Life has been good. Except one thing...

I'll keep this brief, since I have to go to work in a bit.

I have a warrant.

Basically, I was supposed to do 40 hours of community service since I had missed a lot of days in school (they got me for this shit, after I got my high school diploma...) but I didn't, so I owe $500. I then agreed to go to a meeting somewhere downtown (dont have the details atm) in order to arrange a payment plan of sorts, but I ended up not being able to make it so I have a warrant now.

I'm still trying to get the money, but its probably going to take quite a while so... I'm lost.

Am I going to get arrested at this point when I finally decide to turn myself in?

Does the fine increase the longer that I wait? This is for a misdemeanor by the way.

I've never had a warrant before so I don't know how this all works. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Don't know much about the justice system, but I would guess you have a couple options, and you can call the court to verify.

1. Turn yourself in, allow them to arrest you, and explain to the judge that you're broke. You might get off with time served.

If you don't want to go to jail, or stay in jail, ask someone to get a bail bond so you can get out within a couple hours. This might not be necessary tho since it's just a misdemeanor.

2. Ask if you can reschedule the meeting re: the payment plan. As long as you're trying I doubt they'll actually arrest you.

The main thing is keep communicating with them. The cops aren't scouring the streets for you, but if you get pulled over or something you'll get arrested.

Good luck, I'm sure it will work out, you'll just have to face some unpleasantness.

This is excellent advice.

There is only one reasonable piece of advice: grow up and deal with your problem as soon as possible instead of putting it off any longer. Waiting until you have built up the cash, or until you feel ready, will only make things worse and put you in a deeper hole. Make fixing this problem your #1 priority and then get on with your life!

This is where you really screwed up. You couldn't get to a phone? You agreed to go, then didn't. You could have picked up a phone and called them and explained you couldn't make it and needed to reschedule instead of just standing them up. You have no valid excuse for not calling, just didn't feel like it.

Make contact with them and set up your payment plan, even like $20 a month or something, surely you can come up with that much.

My question though goes back to the beginning of your story, how can you get community service for missing school that then expanded into a $500 fine and now a warrant. I didn't realize you can get court issued community service for missing some school.

I don't think think you could get community service for missing school. I just feel like he left something left to make the story complete.

It all seems fishy to me. If there was a major problem with him missing school they wouldn't have let him graduate. This after graduation community service thing doesn't make sense.

speaking as someone with no practical definite knowledge in this particular matter. I doubt the fine will increase. I too suggest communication. At the very lease get to a pay phone and call them to ask about a payment plan or something.

If they start making demands or something outrageous like that you can just hang up and you're back at square one.

that must have been a lot of school missed if they assigned you legally to do comm service.
call the district attorney talk to him on the phone then set up a time to meet with him.

In the grand scheme of things you are a small fry, a nuisance that isn't worth the trouble...unless:

A) you get pulled over for a moving violation (speeding, tail light out, reckless driving, drunk driving, etc.)
B) Any alleged or potential altercation (bar fight, public nuisance, getting into a 10 minute public argument when you only intended to have a 5 minute one, etc.), especially in and/or near the presence of a peace officer.
C) Pissing your girlfriend/wife/partner off enough that he/she/them calls the cops...especially in California (thanks, O.J.!).
D) This ISN'T your first offense, because then you will be 'ed!

Just do as other have already suggested. Come Monday morning, take the initiative and call the non-emergency number of your local police. Be straight-forward, honest, and contrite. Let them know you want to do right by them ASAP. With a bit of luck, they will appreciate your sincerity and possibly throw you a bone.

And if you've had a clean record in the past, there is no need to worry yourself to death over this.

I did 40 days in the county jail.. it was like an adult day care. Very easy and stress free.. almost like a vacation. I went in at the beginning of summer break and got out 2 days before spring semester.

But I agree with the posts above. Make contact, figure out how to make it right, don't let it just sit and catch up with you someday.
