Do you really have to be drinking while bowling?

In my high school years, I use to bowl all the time. I bowled in some Junior League every Saturday, with an average of around 120 my first season, 140+ my second season. I wasn't exactly bowling for years, but I was pretty consistent staying within my average (and continuing going up every time I played). I got pretty big into bowling owning three balls (one plastic for spares, one urethane as my strike ball), owning a bowling glove, pretty cool bowling shoes (which look like regular shoes), along with a bunch of other bowling accessories. Ever since my last bowling games in May 2001, I have not bowled since. I have wanted to bowl, but never got the chance due to leaving my ball home while away at college, and just didn't have many friends nearby who went bowling (it was also expensive and bowling alleys were very smokey).

I've been wanting to bowl with co-workers for quite a while, but times I didn't get the opportunity due to something going on (such as family in town). So today I was offered to go bowling with various people at work one evening. A co-worker and I got mixed up because I thought it was a bowling alley, he thought it was a bar. After talking to the co-worker who invited me, he said its both a bar and bowling alley. While that may be fine and all, I was told that I would want to be drinking while bowling. So far I'm like WTF? I have not had any liquor or alcoholic drink since December 10th, 2009 where I had some captain and Coke mixed together. I felt a bit tipsy, but I really don't want to do that again (I might admit to a girl that I like her, lol). This year I've had a total of 6 beer bottles, but I usually prefer not to drink much beer (it does taste a bit crappy, but having one drink once a month isn't bad).

The situation is that I want to bowl, but not really a big fan of drinking. I could careless if people drink around me, just that I want to aim as accurately as possible. Also, since I have work the next day, I rather not have any alcohol in me. But many people say how much fun it is to drink and bowl at the same time. Personally I don't understand why people want to do both at the same time, so I ask others who have done it whether they find it fun. I will most likely go out with co-workers bowling, but probably won't drink. I probably won't let anyone pressure me into it (like the time I had the Captain + Coke where people wouldn't let me leave without a drink).

Regardless, it would be interesting to see how I do bowling. Only bowling I've played since 2001 is lots of High Velocity Bowling and Wii Bowling (on Wii Sports & Wii Sports Resort). I continued to bowl what my average was in those games, so I'll probably bowl around the same.

Anyone feel that bowling is still fun not drinking any alcohol?

You are bowling with co-workers, not in a tournament. Drink don't drink doesn't matter as long as you have fun.

A lot of them are probably going just to drink but by saying they're bowling it doesn't sound quite as degenerate. Either way do what you want and have fun. That's all that matters. (and when they are real drunk get them to wager on games and go home with some extra bread)

I usually grab some food at a bowling alley while my friends drink. You should never have to/feel compelled to drink unless you want to.

I love bowling even though I'm pretty awful at it (note: I've never bowled and been drinking). I tend to average around 110-120 pins, but usually play only a handful of times a year. Luckily, none of my friends usually ever bowl over 150, so I don't feel too bad. And I have hit a turkey in the tenth frame on a couple of occasions.

On league night my team has around 4 pitchers of beer as we are bowling. If anyone on the team has a practice session we usually don't drink. I have fun bowling no matter what, just on league night they offer discounts on beer that makes it cheaper then drinking in a bar.

@Midnite, the alley I'm going to is near Inner Harbor if I'm correct.
Booze has it's uses in bowling, pool and other things. I know several people who play their preferred game and get better and better the drunker they are. Being able to relax and not over think things is part of having a good time, booze will loosen up some of that anxiety and tension most of the time. Good music is the other part that is key though.

I have never been bowling while drinking but drinking doesn't affect my pool. It probably depends on the person but like others have said as long as you're having fun it doesn't matter how good you look. Unless of course you guys have a bet going on.

You don't have to drink when you go out bowling.

"My drinking team has a bowling problem"

That's what we say in my bowling league. But the reality is some people drink some people dont. Some, like me, drink some nights and dont drink on others. I carry a ~170 average and have had some bad nights sober and great nights drunk (and vice versa). Bowling is primarily rhythm and muscle memory anyway so as long as your balance isnt compromised (which leads to its own hilarity) you can usually bowl your normal game drunk or sober.

Oh and yeah we play for money even when drinking, but like I said, the beer doesnt negatively impact the games. In fact, there are some nights where I say I need a beer (or three) to get my game right. You have to have a certain bowling/beer equilibrium.

I first discovered "Drunk Bowling" in college. But then, we would get near falling down drunk and hurl balls. It was not uncommon for a 'winning' score to be in the forties (fitting as 8-ball was the beverage of choice...well that or vodka).

But the point is, drink or dont drink. It's never a requirement.

Why are you so against having fun?

When you go out with people to a bowling alley that serves alcohol, the first priority should NOT BE "play as well as possible". That's just missing the entire point, bro.

dont drink, just get stoned. way fun yo
easiest way to not feel pressured is to offer to be the dd that night. most people will love this idea because then they can drink more and still have fun and it makes you look like the guy wanting everyone to have fun and making sure they stay safe

I'm sure they were just saying that because that's the "norm", for people to drink while they bowl. I don't think they're going to get mad or anything if you choose not to, or try to shove it down your throat. There's nothing wrong with you if you don't want to drink, I know I wouldn't.
Drinking dulls the pain of being in a bowling alley and dealing with all the riff raff.
