On Dead Island - the trailer everyone is talking about

So first off. Yeah this is a fantastic trailer. It tells an interesting story. It looks great. It has the unexpected. But if we have learned nothing else from Final Fantasy VIII it's that a great trailer does not a game make. This video also continues a trend i hate which is businesses that use facebook to host their website. I mean I get it you want a presence on Facebook but is it really that hard to create your own website? Some place I don't have to login and be bombarded with all my friendrequests and facebook message that I'm trying to ignore? Why link me to your facebook page when you have your own page?

For those not getting the irony here the deadisland.com page is nothing. I mean how hard is it to put up a splash page that says Coming Soon and then has links to facebook and twitter. It can be static and it would cost like $9 a year.

As for the game itself here's what we know
  1. first-person melee combat
  2. 4-player coop
  3. weapon customization
  4. set on an open world tropical island
  5. RPG elements for character development
  6. hordes of gruesome zombies

which isn't bad. PS3/360/PC which isn't unexpected. Sounds like L4D with melee instead of guns.. so maybe L4D2 minus guns? I mean it looks nice but we really need to calm down the hype over nothing. Getting hype over CoD or Halo CG trailers you can justify because you know what they've done in the past but this is a new franchise and we know nothing about. Let's just keep our responses measured.

TMI: I'm kinda tired lately. I'm this close to letting my computer pick a randomly selected number and using it to decide what I wear, clean or not, in the day. That's how little I care.

There's always someone that has to be "that guy", the one to try to be the big buzz kill about something...always one.

Final Fantasy VIII turned out to be my favorite FF... So what your telling me is, Dead Island will be one of the greatest games of all time?

Thank you for the heads up! I'll be sure to preorder.

FFVIII is one of my favorite games and my favorite FF game for sure.

I was going to chime in on FFVIII too, but I guess I got beat to it. Though to be fair the article you linked said it was great too. It's just that you can't believe everything you see in trailers, and especially trailers by Square.

the point wasn't that FFVIII was a bad game. But it looks nothing like the cutscenes they used to advertise it in gameplay. I'm not saying don't be excited for the game but that we should try to keep it reasonable. Naughty Bear looked great from it's trailers and that turned out terrible.

Yeah ordinarily I don't bother commenting on "CGI isn't gameplay" but this is such a fantastic trailer you just know the entire internet is going to go bananas over it and start pre-ordering yesterday. In spite of the pretty much next to nothing we know about the game.

If I can be cynical for a moment: I'm surprised GameStop doesn't fund gamecompanies to make more great CGI trailers and then rake in profits on more pre-orders that generate fiscal interest.
