![]() Those of you that follow me on twitter (@AlanRappa) probably have seen my tweets about doctor visits, x-rays & MRIs. Well for the past few weeks (months maybe) I have been dealing with pain & swelling in my left knee. Apparently I managed to tear the medial meniscus in my knee which is a fibro-cartilage semicircular band that spans the knee joint. What this means is my knee is a tad messed up. I can walk and do most things just fine, but every now and then my knee bugs out and locks up or just causes pain for no apparent reason. Any physical activities above the norm have been somewhat difficult to manage. After reviewing the MRI with my doctor he recommended arthroscopic surgery to cut off the torn part of the meniscus. In the hopes of being back to 100% for our Japan trip I've got the procedure scheduled for Tuesday of next week. Apparently the surgeryis not a big deal, and I'll be able to walk again after only a day or so. Then, it's a month of taking it easy + physical therapy before I can get back into any activities. While I'm not so much looking forward to the surgery, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to a few days stuck on the couch with a controller in my hand. I'm planning to spend my recovery with Bulletstorm as well as working my way through my backlog. While the surgery should only take 30 minutes I am a little nervous as I have never had surgery before, nor have I ever been under anesthesia. I've broken plenty of bones, been in the ER numerous times - but this is going to be an entirely new experience. Not to mention filling out paperwork where you have to sign your name to acknowledge the chance of death is a humbling situation. Unfortunately, since I will be knocked out, I won't be taking any pictures during the surgery. I may ask the doc to snap one or two with Sackboy & Red Knight if he doesn't mind :0 have a great weekend everyone. |

Sorry to hear you have to have surgery, never any fun. Hopefully you will be all healed up for the trip, so you have something to look forward to.
I have only had one surgery in my life (it seems like everything else doctors do to me they prefer to do while I'm wide awake with no pain medicines I definitely think that you should ask the doctor to take a picture with Sackboy and Red Knight, just to see what he says. Good luck with everything! |

the most hilarious thing about adult sugery is feeling yourself knocked out. I went under when I was a kid and they gassed me. I remember counting back from 10 but I don't remember how far I got or anything else until I work up half way thru.
Now when I went under last year it was different. I had an IV and I was fully awake they clicked something and I could feel myself just completely fall out at once. I thought it was hilarious. |

I had surgery on my wrist to remove a cyst and the only thing that sucked was they shot me up with a ton of lidocaine, rolled me all the way into the surgery room. Then I had to get off the bed, onto the table and start counting backwards, I saw stars in the overhead lamp and that was it. Lets just say the getting off the bed part is what sucked and the nausea that followed waking up. Also the fact that I woke up with no pain meds in me, so that sucked, I cried for the nurse. Other than the fact that it took an extraordinary amount of anesthesia to put me down and out, it was otherwise like taking a nap after binge drinking. They shoot you up with all sorts of goodies, lidocaine burns like a mofo though.

I tore my ACL and meniscus last year playing football, my first surgery as well. For Meniscus surgery, you'll be in and out. They'll cut the torn part away and you'll be back on your feet prolly within a day. No worries, relax and enjoy the meds.
