i.e. Playstation Move, then I would take off around there and use the time to really get to enjoy the game. Anyway, those are just a few ideas... Spyder has a pretty good offer, I don't see anyone being able to pass that one up Enjoy whatever you decide to do! |

You don't get paid for unused vacation time MK? Because I would have said to wait for the check that comes from the vacation you didn't use.

I love how your positive thing about a vacation is more PSP time :P
I think you NEED that vacation. I'd recommend you get a passport (it's really not a big hassle, just allow plenty of time) and go international. I'd say Europe, preferably Spain or France. Life operates at a different pace there. The work week in France is only 36 or 38 hours (I forget if they got it raised to 38 or not - people rioted when they tried lol). In Spain shops close for a siesta after lunchtime and maybe open again later for an hour I just think it would be good for you to experience a slower, relaxed, pace of life. Especially after reading about your work habits. Jeez dude, life is too short, take time for yourself! |

TMK: Since you fear possibly falling behind at work, what I would do is save up vacation until close to the end of the year, and then just shortening the work week by a day or two for the final two months of the year.
Or, if you are willing to pay the travel expenses, take a real vacation as others have said. Whatever you do, just make sure you *enjoy* your vacation days and put them to good use =]. |

@Spyder187, Florida has been the state I've considered the most visiting.
@1NintendoFan, there's still a lot I want to do in DC. I might just find a good day and visit museums and stuff. @buttmunky, its use it or lose it for vacation. @randomthinker My work habits are worse than you probably thought. @darkcecil32, Honestly, there are people to cover stuff for me, but there are certain things I just feel the need to be there for at times. Plus, I'm the type who always wants to know what's going on. Missing too many days I may lose track. |

Take off the 2 weeks, then the night before the first day of vacation starts drop about 32 hits of acid. That will keep you entertained for 336 hours.

well if it is a use it or lose it thing, I suggest you take off during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. Just take the time and recharge your batteries. Leave for home on like Monday or Tuesday to save on the plane tickets and do the same for Christmas and if that is not your cup of tea right now, just take extended three day weekends when a game you want comes out
